Absolutely agree about dropping the “reduced guilt” tagline from the Mac & cheese. Toxic diet culture phrases like that are contributing to eating disorders-there’s no reason for anyone to feel guilty for enjoying any type of food!
@njames042 жыл бұрын
Great point made by your coworker! I had never really thought of that but it makes so much sense. All food should be guilt free and carry no moral value 💙

I think they should change reduced guilt to reduced fat/calories or something similar. Having a negative emotion on packaging is never a good idea especially when it comes to food and our toxic culture with food and body size. I love the cold pressed watermelon juice. I love drinking it on a hot day. Looking forward to seeing how you like the vegan sour cream.

as someone who has suffered from an eating disorder i definitely see her point about the Reduced Guilt mac and cheese. i can’t think of any alternative names but maybe something like Fat Free or whatever it is that makes it “reduced guilt”

Reduced quilt is just what it is. It’s obvious it has less calories than the other versions. The titles don’t always have to be a marketing ploy to boost sales. It’s fine.

I personally do not care for the flavor or texture of the kite hill cream cheese, so I’m curious about the sour cream. I’m not vegan, but I am lactose intolerant so I’m always looking for something tasty that won’t hurt the belly! I’m interested to see what you think of the sour cream 😊 And I think “reduced guilt” is fine. If they removed it, maybe they could label the other products with “supreme indulgence” instead 🤪

I think all the Mac and cheese should stay together. The less guilt version is just one of the options they carry. I don't think it would guilt somebody into buying it if they wanted one of the other kinds.Unless you were going to set up the whole store that way ( low calorie, vegan, gluten-free etc..etc.. ) Just moving one product away from similar products doesn't make sense to me.

I think "Reduced Guilt" is more tongue in cheek/TJ humor, and not meant to be taken super seriously. It's a nod to the folks into watching carbs & whatnot, like "Here's a fun option." I havo no strict diet, but i find myself preferring some Gluten Free options (Mac & cheese, Chicken tenders, etc.)

Great video as usual Katie! Since TJs doesn't have a standard advertising portfolio, the packaging is their marketing plan. Their execs have said just as much on the official TJ podcast. Based on that info, I agree the product name has a lot of meaning because (I hope) a lot of work went into it. That said, food doesn't have feelings; therefore, it should never be assigned morality like guilt. That's one of the reasons for so many eating disorders. I might be getting a bit deep but I think TJs would be better off just calling it what it is - a different version.

I want to say that the reduced guilt mac and cheese has been around for alot longer than most of the other mac and cheese options, back when there may have been only the two options: regular and reduced guilt. Back then alot of people were just as weary of terms just as 'low fat', 'low calories'. To me those terms can still sometimes mean 'more artificial' 'less nutritious, more filler' versus a more traditional 'full fat' meal.

The watermelon juice, the comment said allowing the "oil" to retain its properties......what oil? The reduced guilt mac and cheese is one of my faves, but I also enjoy the diner style one, too.
@mouseofthehouse9292 жыл бұрын
There are oils in the seeds of fruit and in citrus fruits, and other fruits. I think she might have either meant that or cold pressed fruit oil is also a thing. When something is fruit flavored with natural flavors a lot of times it comes from the fruits oils. Also found in the rind. 😊

“Reduced guilt” can be a trigger for those suffering or who have suffered from an eating disorder. The implication is you should feel guilty for eating macaroni and cheese, and morality shouldn’t be attributed to food. I know Trader Joe’s means no harm, they were just trying to be more interesting than “low fat, low calorie” and the vast majority of people will take it at face value. There just may be people out there who it bothers.

Is the TJ's sunscreen reef safe? That's so important for beach going in places like Hawaii. If so then that makes it a great buy! I have never given the reduced guilt label much thought. @keeperofsecrets882 жыл бұрын
I agree about the reduced guilt, it's diet culture garbage! Guilt shouldn't be associated with what we eat, talk about how the ingredients are better for your physical health. Things like this can easily encourage eating disorders, especially a frozen mac & cheese, a major target audience is college kids & it's just icky to enforce that mindset. I LOVE mac & cheese & I've never bought it because of the name so it absolutely has an affect on how people shop

They should absolutely change the name. As someone who has suffered from an eating disorder since I was a teenager, negative connotations with food are not healthy for anyone. Food should never feel guilty. It’s normalized to talk about “cheat days” or “guilty pleasure” but it implies you can’t get eat those items as apart of a normal, healthy, and balanced diet which is not true at all. I still get triggered when people openly talk about calories/macros or having to “work off the food” they ate.

The name of the product doesn't affect my choice to not buy the other varieties. As someone who has struggled with weight for years though i have found that labeling foods as guilty or bad to be unhelpful in a healthy relationship with food. LOL--the vegan Korean "beef" is shown as 1/3 of the packag = 1 serving. I think that's only because if they showed you that the whole package is almost 700 calories most people would avoid it. As to the Guilt Free Mac & Cheese, that is just a way of saying low fat. Since nutritionists are advising us to avoid "low fat" products because they mess up our metabolism this is a way of trying to say it's healthy for you. I can't imagine it would impact the purchase of other mac & cheese products because lots of people are avoiding the low fat products & because mostly people are going to buy what they like. If you want to eat something that is lower in calories mac & cheese is probably not your first choice;-> As always thank you for providing us such good information. I can't wait to try the vegan sour cream to see if it is as good (or better) than the vegan yogurt I normally use in place of sour cream.
