The thing that makes the biggest difference...PAPER! Don't use "marker paper" for water based markers. Use watercolour paper. It's like night and day! :)

Mixed media paper also works for water-based markers, they're just lighter GSM weight so they take fewer layers before curling. Water-based pigments and dyes are available in many mediums(tubes and palettes, pencils, crayons, inks, and markers) and they all blend nicely with a reservoir water brush.

I love the results of both but the texture in the water based markers really takes first place for me!

Adorable illustration as always! My two cents about water-based markers as someone that uses both: I think that they are both great. For water-based markers, I mainly use the Tombow Dual Brush Pens or Marvy Uchida Color in markers. I discovered that working on the smooth/shiny side of poster board paper or a thick, smooth cardstock works wonders for water-based markers. Although they lay on slightly lighter than what they would look like on something like bristol board or marker paper, they blend beautifully. They do smudge quite a bit as the ink sort of sits on top so you can work with it easily. With inking, I always just do it before or after, leaving a day or two before/after the coloring. This for me is helpful as many water-based brush pen nibs are felt-tipped, so I avoid fraying the nibs quickly if I used them on other paper that is not as smooth.

I don't know how I never made the connection that water-based markers could be used for watercolor techniques! I think for this illustration I actually like the water-based marker one better because the texture of the fur suits the image better than the smoother blending of the alcohol markers. I haven't seen a video comparing alcohol and water based markers of the same brand before, so it's a good one!

I love how you showed the effects of both. Since they don't affect each other I would have liked to have seen a third one where you used them together as even another example of how to use their strengths which should compliment each other. Of course you would have to also compare that on different paper as well to find the best suitable match.

Tip : If you want the water based marker to be smoother like alcohol marker , i definitely to use colorless blender to smooth the paper. So when you color it with water based markers on the paper that smoothed out by colorless blender it creates smooth effect just like alcohol marker . I got this idea from beret nice on her video in her channel .

I blend with my waterbased markers either by touching the tips together (doesn't actually stain!) and then colouring, or by colouring on a plastic lid (or palette I guess if I had one) and then blending the colours together on that then colouring. Plus they do work with water, so I've used my waterbrush pens to pick up from the plastic lid to make lighter shades with them. Found that works really well. Since most of the art I do is colouring in colouring books, I've not seen the point of buying any alcohol based markers as they are more expensive and would just bleed through.

do waterbased float more out to the sides? I have some sharpies and computerpapir, no issue at all. I actually need to say that I really don't 'prefer' anything when it comes to art mediums at all, as long as the quality is good and not like the Michael's markers for example, but what kind of art mediums I use really depends on what kind of art I want to create, and that includes texture, the way it turns out on the paper, whta kind of paper I use etc, I even like to mix different art mediums in ways that maybe some people wouldn't usually do, 'cause like I said; It totally depends on what I want to create in that very moment and how I want it to look in the end. Even the style of my drawing and painting varies in that way and I like to experiment with different combinations of art mediums and even crafting materials sometimes. My level of creativity is very wide and mostly just for fun and because it makes me feel good, so therefor I really don't prefer anything, it all depends on what I feel like in that precise moment. Plus sometimes when you 'make mistakes' that can turn out to be some of the best things you've ever done some times, not to mention educational. So yeah, I'm just rambling on, sorry about that. Väldig bra, intressant och informativ video för övrigt! Jag är imponerad av dina alster här!
