Non-chronological writing is fascinating to me. I'm not a writer, but if I were, I have a feeling that I would mostly write linearly, because I wouldn't trust myself to bring the right momentum or feeling to a scene without the buildup of getting there, you know? I feel Iike I might get excited and write a nonlinear scene, but when I would get to it linearly, I would likely want to change it. 😅 Knowing myself, I'd probably keep the scenes I'm excited for as "treats" to motivate myself to get through the least exciting bits. Otherwise I'd never get it done.

I find that there are certain scenes that require a certain mood...for when I write. I also don't mind starting in the middle or the end because its on my mind and I need it off my mind to focus on anything productive. That's how I as a non-chronological order writer work, but since I got the bulk of what I've written more or less fleshed in,I have now pushed onto a linear path because the chronological order is there.

@@alexpaleale well, I'm a reader, so I watch a lot of booktubers. I love Kat's personality and find her analytical way of approaching writing very interesting. Plus, it's fun to watch people do things I have no talent or inclination for (especially artistic people) :P

Looking at all of writing vlogs from Kat, Jesse, and Christine, I realize that I'm really just a mix of all them while writing. I tend to write better while pantsing (Christine), I do outline and tend to want to not chronologically write (Kat), and I tend to make revisions and edits while I'm writing or in the middle of a draft (Jesse).

i'm not a writer and the concept of writing half a chapter or like 30 words is so weird to me!! like i find it so difficult how is it even possible? how do you know the beginning of one chapter if you haven't finished the previous one? that's a talent to me because it means you know your book so well and the development that you don't have to wait. I definitely think i would not have been a planer, i don't think i could even separate the chapters..anyway hope you do great with this project and i can't wait to learn what genre it is!!!

The puzzle is a perfect analogy. I understand people who do chronological order because what happens in the beginning affects what happens later, but sometimes I get a lot of ideas for something that happens later on, and then the trick is to find how we got from point A to point B.

Best of luck. I've been tormented by the same story for years. I've tried starting other projects but this one just needs to be written. I'll not rest in peace until it has been placed on page. Thankfully its evolution is at a stage where it all makes sense. I just need to flesh out the characters.

I’ve never understood non-chronological writing but after your puzzle analogy I totally get it. I’ve done quite a few 1000 piece puzzles and now I’m writing a book and I _totally get_ how those two things are analogous. You can’t just stick in one place in a big puzzle! It’s impossible. And I know I get inspiration for later parts of my story as I write it as well. Personally though, I just assume based on the kind of person I am that _my_ inspiration for things that are really far off, is probably just trashy wish fulfillment and won’t be viable by the time I actually get there. Lol.

I'm a pantser...And a chronological writer. For me though I have later scenes i mind I can't write them before I have what comes before. CAUSE it's like how do I write these characters and situations as they are going to appear in future as the present when I have no idea how they got there. But for you who is an outliner and knows more of less each scene\chapter from beginning to end I can kind of see how you can jump around but I know I will never try. Your enthusiasm is uplifting and keeps me motivated to continue with my draft that is going on 2 years. I can't wait to see more of this project!

I will jump ahead to scribble little ideas down here and there, but otherwise I write chronologically, and cannot wrap my head around how anyone can write so non-chronologically! This makes me feel like such a lazy writer haha! I don’t plan chapters out; I just write and let the words take me! And I don’t have chapters at the moment, just a long section of text that I’ll chapter up later! Might not be the best idea, but it’s the way I write for some reason! I’m excited to see how your new project goes Kat! Please keep us updated!

I feel that's the perfect analogy for chronological writing. Plotting & drafting does feel like finding shuffled puzzle pieces. I've never been able to write chapters in order. I really love your writing vlogs! I'm really happy for your that your first week went so well! It's really helping me get back into my writing habits. Your other recent writing videos really helped inspire me and push me into buckling down really work on my book and write every day--something I've never been able to make myself do before--and it was so amazing! I got out of the habit because something came up and messed up my daily schedule for over a week and I'm still trying to get back to that. It's hard because I was only doing my new daily routine of getting up early, eating healthier, and writing for a few weeks, but I'm determined! Especially seeing you still in the middle of the struggle with the first draft because it makes me want to see you succeed and then see myself succeed as well! (I say "then" because you'll definitely finish before me because I can't quite write 1000 words a day yet, but I was so close before!) Also, side note, I'm really into K Pop and K Dramas myself and like BTS and this guy I work with recently started listening to their music and came up to talk to me about it one day because he knew I liked K Pop. Within a week of discovering BTS he also changed his phone back ground to one of them--I believe it was also Suga--learned almost all their names, watched tons of videos of them, got his hands on pictures of them from their album that he kept in his phone case, and gotten a TATTOO of the flower from the Love Yourself album. I love that K Pop is spreading!
