I was surprised by how much the expensive flute made me feel compared to the cheaper one. It's definitely obvious that your skill has more effect on the sound of the flute but the expensive one was noticeably more expressive. It really made me think because I started off with a ~£400 Trevor James flute and got my >£1000 pearl flute as an intermediate player. I love that flute and still have and play it all the time but, as more of a casual player these days, I do sometimes feel the pressure of having a higher quality instrument because there's just so much more you can do with it. It's like drawing in a sketchbook vs painting on a canvas the size of a house. Just found your channel btw and I think it's awesome!

It was very apparent in the Carmen Fantasy. So that's what $84,000 sounds like :) (196* student Artley w/B foot). When I was a student in the '70's, Gemeinhart was drool worthy among my sister and her flutist friends. Since I didn't start playing it until late 70's, my used Artley was enough. Been thinking of an Amazon Yamaha, but now I see the Gemeinhart is same price from Flute Center. Great video and thanks for the hard work! Best Regards/Wishes!

My first flute was a Trevor James, from All Flutes Plus in Warren Street, London, which was great for learning on, and cost about £150 back in the '80s. My flute teacher recommended that I get an upgrade and I paid about £600 for a Boosey and Hawkes. The difference was remarkable, once I'd trained myself on it. Apparently the difference in tone gave me two music grades more. I was going for grade 7 but a divorce got in the way. Got grade 5 with merit and theory grade 5 distinction and was well on my way. Hey ho, things and life happen. After all this rambling, the point is that the inexpensive learner flutes are good for just that, but to get the tone and power, you have to shell out more money. Perhaps not as much as, £70,000 though. This video makes this case pretty well, and thanks for filming it, Katie.

Beautiful playing Katie, love the sounds of both. The Gemeinhardt in the right hands is probably capable of doing most things. But as an amateur flautist, there is always that desire to want to get the next one up. The better one, and eventually one develops sense and stops when the collection has no place in the showcase cabinet. Love the channel. Love the playing, and the tone is superb. I'm 48 years old and I did go to music college - I did not finish but I kept playing and eventually became a rock flutist - yes, really! But this video makes me happy, because I started in the 80s on a $300 nickel plated Gemignhardt and now I have a handmade 900 series Yamaha with a Prima Sankyo head joint - so seeing the flute levels reminds me of progressing through playing levels. That Haynes sounds big and open and like you're just sailing on it, but I have arthritis in my left shoulder from playing for 30 years, no way I could hold a platinum flute for hours! I got a Gemeinhardt 3B for an intermediate flute. I actually bought it new off of eBay (sounds bad I know) but it was a newer model that was made in China. My local brass and woodwind repair shop said that was the first Gemeinhardt flute that was made in China and has a beautiful sound to it because when some of his customers talked about it they did say that the quality of the instrument would go down. My father did pay $300-400 on it. Not bad, and yes Gemeinhardt did move their factories to China.

I also play on a Platinum Wm. S. Haynes Flute , with a 14 K Rose Gold mechanism , B footjoint , offset G keys , C Sharp Trill Key , and it is completely hand engraved , so it is a far different Flute from my first instrument , which was a nickel-plated , closed hole , C footjoint BUNDY Flute !!! However , I still own and love my chilhood Flute , which I still occasionally play !!! The Haynes is just a little bit more fancy than my BUNDY Flute !!!! And , I just love to watch all your Flute videos , they are awesome !!!

Yeah - there were no flies on the Gemeinhart - it played great. What I noticed about the platinum flute was an increased level of overall sound power and sonority, but the tone quality got a bit brash, brassy and overblown at times. Of course, I don't know how heavy it was, or how difficult it was to hold up - I have to take your word on that.

Would like to see a double tonguing video about how the tone and articulation change when you do different things like tongue near front of mouth vs back, blowing too hard, how the tonguing changes w the air in high vs low notes

incredible how much fuller the tone and volume 83,500 can do to a flute. :) nice work. nice perspective. I am feeling better about my Emerson open hole.

Video suggestion: How to get a clear sound on piccolo! I’ve been struggling transferring my flute chops to piccolo especially in the piccolos low range.

I recently was exploring Miyazawa’s website and reading about their artists, it’s incredible how many players are actually on platinum flutes as their main instrument, and that was just Miyazawa. I am sure there are lots of Haynes and other makers of platinum flutes that have several artists on them.

Much better tone quality on the Hanes, of course. I remember our high school woodwind instructor at Band Camp in 1973; she had a gold flute with a great tone quality.

That was fun to watch! :) Maybe you could show (and play) us some of your favourite pieces. I'm always looking for new pieces to play :)

Gemmeinhardt 2SP was the first flûte I played 30 years ago. I liked her. Now I play an Altus 907.

Platinum Powell # 365 sold at Christie’s auction house for $187,000 in 1987, making it the most expensive flute in history. You play beautifully, by the way!

Molly Peck OOOO this is a good question- definitely offset G, open holes, C # trill key is a MUST, and I would love to have a convertible B/C footjoint. What about you? ☺️

What's funny is, flutes aren't that expensive compared to a lot of instruments. Violins, anyone? All the rest of the strings too. They cost a LOT. A good tuba is $30k - $50k. Pro-level trumpets start at 3 grand and go up from there. And all this stuff is just made of wood and brass and stuff, while with flutes for some reason precious metals are used. Maybe it'd density? Maybe someone should make a flute out of osmium?

A pro level flute is about £10k to £20k. Not sure about a Tuba costing 30-50k, I’ll ask my colleague how much he paid.

I scrolled down into the comments and could immediately tell the difference in what flute you were playing. The tone to the more expensive one is so much nicer.

I'm a violinist, and just learning to play a cheap beginner flute. I could definitely hear a difference in the two! The Haynes definitely has a richer tone, but they both sound great in your capable hands!
