I loved the witness era! I remember immediately getting hooked back in 2017 with the Bon Appetit single. I even went to the Witness show later that year. Underrated!

Witness has some gems and the era started with a killer concept: futurism inspired by George Orwell's dystopian novel "1984" (and Katy was born in 1984, so double reference). "Chained to the Rhythm", the lead single, is clear on this concept: a critic to consumerism and the price that technology advances take on humans, all through an 80s lens. The photoshoot and most of the songs actually carry this 80s theme so well, on the production (I feel like she was inspired by "new wave" on some of the tracks) or the lyrics ("Deja Vu", "Mind Maze" and "Bigger than Me", for example). It's a shame that the label relied on features that added nothing (like "Bon Appetit") and petty drama (Taylor's "Bad Blood" is no genius, but "Swish Swish" comes off even more childish lol) instead of sticking to the theme that was constructed during the making of the album. I made a Spotify playlist without these songs and pretend the album was just the 80s inspired tracks

Bon Appetít is great and solo even better but Capitol made her collab with Migos Swish Swish is also great and Nicki verse is incredible I think they should've been later singles but 1st 3/4 should've been more on theme and aesthetic of the album : 1st Chained To The Rhythm 2nd Witness 3rd Déjà Vu 4th Power And then these 2 And last Save As Draft Promotional singles : Miss You More, Hey Hey Hey, Bigger Than Me

I remember a thread on twitter explaining the Witness album cover and here's what she said: The mouth/eye is a very old and popular concept from the Surrealism era in art. The Surrealist genius, Salvador Dalí, did it too. Nails: Orange is the color of transformation in many Buddhist philosophies based in Confucianism, is the balance between the Yin&Yang. Katy is covering her eyes cause she doesn't want us to see the transformation in a esthetically way. We need to hear, not see. Lastly, there's no typical name on it. Just a signature, the artist signing the painting she just made. Witness is her masterpiece. Basically, Katy's voice is gonna be the one guiding the new path she's starting.

Thank you so much for reacting to this album in an unbiased way, what was really sad about this era was that EVERYONE, even most of her fanbase turned on her and jumped on the hate bandwagon and didn't appreciate this masterpiece because was "cool" to hate Katy and didn't perform that well on charts (I still consider it to be a hit album btw) 😒] We'll never get another album like this, maybe she'll play safe for her future releases (even tho Smile is excellent, she didn't experiment a lot on that one), it was really way too ahead of its time and I'm happy it gets the recognition it deserves

Truly, this album was underrepresented ‘coz there are tons of songs in here that deserved to be a single. How I wanted Roulette to have its own music video, because that song is really great. Then there’s the self-titled Witness, Déjà Vu, Power, Miss You More, Bigger than Me…sounds like I’m just naming all of the songs in the album but well, I just think the songs Katy/company record or whoever that decided to choose which songs to be singles weren’t good choices except Chained to the Rhythm…really missed opportunity for some of the songs not becoming singles

Hey Hey Hey was released as the final single in 2018. Some radio impact didnt get much promo just a music video. Roulette was the missed opportunity to capitalize on the big dance hits of bon appetit and swish swish. It would have smashed every club out there. Its a timeless bop to this day still sounds fresh. Max Martin is one of my faves he does the best work with katy tove lo taylor swift Ariana and Britney all our pop girls

At first, I won't lie, but my only favorite was Tsunami. But, after giving it a second chance and listening to the entire album, I fell in love with Save As Draft and Miss You More because they gave me PRISM vibes, and I love that album with my whole being. Also, I ended up liking Hey, Hey, Hey, Roulette, Witness, Chained to the Rhythm, and Power. Also, you getting emotional on Miss You More was me when I heard the song in it's full duration, lol.

This album is incredibly underrated. I remember how I let everyon else's opinion about her and the album influence me and I didn't listen to it for a long time. One day I decided I wouldn't let anyone affect my opinion about someone and their art and so I decided to listen to it. I really like the album. The production, the lyrics and her vocal delivery is so good. 🔥 So many songs really had single potential. Chained to the Rhythm was the only single to chart the Top 5, it peaked at #4 so it was a success, but it was worrying during the time since Katy always tops the chart with a #1, so this album def was a change. The Album Peaked #1 but dropped to the Top 20 or 10 I think the week after. This album deserved more after all the promotion she did, even a 72 Hour Live Stream.

It’s a bit of a shame cause Chained to the Rhythm is literally my favorite lead single from her, but the rest of the album roll out was atrocious. Katy is quite literally my favorite artist, so I’m a little biased. I personally don’t think it’s a bad album, I just think Katy herself marketed it wrong. Ive listened to this album dozens and dozens of times, and I’m of the opinion that some of the tracks are a bit underwritten (as far as lyrics go) as well. That being said this is easily her best sounding album to me. The sound is so crisp and clean. The production is immaculate! I do think this album will be reviewed more favorably come another five or so years. Look at Teenage Dream: it was basically critically panned on its original release, but now is being critically reevaluated as perhaps one of the the best albums of the 2010s. We will have to see if the same happens with Witness. It’s not my favorite album of hers, but I always thought it was a good effort.

The wildest thing about this Album and this era as a whole is the fact that I can even understand the public's negative perception of the music itself, because of the negative press around Katy at the time.. but I can't understand the critical reception of this album being so negative, it was so unbelievably beaten down and panned in ROUNDS by almost every critic on the internet.. and critics are supposed to judge the MUSIC. Just goes to show how critics aren't really that unbiased from the media influence and will gladly leave a negative review if it gets them traction on a site. because negativity amongst already existing negativity perpetuates more negativity easily, right? And more people are willing to click on a negative review more than a positive one when the subject is already under negative press.

If BA wasn't a single or even on the album, I think this era would have gone over way better. The promotion for that song was, to me, her lowest point in her public image. So many memes were made from the imagery of her head in a pie, the 24 hour stream, "is math related to science", the SNL performance; it was rough as hell. Roulette would have made a way better second single and representation of the album.

She singing for Hilary Clinton during the vote and when she lost (who Donald Trump won), Katy was devasted by this lost and starting to write inspired by that and this is how ''Chained to the Rhythm'' was born. ''Chained to the Rhythm'' was a political song and the music video also employed this element who the peoples living in a bubble. Never liked Katy’s music. Witness changed my view of her. She was laid it down on the album. There are a few misses here and there, but it was def ahead of it’s time. I’m just mad Swish Swish wasn’t a bonus track. It’s kinda outta place, but I can understand why it was placed there. Nevertheless, whoever cleared the hook on Mind Maze needs their fingers broken. That was a major fumble IMHO. Otherwise, they chose the WRONG singles and I don’t think the label liked this album.

Swish Swish was heavvvvvily promoted with the video (corny affffffffff) and ruined any anticipation for the album tbh. The album is too good so I feel you with having missed this era in its prime lol
