小林 is the way Chibana Chosin Sensei wrote Shorin; some think it was a mistake, but the probable reason is that it was a way of honoring the Shaolin roots while also marking it as a distinct Martial Art from Shaolin 少林; both can be pronounced Shorin, but the first characters can also be pronounced as Kobayashi in Japanese, and that is how some call this school, although not those who belong to it.

Sorry for removing comments, but they somehow were repeated and difficult to understand: Chibana Sensei was the first to use the name Shorin, to honor its Chinese Shaolin roots. Okinawans had no problem with connecting to China, the old Okinawan name for Karate was To- de or To-te, "To" coming from "Tang", so it meant "Chinese hand". It was changed when Karate Do was taken to Japan.
