@ 00:17 co-owner Alan Dell says that when the restaurant first opened (in 1888, as "Iceland Brothers), the only food they had was "corned beef, pastrami and thyme". The place must have had more than that. Did they only spice those meats with thyme? How did they pickle them without salt, vinegar or brine? They had no bread? @ 01:36 , he says "there is no pastrami [on the west coast]". Umm, Los Angeles, San Diego and Salt Like City would beg to differ, each city having their own long, proud history of pastrami delis. @ 01:39 , he credits NYC tap water as a special baking ingredient. Many studies, such as on the shows America's Test Kitchen and Myth-busters and the scientific research firm Gizmodo have quashed this myth. Chemical studies by Gizmodo showed the mineral composition of NYC tap water is minuscule in difference compared to other municipal tap waters picked at random. Taste tests were done of NYC's drinking water and bakery products and observed no difference. Even die hard NYC water enthusiasts appeared to now know the difference.

+Mdriver1981 Unless you had a spell-checker gaff, Dell said all they had was "corned beef, pastrami, and tongue". And I'm sure they had the rest of the stuff to make these meats and the breads to put it on.

I gotta say, I dont really like corned beef and I like pastrami but from very few places. I went to Katz's and its definitely by far the best pastrami sandwich. I tried both. The corned beef was actually great and the pastrami was amazing. The pastrami is cut thick which normally cant be done because pastrami is usually chewy. This pastrami practically fell apart. In regards to parking,Its not easy to come by. There is a parking lot about 2 blocks down on the side street that Katz's is on the corner of. I think its like 10-12 bucks an hour. (Cheap for NYC standards)

I know the cost of living is high in that area, but i would have to make a serious income to drop 20-25 bucks on a sandwich, along with a hot dog or two and some latkes, which is going to give me a tab of 50-60 bucks, i am not going to pay half or a full days wages on a meal, i do not know what most jobs pay in that area, but i ain't going that route if it is not affordable.

The word purist should never be used in conjunction with pastrami. Pastrami would not exist if not for the fact that it's a bastardization.

@vault703overseer2
@vault703overseer2 8 жыл бұрын
Sure thing. Pastrami comes from the old Byzantine/Ottoman world. You can check it out for yourself. Just look up Pastourma or Pastirma. Pastrami as it's known in the United States is a variation of the Romanian version of this, supposedly brought over by Romanian Jews. This version is far from something one would call purist. Calls for purist pastrami are like call for purist French. How pure can their version of vulgar Latin really be? Oy vey!
