The fact that you can’t imagine struggling this hard w/ basic survival should inspire grace and gratitude, and a clear understanding that when there’s people in situations you’ve never lived, you’re not qualified or knowledgeable enough to judge anyone. Enquiry can be helpful though (what could be worse than a physically abusive relationship? No, really: what could? Would it be reasonable/realistic for Grandma to fear these things for her granddaughter and baby great granddaughter, given where and when they’d been living?)

The problem with huge cities like New York and Sao Paulo here in Brazil, with millions of people one on top of the other, it´s virtually impossible for the police force to take care of everybody. At some point, they prioritized the crimes and unfortunately, domestic abuse was at that time considered low priority. Today I believe that at least in NY there are departments that deal with that and there are more resources for abused women to leave the relationship and find alternatives.

@livingitup9647
@livingitup9647 Жыл бұрын
@@colbypatterson8273 Ummm, you lost the plot, Colby. Katrina did NOT write that letter that the DA received which claimed Katrina would testify for the defense. Katrina did disappear and refused to participate with the prosecution, though, until that day when she walked into the courtroom during jury selection. At that point she DID participate in the process. However, the indeed broken system GAVE her perpetrator a plea deal, instead of continuing with the trial! The Judge did NOT have to do that! Nor, did the Judge have to give the b**tard such a lenient sentence! So, your criticism here, of Katrina, when you said, 'THEN she has the audacity to say the criminal justice system is broken!! Noooo no no it's just fine if she just would have worked with the prosecution like a sane human being that guy would have gotten life or at least like 40 years,' is just a distorted view and has no basis in fact. The system fails victims every damn day in this country, in myriad ways, and in every jurisdiction. There is no real equal justice, it is only an ideal. We may have one of the best justice systems in the world, but it is far from meting out parity and fairness on a consistent basis. I see it as a bit of a crap shoot, with victims often being at the mercy of all the players involved, and all the agendas they serve. In Katrina's case, the prevailing players with agendas were the the 'good ole' boys' network of the N.Y. Police Dept., and then the Judge who refused to give her perpetrator the sentence he deserved.

Same here. I didn't cry but watching this touched on many feelings and emotions. This woman went from being content with just having a man with a job and a nice car to realizing that she was so much more than that. She may have never came to those conclusions if she didn't go through what she went through. She had to display strength that she didn't even know she had. I have the utmost respect for this lady for so many reasons. The guy was a real pos and so was his mother. The grandmother was dead wrong. How could she tell her grandchild to stay in an abusive relationship?

God she’s so inspirational, I’m absolutely amazed by her. I’m a child abuse survivor, my mother psychologically abused me and allowed my brother to violently attack me, and like Katrina it was sheer will that got me through it all and not wanting to give up, to live a good life in spite of my biological family. I escaped with help from a young persons charity at 19, kept low contact but the abuse never stopped, it just changed. Got the medical help I needed for all my health conditions and disabilities as an adult, and whilst my health may worsen (I’ve PTSD and nerve damage, mostly bedridden crippled), I’m gunna try and strive for a happy life in spite of them. Your abusers take something from you, but the strength you gain? That’s something they’ll never take from you. I cut all contact with them at around 26, I was truly by myself and whilst that loneliness and fear was a LOT and felt all encompassing, I learnt that I was enough, being by myself was enough, that even if I never had anyone in my life I was okay, that I myself was truly enough. I made my own family with people I love, I have an unofficially adoptive sister who’s a childhood best friend and been there with me, I’ve a best friend who’s another abuse survivor who I live with and we’ve become family to each other, being there when the other needs it even if it’s to scream at the world. You are enough, you don’t owe anyone your love or loyalty when they dehumanise you, abuse you, treat you in these ways, it’s okay to walk away from a husband, a wife, your mother, your father, and say “enough is enough”, it’s okay to completely cut all contact and escape, it’s okay to fear the unknown during this time, and it’s okay to reach out for help. There’s charities willing to help domestic abuse survivors, child abuse survivors, recovering addicts, those with mental health issues, and I cannot emphasise how much these charities help out. It’s truly okay to say “I’m not doing okay” and ask for help. It’s hard admitting you need the help, but those people won’t judge you, they’ll happily help you along the path. You are enough in this world.

It meant a lot to read your story. As, I have said many times. Both, publicly and privately. I read about things, that for many years. I doubted the validity of what I was reading. Of, course that was many years ago. Over time. I’ve raised children. Striven to better myself. Reached out to others whenever I could be of assistance. And, I stay away when I’m not wanted. In all my years on earth. No one has ever did anything worse to me. Than some of the things I’ve done to myself. Survivors, of some of the abuses I’ve heard about over the years. Are precious people to me. Especially the ones that at some point. Couldn’t continue to go further. Until they forgave their abusers. And, the only way they could figure out how to do that. Was to ask God to forgive themselves. You’re beautiful. I wish you happiness.

My 110 lb. niece, fresh out of high school in a very small town in Tennessee, was shot 5 times, talked her shooter into calling his best friend to come over, talked them both into driving her to the nearby hospital where, with one lung collapsed, they helped her walk into the emergency room. A nurse got wise and asked if one of the men shot her and she nodded. On duty in the emergency room was a new trauma surgeon hired two weeks earlier from New Orleans where he got lots of experience with gunshot wounds. She fully recovered and went on to become a flight attendant and retired after 20 years. Her shooter only spent 6 years in prison and committed suicide after getting out.
