Wow, I See Alot Of Butt Hurt People In These Comments. I Can Understand You Not Liking A Movie Because Of The Writing, Acting, Directing, Or Even The Tone. Everyone Has Their Own Opinions. But To Not Like A Movie Because Your Weird Cultish Self Is Just So Attached To The Original, That You Dont Want To Accept Anything Else. Because You Think You Trashing This One, Or Any Other Remake Is Your Weird Way Of Showing Love And Respect To The Original. That's So Childish. That's Not A Damn Opinion. I Don't Know Whats Up With People And Their Weird Obsession, To Want To Defend Something That Doesn't Even Need To Be Defended. This Is Technically Not Even A Remake, Its So Much Different From The Original And Actually Tries To Translate The Book On To The Screen. That Can Be Considered A Different Movie. Another Point... The Reason For These Remakes Being Made Are To Keep The IPs Alive And Let The Next Generation Experience Them In Their Way And In A Updated Time And Format. But Yall Don't Think About That, Yall So Worried That Original Will Get Burried. When It's Actually The Opposite, Every Time The Remake Comes Out It Gets People Interested In The Original. Especially When Some Of Yall Won't Shut Up Crying About The Original. Yes I Know People Don't Like Cash Grabs And That's Another Reason Why People Will Hate On Reactions. But That Still Hits On My Topic, WHY?! Don't You Have Something More Important To Worry About? Also Just Because It's A Remake Doesn't Mean It's For You! It's For The Next Generation, But Some Of Yall Are So Damn Selfish That Yall Don't Think Of That Either. My Goodness Some People Really Can't Read, My Comment Is Not Up For Interpretation. My Comment Is So Straight And Simple, It Is What It Is. People Bringin Up Other Stuff That has Nothing Do To With What I'm Saying.

Willy Wonka is meant to be a creepy character throughout the tour, because he hasn't interacted with other humans for a very long time, and Johnny Depp perfected that. His facial expressions are great too. And Wonka's that pale compared to his younger self because he hasn't seen the Sun in a long time too. When Wonka passes by the pink sheep in the glass elevator, the reason he says "I don't want to talk about it" is because that is a reference to Ed Wood, another film by Tim Burton that Johnny Depp starred in. And Depp's character in Ed Wood had a fondness for pink angora sweaters. The Smilex toothpaste is another reference to a Tim Burton movie as Smylex was the codename for Joker's poison in the 1989 Batman movie. The soundtrack remains a masterpiece. I mean the decision to make each song a tribute to a different era of music was perfect. Especially for Mike Teavee to show the many things you could watch on TV, but just because you watch TV doesn't mean you know everything, and that TV can be wrong. Also, who wouldn't want to sing about how great your master is while being burned? Elfman's (and Daul for the lyrics) a genius, big respect for him, especially since he had to compose the music for the movie simultaneously with The Corpse Bride

I always felt like this version was judged very harshly; especially since it is not a remake of the Gene Wilder Version like so many claim, it was always meant to be a seperate film, and also something that is very ironic is that people judge it for not being accurate to the Gene Wilder version, yet this film is more accurate to the original book than the Gene Wilder Version ever was, so much so that even Roald Dahl's family felt it was more respectful to his work, wheras Roald Dahl (oddly enough) despised the Gene Wilder version and considered it a travesty just to be clear, this is not saying that people aren't allowed to enjoy the Gene Wilder version, I enjoy that film as well, but I hope my comment will give some perspective to this film's harsh judgement, especially since some of y'all in this comment section are kinda crazy, like I get not liking a film but y'all don't need to be disrespectful to someone who died ok? For the Chocolate Room: Production designer Alex McDowell insisted on having the river look edible. Burton wanted the river to have a real chocolatey feel and not just brown water, so they came up with a faux chocolate concoction, taking months to create a non-toxic edible substance with the right consistency. The final mixture was a mix of water and a thickening agent known as Natrosol, with food dye used to achieve the brown coloring. Wonka's boat took 20 weeks to build and incorporated 54 animatronic Oompa-Loompas, along with its own internal rowing mechanism! For the squirrels: A good number of them were real! In total, there were 40 real squirrels, which were professionally trained by Animal trainer Michael Alexander and his team. They spent a total of 19 weeks training these squirrels for this one scene. The squirrels were trained to sit on stools while they opened shells and dropped them onto a conveyor belt. Originally they wanted to train 100 squirrels, however due to the fact that squirrels can be difficult to handle and unpredictable, they trained 40 and the rest was animated in afterwards.

I've always loved this movie, heck, I've dressed up as Depp's Wonka two years in a row for Halloween when I was a kid! It's true that Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is more faithful to the book than the Gene Wilder version. The Prince Pondicherry moment is from the book. In the book, Charlie's father is alive, just like in this movie. And Veruca met her demise after her desire for a squirrel in the book just like in this movie. But the biggest thing from the book that the original Gene Wilder version didn't do is use the lyrics for the Oompa Loompa songs from the book. While Danny Elfman worked on the soundtrack, Daul is credited with the lyrics as all four songs utilize lyrics direct from the book. As for the Oompa Loompas, the actor's name is Deep Roy. Roy had extensive training for the role in dance, yoga, and some minor instrument playing. Tim asked him to play five Oompa Loompas, but five quickly became 165. He said how for example there were 21 of them in a scene and as he acted out each one, they'd bring in professional dancers because he of course couldn't do all 21 at the same time. Deep Roy's dedication in stepping into all 165 roles prompted Burton to call him the "hardest-working man in show biz". The Augustus Gloop song is a Bollywood spectacle because that was Deep's suggestion! And for the vocals, that is Elfman's voice with pitch changes and modulations!

I much prefer this version to the original. I like the expansions to Wonka's character and really explores how isolation can affect a person, the music and visuals are more creative and unique to me (the original only has three songs, as the Oompa Loompa songs are all the same music with different lyrics, and that's the only reason it's memorable is because of the repetition), it sticks more closely to the book, and involved the family of the original author to honor his work. The original was made only to sell tie-in candy (for real, hence why the original is called Willy Wonka as opposed to Charlie) and shoved out the original author from the process, making him not, understandably, care for that version.

You know, funny enough, when my family saw this movie back in 2005, the thing that creeped my mom out the most about Depp’s Wonka wasn’t the voice, the hair, or the pale skin, but the TEETH! They were too perfect.

Edward Scissorhands is my fave Johnny Depp movie. It's what made me fall in love with him as an actor.
@gabrielhagedorn594210 ай бұрын
I absolutely love the darker, weirder tone that this movie went for. Personally, I just prefer when movies do that in general, but it’s also relevant because it’s more faithful to the book. Also, people like to hate on Depp’s Wonka performance, but it makes perfect sense that Wonka would be so weird after being locked up in his factory alone for decades while having to deal with daddy issues.

de todos modos la rareza es la naturaleza dde Willy Wonka incluso en el libro, Dahl no lo especifico pero cuando lees el personaje en si siempre ha sido raro.

17:11 I think Wonka takes them there to teach them lessons, you know? It’s like Jigsaw but without the murders. 😂😂😂 22:32 My favorite is probably Sweeney Todd the Demon Barber of Fleet Street. 💈 He acts and sings well! Plus, he won the golden globe for that performance. 😊 28:41 Veruca’s song is my favorite. It has that 60’s Sunshine Pop sound that I like. 💛 One thing, if you noticed, Charlie is the only child that Wonka didn’t refer to as little boy or little girl. He knew how good Charlie was. Maybe that’s why he told Violet he didn’t care about her name. Lol

Anyway, so if no one mentioned this: The lyrics of the songs are the songs that Dahl wrote in the books. The first movie's Oompa Loompa songs were also hated by him.

I love this version the best because of Tim Burton and his style of metaphor. there are things that doesn’t make sense but you got to watch it from Wonka’s perspective. For example when he finally visited his dad in the middle of nowhere. He didn’t actually lived in the mountains, but Wonka’s relationship with his dad was to far that him trying to reconnect is as hard as climbing mount Everest.

But i was a young child when i saw both so i guess its easier to enjoy and accept a fresh new take on a beloved classic through the lense of childhood. I still adore both movies. I love that theyre so different. I wish more remakes would try to do something different

Mel, I am also team Tim Burton version as well. Also, the author of the book disowned the original film as well. I actually read the book in the third grade as a class and we watched the film afterwards. I never really cared for either one growing up. It was not until this version came out that got me interested because it was a Tim Burton film. It was a movie that I was able to enjoy watching with my siblings as well. I would much prefer Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka because Gene Wilder seems very offputting, especially when he was screaming at the end. The original had songs that I do not care for while the Tim Burton film songs are really catchy. I could go on and on of my preferences on this version but I understand that the original is very important for the people who grew up with it. It's too bad that many admirers of original films and other nostalgia tend to be too protective and nasty to everyone who dares think differently. If a movie is made well, that is what's really important. If you want an example of a movie where the original is way better than the remake, then look no further than Red Dawn. I also have another film version that I liked better than the original and that is Footloose. The remake came out while I was in high school and I loved the more modernity and music (I loved David Banner's song "Dance the Night Away).

with the first song with the oompa loompas i remember seeing some behind the scenes footage where it was the actor doing the same dance repeatedly in the different spots they are seen in the movie. this is also one of the movies where it just blew me away with how behind the scenes movie magic works and is built

This is the definitive version for me, I love the original film but instead of having Gene Wilder stealing the show with a bunch of memorable scenes, this version has every cast member pulling their weight and every scene is burned into my brain for how interesting and tonally unique it is. And I love the soundtrack to bits, listen to bits and pieces of it now and then.

The two are so different, I have to remind myself that they're technically covering the same material haha! I like them both for different reasons - the first just feels "nostalgic", like a movie I can watch during the holidays every year and feel connected to my grandparents and the 2005 film is one I can just watch over and over again because (as a 90s baby) I grew up with it. Johnny is such a talented actor and he brought the role to life, in my opinion.

The difference in my opinion between Willy wonka and Charlie and the chocolate factory is different levels of imagination from the book. While yes willy wonka was more of a musical experience than more of a CGI. Charlie and the chocolate factory had a different type of music genre for each kid that got booted. Augustus gloop was broadway. Violet was disco. Verucca was 60's/woodstock. Finally Mike was Rock. There were a lot of references to the first one. There's no knowing where they're going. That was gene wilder. I literally got done writing the music genre thing 2 minutes before you said it. Lol

I’m sure someone in your comments already beat me to this, but the actor who played all of the fkn Oompa Loompa’s went to the BANK for this movie. He performed all of his parts in separate takes that were put together to make the final product you see in the movie (rather than just one performance and then CGI’ing the rest of them into place) he did *every single movement* you see, individually, probably over hundreds, if not, thousands of takes.

i think people need to grow up and understand that producers that want to make a movie based off a book, they're not gonna go BY the book. not every single detail has to be included in the movie. every director and producer has their own spin to their movies, yes the original was great, but what makes ted burtons' willy wonka so good is his spin on it. johnny depps' acting was great. move along people

25:48 Mell, let me TELL you, Burton cut out some parts that couldve made it creepy (creepier if you thought it had a creepy vibe already). When the whole world is on its craze for hunting down the golden ticket, there was a scene in the book where a scientist made a machine to detect the slightest bit of gold and grab it to find a ticket, but it went haywire and tried to grab a gold filling from a duchess who was watching the demonstration. All it said about the aftermath was it was an "ugly scene" with the crowd destroying the machine (i shuddered thinking about what went down), but Violet's song had me wondering 'how on earth did this get through the publisher??' The majority of the song is a story of a woman who loved chewing gum so much, she would chew on whatever she had nearby if she didn't have gum, including a pair of boots, the mailman's ear and her boyfriend's nose! (I'm sorry if you're uncomfortable already but that's not where it ends) then one night she goes to bed, putting her gum on a tray but her jaw was so used to the chewing motion, she chewed in her sleep until she bit her tongue in two! 😵😱 i unlocked a new fear that day, and i was an adult when i finally decided to read the book..

@IanHollis10 ай бұрын
They didn't CGI to multiply the Oompa Loompas. That was their initial intention, but they just couldn't get it to look right, so they had the actor (Deep Roy) shoot and reshoot the Oompa Loompa dances in every location they're in. (Or so I believe).

For several reasons, I always FAR preferred this version: - More book accurate (for those who say book accuracy doesn't matter, tell that to fans of Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Hunger Games, Game of Thrones, Percy Jackson etc.) - Better, more conclusive ending - Better overall characterisation (the original characters were really basic, flat, and expendable) - Mr Bucket exists - Better grandparents (contributed NOTHING in the original) - Unique atmosphere and tone - Amazing cinematography - Superb sets (with little CGI, mind you) - Varied and catchy music (not the same copy-paste template, including well-selected genres) - Wonka’s backstory (gives him depth and adds to his character) - Dahl hated the original movie (even said it was too sappy and saccharine) - It was trying to right the wrongs of the first movie, instead if being a commercial masked as a movie - Clearly had a LOT of work put into in when you look at behind-the-scenes facts, and was a PASSION project - NOT a remake of the first movie, another adaptation of the book (they made this movie as if the first one never existed, and tried to keep it separate as much as possible, even Depp put a different spin on Wonka without trying to be like Wilder's Wonka) It honestly feels like the only reason people like the original is because of nostalgia, because of the stupid mentality that the original is always the best, and because it's a cLaSsiC and they think the original movie is the source material when the source material is the book (which the 2005 movie does more justice to). I wanted to be one of those people who enjoys both movies, but I'm just so tired of the vitriol thrown at this movie be elitists of the first movie, that it's made me actively dislike the first movie. And I know said hardcore fanboys will show up in the replies.
