I completely agree, it would've turned out just like any other sappy, unrealistic, teen drama during this time since that seemed to be a very popular movie genre at the time. I think the raunchiness and comedy in this movie added the perfect touch otherwise it would've turned out so basic and boring, and it wouldn't have been as iconic. It would've been so similar to Clueless but since it had comedians in it, it turned out perfect.
