My first introduction to Japanese Swordsmanship, as a 12 year old, was Katori Shinto Ryu (unfortunately, not in person). I am now 55, have experienced a few 'schools/Ryu', and have been rewarded by the training. I still maintain 'Katori...' as the pinnacle of excellence. I can but dream...

It's still art. And Ritsuke Otake would use art. And I would use art. And you wouldn't understand that its art. Because you don't have the same definition of art as I do. Which means I am right.
@Tobeydude208 жыл бұрын
Hao Chao Tsi Minh "It's still art." No it is the oldest japanese martial art this is a fact you should do your research before you open your mouth. " And you wouldn't understand that its art." Yeah I am such a dumb westener right, good thing I have spent a lot of time with him at the Katori-jingū. Stop confusing words my dear friend. It is a practical martial art and yes it contains artish concepts but it still is a practical guide to killing people. Educate yourself before you talk about stuff you clearly have no knowledge about thank you.

I love how they battle for the center. That's what the secret was, control the center and deal a devastating strike. For those who don't study a samurai based art, what these guys are doing is coming down with strikes designed to take the center of the opponent. The more advanced/experienced swordsman will take center and deflect the opponent's sword just enough (unnoticeable in video) away from center mass that if he was to run the sword straight in, it would miss. You want the tip of your sword to point at center mass while deflecting your opponent's sword tip away from your center mass. Takes A LOT of skill and years of practice.
@Jotigliare10 жыл бұрын
all it's about the Kenjutsu style, in Niten Ichi Ryu Miyamoto Musashi talk about the high position in the battle field, trying to locate the opponents in a line, not all around yourself, if you have this line you will fight with one o two opponents at the same time, but if you are in the center all the opponents can kill to you at the same time, in the video the man is not looking for the center, he was in the center when the fight it's starting, this that i think only

Travelling to Japan won’t really do much except a good holiday and a chance to learn the lingo and try the good food. There are Thanks to the ease of modern travel and Social Media networks there are Wester instructors now that are just as good. Here is a tip. Whenever you get a Teacher politely ask to see their System License and their Teaching License any real teacher will gladly show their credentials. This is how you know they’re legit. 😂 I bet you didn’t think it was that easy. Anyway all the best with your sword travels

Looking at this style it seems very flashy and acrobatic compared to ZKR Iaido. It is interesting to compare it to other styles. This styles "noto" and means of removing blood is different from what I learned. Very fascinating.

There is nothing at all flashy or acrobatic about Katori Shinto Ryu. Every move has a purpose. There are not wasted or flashy movements.

What is that at 4:00? He lets his hand off the hilt. I can't tell if it's part of a move he was already doing, or whether the other sword had gotten in under his hands.
@andoe103 жыл бұрын
As he goes for the neck, the other parson tries to cut his right wrest from the bottom so he lets go his hand off to avoid to get cut. You see this movement everywhere in this video if you look closely.

I wish I could "scream" while practising Muso Shinden Ryu :p But it's not in the spirit of "do" when it is in "jutsu", I suppose.
@Kungen94012710 жыл бұрын
The screaming (or "kiai" if you prefere the japanese word) has nothing to do with "do" or "jutsu". "Do" simply means "way and "jutsu" means technique. The reason you don't "scream" in Muso Shinden Ryu is because the ones who created that style of iaido didn't use kiai. Look at kendo. It is a "do". And they scream, a lot.

This is not sparring this is Kata, it teaches the fundamental cuts and moves. But the real core is hidden and you learn it very late, so if someone from another school sees the Kata he doesn't really know what to expect in a fight against a TSKSR member.

@chocolatedumdum29 жыл бұрын
kata = martial art form or a set of moves predetermined. One you might know of is the "draw sword and slash at opponent's temple or throat, deblood the blade, then reshealth." So in the video, all of the kata/forms look prearranged because they are, they are forms practiced over and over again to engrain muscle memory. And just extra info., but the shinto ryu kata are forms that subliminally teach students lethal hits.
