The word “Saptang” indicates seven limbs, constituents or elements.Seven
Angas, Prakritis, or elements were enumerated and elucidated by
Kautilya for describing “the nature of the State” in its totality. The seven components of a state are Svami (the king), Amatya (ministers), Janapada (the territory), Durga (a fortified capital), Kosha (the treasury), Danda (justice or force), and Mitra (ally).
