The longest time the Doctor has spent with a companion in the show is Handles at like 300 years... Yes, I'm counting Handles

Always count Handles. 11 must've spent so long just talking to him all alone at points that it's so sad when he goes.

"I would simply pass out if a man than fine walked in and offered me food" Fking WORD (and if, you know, Jacob Anderson and Sam Reid were to say, come along with him while he was offering the food then the more the merrier! 🤣) I just realized it was a year ago (last year's Who Christmas special) that I subbed to your channel and I'm so glad I did. Thanks for all the great content and I hope you had a great Christmas!

Awhhhh you’ve been here a YEAR ?! Thank you so much for sticking with me ❤️ (and happy holidays !) Ps : BIG thumbs up for the IWTV reference !

@@katieoshaughnessy8086 I couldn't resist the reference! LOL You actually convinced me to watch IWTV to be honest (I'm sort of out of new shows to watch) so I was bored one day and watched your reaction to the season 3 trailer. Started watching the show when it dropped on Netflix earlier this year and now I'm a little obsessed so thank you (no snark) for that

Last years was definitely more fun. But I thought this one was a reminder of the melancholy that comes with the holidays, when you lose a loved one or you’re alone etc. It was very heartfelt and so I think it ultimately had more impact on me.

Yeah,I liked the themes of it. Just hit too close to home. I lost two grandparents this year so it kinda felt like being kicked in the gut with a reminder.

@ I’m so sorry to hear that ❤️🩹 Yeah when it catches you off guard like that I can definitely see it being a hard watch. And the promotion for the special did not convey at all it would be so…melancholy.

If you recall, Matt Smith's Doctor spent a year with Rory and Amy in the episode with all the little boxes.

That's one of the things I love about Doctor Who! For 11 living a year in earth was positively unbearable! It drove him bonkers, living time in order, not having constant danger and mystery and puzzles, but 15? No, he lives a year and has a blast, makes a friend and solves the mystery in the end! These are the same person but different characters and it just works!

I cried so many times during this episode, but I feel like it was one of the better scripts Ncutti has had so far.

LOVE THE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS! As for the story, it didn't feel too Christmas-y until the end and I figured out what star they were going for. As for Joy, I didn't care about her as much as I did the hotelier. She could count as a Companion! In fact, I definitely think there's space for a series of adventures in that time The Doctor was staying there.

This is in my personal top three new new Who episodes. I have struggled with RTD’s writing since he came back apart from a couple episodes, and this one being a Moffat episode made a big difference to me. Also good to have an episode fully committed to Ncuti, as we really missed that last season given he was away filming other things for most of it. I have no doubt Ncuti can be a great doctor with the right writing (as this backed up), I just worry RTD’s best days are behind him, and he will never be able to produce quality like the Tennant era again. Ruby was the saving grace for me last season and I’m gutted she has quit, there was obviously something she was incredibly unhappy with given she quit basically after one round of filming (most of next season was filmed back to back to last one). Possibly having to carry large parts of the show with Ncuti being away had something to do with it. I’m interested to see what the next companion is like, and with Ncuti available for more of the filming I’m hoping it will be better.

I thought this was well known by now, but those reports of her quitting or being fired were wrong.

Sorry but Tennant never had quality, he is so overrated.

I think my biggest issue with the episode was how fast paced it was. The problem I think primarily was that there were three characters Moffat wanted us to get attached to, but the issue is when you only have about an hour to do that - you need to work really hard to get a person to care about even one. There were no less than three characters that Moffat tried it with, and for me I think the result was that I didn't overly care too much for any of them? Not to say you can't pull it off, but it takes you actually focusing on them and not jumping around so much. I think the episode would've been much improved in my opinion if we just focused on Joy and making us care about her, that way the ending has a lot more impact as opposed to kind of relying heavily on the emotions that a lot of people have regarding losing loved ones. As it stands I don't even remember the names of the hotel guy who died or the hotel girl who The Doctor was meant to have spent a year with because it was rushed past so fast. They should've either been cut from the episode or somehow more actively worked into the plot, likely only one of them otherwise you run into the same issue you had with Jodie's TARDIS team where you're struggling to characterize way too many people at once. It seems like this episode was meant to serve the same purpose as like, Runaway Bride or Voyage of the Damned, where the goal here is to convey that the Doctor can't be alone - he needs a companion. The issue is that both of those episodes do a good job of conveying this, while also standing on their own as a good episode. Voyage of the Damned being a very good direct comparison, as much like here the companion doesn't survive the end of the story (at least in a conventional sense, they still 'survive').

I didn't think The Doctor and Joy spent enough time together to make that last conversation work. Plus when Joy had the briefcase on her wrist she was brainwashed so it doesn't feel great to let her go blow herself up just because she's cool with it

It was a rather blah episode for me. The time hotel idea was pretty nifty but it was really only used as a plot device rather than actually intrinsic to the plot. The story was a bit disjointed at times (the year taking the long path felt a bit out of nowhere and went nowhere, for example). Overall, it was fine, if a bit forgettable. It did it's duty as a Christmas story so I guess it was a success.

Yeah that was my main issue with it too, it seemed a bit all over the place. Still enjoyed it and the general message. Christmas specials are always different anyways and like you said , it did the job!

@@joshuajoshua2732 did they put religion in Dr. Who? Does this not mean, that it was not the birth of Jesus that caused the star to appear.. But then again how dare they add Christian imagery in an episode celebrating a Christian holiday...
