Bodhidharma is a fascinating historical figure -- his life is shrouded in mystery, and much of it has to be pieced together from a fragmented mix of sources, some contemporary, some written many centuries after his death in 528CE. However, there is no denying that he played a significant part in creating what we now know as "Kung Fu," and that he propagated Zen Buddhism in the East.
Today, we're diving into Bodhidharma's incredible legacy. Enjoy!

There are tumbling Japanese dolls called "Daruma" (だるま/達磨) that can be found in Japan everywhere (even) today. I thought it was well known, but then again not everyone is a Buddhist. Atisa is a Bengali Indian Monk who founded the Vajrayana Tibetan School of Buddhism. Chandragomin worked on Nagarjuna's work and expanded it to the east. Nagarjuna is one of the most prominent Buddhist philosopher. He is the one who discussed and wrote about the philosophy of emptiness.
@pagangod_Infinity

No offense. So why didn't the Bengali Indian Monk travel to China, Japan & Korea and establish the ZEN in Asia ?. BhodhiDharma is not just a Zen master, he was also a Ancient Tamil Martial Arts master and a PRINCE in the TAMIL PALLAVA KINGDOM, which means he is most capable, intelligent, Princely, wise, Martial arts skills, Influence, etc., and the FACT is it's BODIDHARMA who taught & skilled the Chinese, Japanese & Koreans. And it's the TAMIL KINGS & THEIR DESCENDANTS WHO WERE WELL ESTABLISHED & IN POWER & INFLUENCIAL IN ALL OF ASIA AND WERE VERY POWERFUL IN INDIAN OCEAN & BAY OF BENGAL(VANGALA VIRIKUDA in Tamil). SO just accept the TRUTH, REALITY & PAST HISTORY. The Tamils are elder brothers to all of Aganda India & Indians. And why are you so cringy to accept your ancient Tamil big brothers.
@xxibmeiji
@xxibmeiji 6 ай бұрын
My fellow brethren why are you trying to argue with me? I was just mentioning how every practicing Buddhist knew about Bodhidharma. I mentioned Atisa and Chandragomin because he missed them out. He also missed out on Nagarjuna and he's from Southern India aswell. I wouldn't usually reply to someone who's being all chauvinistic and egoistical but you're just being rude to everybody here. A bhikku renounces everything when he becomes a monk, Bodhidharma renounced his titles and past to preach Buddha's ideology and his wisdom to the people far and abroad. And as for your answer, Atisa did travel to Tibet and further east. Just like Bodhidharma and Siddhartha Gautama he was born to royalty and denounced his identity to preach morality and Buddhist ideology. He was also known to Sri Raja Raja's son Rajendra and was brought back to India from Srivijaya during the Tamil conquest. I am not renouncing Tamilians and their history but being chauvinistic wouldn't help you in anyway, it makes you look like a clown. Tamils are one of the oldest and most influential communities in the subcontinent. I am always proud of them as much as I am proud of my own ethnicity and other Indic people. FYI it's always the cringe tamil people who reject their history and contributions and try to create a rift with the 'us vs them' narrative. Sorry dude but grow up. Be proud of your heritage and identity but there's no reason for you to be rude to others. Your ancestors didn't do it so why are you? @@pagangod_Infinity

@@pagangod_InfinityBikrampur, the most probable place for Atiśa's birthplace, was the capital of the Pala Empire as it was of the ancient kingdoms of southeast Bengal. Though the city's exact location is not certain, it presently lies in the Munshiganj District of Bangladesh, and continues to be celebrated as an early center of Buddhist cultural, academic, and political life. Similar to Gautama Buddha, Atiśa was born into royalty. His father was a king known as Kalyanachandra and his mother was Shri Prabhavati. Raja Srichandra of Chandra dynasty was his grandfather. One of three royal brothers, Atiśa went by the name of Candragarbha during the first part of his life. According to Tibetan sources, Atiśa was ordained into the Mahāsāṃghika lineage at the age of twenty-eight by the Abbot Śīlarakṣita and studied almost all Buddhist and non-Buddhist schools of his time, including teachings from Vaishnavism, Shaivism, Tantric Hinduism and other practices. He also studied the sixty-four kinds of art, the art of music and the art of logic and accomplished these studies until the age of twenty-two. Among the many Buddhist lineages he studied, practised and transmitted the three main lineages were the Lineage of the Profound Action transmitted by Asaṅga and Vasubandhu, the Lineage of Profound View transmitted by Nagarjuna and Candrakīrti, and the Lineage of Profound Experience transmitted by Tilopa and Naropa. It is said that Atiśa had more than 150 teachers, but one key one was Dharmakīrtiśrī. Another notable teacher of his during his time at Vikramashila was Ratnākaraśānti. Tibetan sources assert that Atiśa spent 12 years in Sumatra of the Srivijaya empire and he returned to India in 1025 CE which was also the same year when Rajendra Chola I of the Chola dynasty invaded Sumatra. Atiśa returned to India. Once back, the increasingly knowledgeable monk received much attention for his teachings and skills in debate and philosophy. On three separate occasions, the monk Atiśa was acclaimed for defeating non-Buddhist extremists in debate. When he came into contact with what he perceived to be a misled or deteriorating form of Buddhism he would quickly and effectively implement reforms. Soon enough he was appointed to the position of steward, or abbot, at Vikramashila which was established by Emperor Dharmapala. He is also said to have "nourished" Odantapuri. Atiśa's return from Suvarnabhumi, where he had been studying with Dharmakīrtiśrī, and his rise to prominence in India coincided with a flourishing of Buddhist culture and the practice of Buddhism in the region, and in many ways Atiśa's influence contributed to these developments. According to traditional narratives, King Langdarma had suppressed Buddhism's teachings and persecuted its followers for over seventy years. According to the Blue Annals, a new king of Guge by the name of Yeshe-Ö sent his academic followers to learn and translate some of the Sanskrit Buddhist texts. Among these academics was Naktso, who was eventually sent to Vikramashila to study Sanskrit and plead with Atiśa to come teach the Dharma in his homeland. Travelling with Naktso and Gya Lōtsawa, Atiśa journeyed through Nepal on his way to Tolung, the capital of the Purang Kingdom. (Gya Lōtsawa died before reaching Tolung.) On his way, he is said to have met Marpa Lōtsawa. He spent three years in Tolung and compiled his teachings into his most influential scholarly work, Bodhipathapradīpa, or Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment. The short text, in sixty-seven verses, lays out the entire Buddhist path in terms of the three vehicles: Hīnayāna, Mahāyāna, and Vajrayāna, and became the model for subsequent texts in the genre of Lamrim (lam rim), or the Stages of the Path, and was specifically the basis for Tsongkhapa's Lamrim writings. Here Atiśa met Dromtön, or Dromtonpa, who would become his primary disciple, regarded as both an enforcer of later propagation ethical standards and a holder of Atiśa's tantric lineage. According to Jamgon Kongtrul, when Atiśa discovered the store of Sanskrit texts at Pekar Kordzoling, the library of Samye, "he said that the degree to which the Vajrayana had spread in Tibet was unparalleled, even in India. After saying this, he reverently folded his hands and praised the great dharma kings, translators, and panditas of the previous centuries." His books include: Bodhipathapradīpa (Wylie: byang chub lam gyi sgron ma) Bodhipathapradipapanjikanama (his own commentary of Wylie: byang chub lam gyi sgron ma) Charyasamgrahapradipa contains some kirtan verses composed by Atiśa. Bodhidharma actually preached Advaita which was kind of the mainstream religion during his time around his area, and especially Kancheepura. Zen which is a Japanese word comes from Chinese Chan which in turn comes from Sanskrit Dhyana. His Advatic system of one pointed consciousness and his later conversion to Buddhism in North India created a new meditative practise and philosohy. This is what later became Chan / Zen after borrowing influences from Chinese Tao and other philosophies.

And hindu society contains many schools of thought. But Britishers did social subversion with Ideological Subversion and congress continued it😢.so they distorted all real meanings of word even the word "Dharma" means (responsibility,duty, Righteousness) not religion!!

@@meenapandey1473It has all rights to be called a religion on its own as it's very different from other schools of thought. And stop spreading this fake propaganda of 'unity/respect among various schools' in ancient India. There were very big clashes among various schools in ancient India. Vaishnavism and Shaivism literally fought. There is a long history of Vaishnavism and Shaivism clash in Tamil Nadu. They did not even consider each other as equals, and thought of each other to be of a different caste. Shaivist kings from Bengal also ordered invasion on Buddhists schools like the great Nalanda (wayy before the Arabic invasion). The attack on Nalanda by Bengali Shaivite kings was one of the main reasons for the decline of Buddhism in India.

@@whoops0 Saying pallavas are tamil kings is like claiming Cholas as Telugu kings who ruled tamil nadu 😂. Bruh! Pallavas are feudatories of Andhra Satavahanas literally hailing from Andhra. Just because renati cholas learn Telugu & patronize Telugu doesn't mean they are Telugus just like pallavas patronized tamil doesn't mean they are tamils. There's no where it's stated that they are tamils except you tamils fake claiming them into your account. Even bodhidharma ancestry is of Telugu just like Karunanidhi & mk Stalin.

@@pokemonitishere202 First let me give you a map of Tamil speaking region of ancient times. Tholkaapiam, the 3rd sangam(300-500 BCE) literature grammar text says "Vadavengadam thenkumari ayidai Tamil koorum nallulagam" - meaning "Venkatahills in the North and Kumari in the South, are Tamil speaking region". And this territory is still consistent up until 13th century. Proof: Nannul: Gunakkadal(eastern sea), kumari, Kudagam(western sea), Vengadam(venkateshwara hills) enumnaangellaiyinirundh(the four directional territory has) Thamil kadal(the Tamil ocean). If you look carefully the Tamil speaking territory was consistent all the way from sangam age up untill the 13th century as per proofs. And now coming to the another sangam literature, Manimegalai(Contemporary to pallava dynasty). It tells a story where a Chola prince Ilandhiriyan, son of a Killivalavan a chola king. Killivalavan begot Ilandhiriyan marrying a Naga Queen, Pillivalai, daughter of Naga king Valaivanan of Manipallavam, a region in srilanka. This Ilandhiriyan is regarded as founder of Pallava dynasty. Who ruled the ancient Andhra and Thondai region of Thamilagam. Most of the characters in Manimegalai are Buddhist,and coincidentally Pallavas kings after Bodhidharman favoured and also spread budhism down till Srilanka. I can't say that Manimegalai is a cooked up story. It is a real life incident. This proof is more than enough to say that Pallavas have Tamil genealogy. Sanskrit or prakrit both has well differentiated scripts comparing to Tamil. According to you theory if Pallavas are telugus, using Sanskrit or telugu scripts are more easier and useful, but why did they use Tamil instead, especially the middle and the later pallavas. Simply because Tamil was Lingua franca there. Why didn't the early pallavas use Telugu scripts instead of Sanskrit/prakrit scripts. Oh wait, there was no telugu scripts at that time. If you are going to deny it proove it. Even pallavas architecture also resembles Tamil culture. I can't leave this without mentioning Mallapuram that's in Tamil Nadu, a pallavas architecture who used Tamil scripts. Yes, Pallavas served feudatories of Satavahanas and rose after satavahana's declined, but that doesn't make them Telugus. Pallava is sanskrit mean (Creeper/Branch). Pallava in Tamil means (Sprout/Branch). On overall Pallava means "Branch", and no one can deny this. Now, Pallava means Branch, but Branch of what? There are Branch of no one but of Cholas. There are many branches of Chola dynasty; Renati Cholas, Chalukya Cholas, Cholas of Srilanka, there were many branches of Cholas in Malaysia-Singapore conquest too. These are other branches of Cholas too who ruled various parts of Southern Indian subcontinent. Pallavas are one among the branches of Cholas with the patriarchal lineage with the mainland Cholas. In fact, Pallavas are earliest branch of Cholas considering there are contemporary with Manimegalai. With all these branches had their main branch in heart of Ancient Tamilagam. And coming to Bodhidharman. This person is again a Pallava prince. I already gave you enough proof that Pallavas are Tamils. And secondly, he was born in Kanchipuran, a region where Tamil is lingua franca of native people. And thirdly, he mastered Kalaripayittru, a Tamil martial art. Bodhidharman is belived to be the person who combined and improvised Silambam and Adimurai(both are Tamil martial art) into Kalaripayittru. Along with this, he also knows Varma Kalai, another Tamil art, that gives more importance to treating ailments by assessing pressure point. A prince in ancient Tamilagam os taught Aayakalaigal arubathinaangu in which those martial arts and medicine are one among them. He would definitely need a guru who teaches these stuffs that are origin to Tamil and it's culture. I as a gentle man placed my argument with proper proofs (MANIMEGALAI, THOLKAPIYAM, NANNU, MAAMALLAPURAM, VARIOUS ART FORMS, MEDICINE AND ARCHITECTURE, AND UNWAVERING PATRONIZATION OF TAMIL BY PALLAVAS, BRACHING FROM CHOLAS) And you on the other hand stated you argument with no supporting proof. And you are saying that we Tamils are fake claiming? Lol😂. Our belief regarding Pallavas are based on Ancient Literature pieces which are very consistent to the genealogy and cultural level. What are you telugus arguments based on? Insecurities? It is you guys who are fake claiming Pallavas and Bodhidharman as Telugu.

Zen is actually the Chinese pronounciation for DHYAN. Because *those people can't pronounce the Dh part in DHYAN* , They would call it ZEN *DHYAN means Meditation* and *DHYAN is The Sanskrit Hindi Word for Meditation Since At Least 5000 B.C*

Your absolutely correct. 💯 Zen Buddhism and Shaolin Kung Fu is not introduced by Bodhidharman. But it is influenced by bodhidharman. He introduced the basic vadivu(animal pause) techniques of kalaripayattu in Kerala. And the "marmma adi" pressure point kick to them. That's why Chinese people developed it into an advanced version. Only the thekkan kalari(souther kalaripayattu style ) is little bit similar to the kung fu. Because in Southern Kalaripayattu importance is given to the bare hand pressure point block punch & kick techniques, but in vadakkan kalaripayattu (northern kalaripayattu) importance is given to the weapons type. And Guru is little bit different. In Vadakkan kalaripayattu (northern style) mythologically load Parasuram is considered as the adi guru. But in thekkan kalaripayattu (southern style ) sage Agasthyar is considered as adi guru or Ashan. In my personal opinion Thekkan Kalari(southern ) which is practice in the southern 3 district of Kerala is much better than the whole other Kalaripayattu Sampridhayams. Thekkan Which is completely similar to the Adimurai Martial form of Thamizh Nadu that is still practice in the Kanyakumari district.

then why not praying mantis style exist in any style in indian martial arts? read "The "Book of the Lord of the Eastern Terrace" ,a text from the Han Dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE), mentions a form of martial arts called "Wushu" . The "Records of the Grand Historian" , a historical text from the Han Dynasty, mentions a military general named Zhang Liang who was skilled in martial arts and was known for his fighting techniques. The "Sancai Tuhui" , a book from the Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE), describes various forms of martial arts, including boxing, wrestling, and spear fighting. The "Wubei Zhi" , a book from the Song Dynasty (960-1279 CE), describes various forms of martial arts, including kung fu, that were practiced in the Wubei region of China.The "Jixiao Xi, a martial arts manual from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 CE), includes descriptions and illustrations of various fighting techniques, including hand-to-hand combat and weaponry. The "Bubishi" , a martial arts text from the late Ming or early Qing Dynasty (1644-1912 CE), includes descriptions and illustrations of various forms of martial arts, including kung fu and qigong. The "Xingyiquan Lu" , a martial arts manual from the Qing Dynasty, includes descriptions and illustrations of the Xingyiquan style of kung fu. The "Jiulong Benti" , a martial arts manual from the Qing Dynasty, includes descriptions and illustrations of the Jiulong Benti style of kung fu. These historical records and texts provide evidence that martial arts, including kung fu, were already practiced in China before the arrival of Buddhism and its influence on the development of martial arts.

Kanyakumari was separated from Keralam and merged with Tamilnadu in 1956 only. So it is not similar. It is Southern Kerala martial art that is practised in both Keralam and Kanyakumari. It's not a Tamilnadu martial art.

China already had their own style of kung fu before Bodhidharma came to China. But Bodhidharma did brought kung fu to another level due to his martial art skills! Different schools of Kung fu was later brought to Japan and Thailand which become Karate & Thai boxing. What the Chinese had discovered was the hardening of body parts by repeatedly hitting hard and calcified those parts like the hand knuckles and palm of Karate & the shin of Thai boxing. However, both Japan and Thailand had put their martial arts skill to very vigorous practical hand to hand combat and thus become what a powerful form of martial art it is today, while Kung Fu had become a demonstration sport, rather a martial art in China.
