I completely agree, it would've turned out just like any other sappy, unrealistic, teen drama during this time since that seemed to be a very popular movie genre at the time. I think the raunchiness and comedy in this movie added the perfect touch otherwise it would've turned out so basic and boring, and it wouldn't have been as iconic.
