In the Part Of Me movie, Katy Perry was in production with The Matrix who were successful with Britney Spears' In The Zone and Avril Lavigne's Let Go & Under My Skin. The label tried to force Katy to do material similar to Avril's, make her sing like Kelly Clarkson, be angry and aggressive with the lyrics. Katy's vision of veing different was ignored. A former employee could see that the label were more than happy "to crush (this girl) dreams for their own ego. They're not going to do anything with her." So she transferred Katy's files to Capitol Records, signed with them, put out I Kissed A Girl and the rest is as they say, history.

Interesting to hear about the inspiration from Alanis Morissette, since there's a video called "Katy Perry talks 'Circle the Drain'" where she brings up how that song was her "Alanis Morissette moment" on Teenage Dream due it being heavier in subject matter and feeling like a weight she needed to get off her chest. The song was about having to cut off a relationship with someone you care about if they repeatedly hold you down and realizing that you can't change them on your own if they don't want to change themselves. That alongside the more pop rock sound that hearkened back to One of the Boys made it one of my favorites on the album.

I think going back to punk/alt rock is kind of impossible based off her artistic growth and influence these days. What I crave the most on Katy is to explore the adult contemporary genre. PRISM has produced some of the raw and honest tracks such as; Ghost, Love Me, Double Rainbow, By The Grace Of God and It Takes Two. So I was so happy when she continued this feat on Witness and Smile with Miss You More, Daisies, Only Love and What Makes A Woman. This kind of genre would really suit her current public images as a new mom and established pop icon. She has great visions when creating a record, I just hope she notches that in her follow up album.

I think we wouldn't have got teenage dream if her debyt album was released in 2005 because if the debut album would have released she would have attained great success because her songs on that debut album are just fire. She would have focused more on pop rock seeing that it is on this that she got success. But at the same time we could have got teenage dream because even one of the boys had some rock elements still she knew that pure pop was main genre during that time so she made her sophomore album more pure pop and catchy and this is how we got Teenage dream. So basically katy is a trend chaser with all due respect. It is not bad to be a trend chaser to achieve success. So according to me her early albums depended on current trend that time

She sounds happier and more like herself in this songs. It's a shame this record got scrapped. Katy Perry misses history, she has so little albums...

Even though this album has not an official tracklist, is one of my favourites by her, her voice suits perfectly the pop/rock sound. It could be (for me) one of her best material ever released (if it was officially released; Box, diamonds, it’s okay to believe and simple are one of her best songs of all time). Fun fact: The Driveway was originally a bonus track of One of the boys instead of A cup of coffee, but since Miley had already re written and recorded the track, it was scrapped.
@popdissected44003 жыл бұрын
Oh, I definitely agree! I think some of these songs she never officially released are honestly some of her best! And wow, I didn't know that about "The Driveway"! Thanks for sharing 😃

Good job. Some mistakes, still, but they are inevitable. For example : "Breakout "was not intended to be included in an album, it was recorded by Katy as a demo to show. I did a lot of work to gather information on Katy's early career and it's not a simple matter. The reason why the scheduled release dates of shelved albums are unclear is that these were postponed multiple times. I agree that some of her songs written with Glen Ballard and Matt Thiessen are superior to those on "One of the boys", at least in my opinion : "Box" and "It's OK to believe" are among these.

This remember me when Katy said that her 3rd album was going to be dark and blablablah, but at then it ended being just pop... I don't think Katy will do that anymore since she doesn't really looks like if she's going to move from her safe zone...
@popdissected44003 жыл бұрын
Understandable. I know Katy wanted to go dark with what would eventually be "PRISM", however I know through her own personal journey she opted to find 'light' and 'hope' through dark times, which is why "PRISM" became what it was.
@anderramirez84333 жыл бұрын
@@popdissected4400 oh no no, I was thinking that she's always so luminous, like self empowerment, hope, overcoming, etc, but I think that when she said that, she was talking about the sound in comparison with her others works... Like at the end she said that thing about light just to get out of trouble...

Christian Rock music has always done decently well. Alot of secular artists (that I discovered years later- started out with a christian group. So its no surprise that Katy recorded a great Christian pop record. It seemed like she was destined to do well. Rebecca St James and Point of Grace also had interesting pop images and records similiar to Katy's in the late 90s.

tbh as a katycat for like.... 8 years now... im lowkey happy that album wasnt released cause if u think about it one of the boys is her worst album and the fact that during the 2003-2007 era it was usually just loud punk rock or very rock pop songs the album might have been even worse than one of the boys 9i do have the album btw) but just sayig she might have not succeeded if they didnt do what they did back then (in my opinion)
@popdissected44003 жыл бұрын
Who knows how her career could have gone! I personally love "One of the Boys" and think a good amount of tracks from 2003 - 2007 are really strong! I would have loved an official release of some of them.
