That happened to me in my first saltwater tank. I had a porcupine puffer, a humu humu trigger, coral beauty and a large maroon clown. My son brought home this beautiful tang. He looked fine. He had velvet. He was dead within three days and the rest of my tank followed within a couple weeks. I worked day and night to save them and i was devastated. Never again.

I just bought a couple of clowns and didn't quarantine then as the shop keep said he did it for me. It's been 2 week they look very healthy. I’ve actually changed my opinion on that since this video. There’s meds now that are very mild and can save you a very long QT process if you were to see symptoms of disease in say, week 3 of QT. If you did that would now be day 1 of QT and meds.

When I add new fish to a tank and don't wait the 30 day quarantine. I put some melafix in the tank and feed the tank medicated food for three days. This can be expensive but if you use a quarter of the little spoon that comes with metroplex and 7-10 drops of garlic guard mix in with a daily feeding. If you feed twice a day put the entire days feeding in a little cup and mix. Let it dry for a bit. This is what I do for a sick fish also.
@KaveManAquatics2 жыл бұрын
I see how that would work as well but its still risky if the fish have something melafix wont cover. Also when you have tanks in the 100+ gallon range, yes it can get very expensive every time you get new fish.
@SG-Cichlids2 жыл бұрын
@KaveMan Aquatics I feel you on the hundred plus. I have 15 aquariums and 10 30 gallon totes. The majority of my tanks are a 100 plus. It adds up quick. I use the melafix because it's relatively cheap as a preventative but your right it won't help with some things. Best thing you can do is inspect the new fish for any soars or discolored spots when you get them and quarantine but if they look healthy it's worked for me so far. I should also add I don't do this every time I get a fish. It depends on where I get the fish and the condition of the fish.

Just did my first tank and it's a 125 cichlid tank. Bought 9 fish and put them in and ended up with an internal parasite in everyone pretty quick and I'm treating with metroplex. One fish developed something on the exterior and I only had my first tank for a week before I ended up buying a small tank to use as a hospital tank for the guy and treating with paraguard. I did your sponge filter trick to turnaround the hospital tank asap.

Sounds like your guys are in good hands! For metroplex use its best when mixed in the food together with focus and some garlic guard. The garlic will get them to eat the medicated food so it can go straight to the source. Heres a detailed video on it - kzbin.info/www/bejne/mITTc4iig5JroKs

@KaveManAquatics2 жыл бұрын
I've never had to do this myself, but many in the hobby recommend draining the tank and cleaning the inside with vinegar. Replace all the substrate and let decor sit and dry out for a few days. I live in Canada and Paraguard is NOT available here, it was taken off the shelves and you can't buy it anymore 😭 I recently had a sick fish and everyone in fish groups was recommending paraguard but I couldn't get it, not even on Amazon! I had to go to my local fish store that didn't have much options and they told me to put malachite green, it healed my fish but it then crashed my cycle and my fish died 😭 Is there any other product you can recommend!?

What should tank temperature be for quarantine?
@KaveManAquatics Жыл бұрын
Depends on your fish. But its the same temp you would keep them in your main tank.

Hi kev, iv got a question for you and could do with some advice? iv got a discus tank and I want to get some leopard frog plecos the problem is my discus fish eat every bit of food I put in even algae wafers. The poor plecos wouldn't stand a chance of getting bloodworms so my question is how do I feed plecos without the discus fish eating everything????
@KaveManAquatics2 жыл бұрын
Most people with plecos have this problem. One of the best solutions is to feed at night while its dark. More chances the food makes it to the bottom. Also, get the discuss used to feeding on 1 side of the tank and drop some food on other side for plecos...they'll learn 😉

Starting my first mbuna tank thanks to you (currently cycling)! I got a 10 gallon for my quarantine tank. Since I will add 4-5 mbunas at a time, is it okay to put 4/5 new mbunas in a small 10 gallon at 1 time or will they kill each other due to the small size?
@KaveManAquatics2 жыл бұрын
FOr quarantine time that will be fine. Since they're all new to that tank a boss wont emerge. But keep an eye on them. If they do begin to fight you may want to end the quarantine time early, if there arent any signs of disease.

Hi my black peacock was not eating at all since last few days and I noticed small scratch and slight rot on her body and fins . I quarantined her in a seperate place and using prime and stress guard for treatment also 10% water change. It's day two and she's eating a Lil bit more than yesterday. Am I doing it right or do I need to use paraguard and stability? She's been around more than a year with me.
@KaveManAquatics2 жыл бұрын
Stress guard alone will help to promote healing. You could also try adding some aquarium salt. Keep the water clean, water change every 2-3 days and he will heal up quickly.

Hey Kevin, I have a 10 gallon quarantine tank with 6 peacock chiclids for a week now and I noticed 2 of them are looking like they might have ick one is showing ick on him and the other one is rubbing his body all over with no ick on him do I treat the hole tank with medication..
@ger4422 жыл бұрын
You will see ick if your fish have it. If no white spots show up but they still show signs of flashing (rubbing) then its something internal most likely. Metroplex and Focus from seachem will deal with that. And instead of dosing the whole tank you just add the medicine to their food that they eat.
@KaveManAquatics2 жыл бұрын
Yes treat the whole tank, but for ich the best solution is to raise your temperature to about 86-87 degrees and the ich will fall off them. Once that happens be sure to do a very good substrate vacuum and water change.
@cheesehead46702 жыл бұрын
Kev, what meds would you use for cloudy eyes? I’m getting so many different opinions, some telling me use metroplex. I would trust your opinion over anyone else! Thanks. Ps, the baby flowerhorn looks amazing!!! 🥰
@ger4422 жыл бұрын
Melafix and primafix. Sometimes it's just water conditions that help clear up those cloudy eyes. I was quarantining a new fish I had bought that had cloudy eye but the tank I had him in wasn't all that up to date with maintenance like my main tank. As soon as I gave up on medicating him and put him into my main tank after 4 days the cloudy eye dissapeared.
@KaveManAquatics2 жыл бұрын
Metroplex is not a good choice for cloudy eyes, there are better alternatives like Paraguard, Melafix, or even water changes to keep your water clean.
@cheesehead46702 жыл бұрын
@@KaveManAquatics I’ve done the water changes. He had it when I put him in the tank. It was so small I didn’t realize it until he was in there. 😭 plus they’re so fast, it’s hard to keep an eye on it. 🤣 But I will do another WC and if that doesn’t help, add some melafix. Thanks, Kev!

I have a question. Can you speed quarantine time up by medicating? Like using general cure to get any potential diseases out and put ur fish in a lot sooner?
@KaveManAquatics2 жыл бұрын
No, if you choose to medicate they should still be in quarantine for at least the minimum amount of time. But you could always choose to take a risk and let them out sooner.

Is quarantine tank water tap or from established tank or combination of both?
@KaveManAquatics6 ай бұрын
Established tank water has no benefits. If you're using tap water to fill your established tank without adding any buffer to manipulate PH, then you can use the same Tap water to fill your quarantine 😁

Kev..I'm hoping you can help me..I had a 29 gal cycled tank everything was good but my filter stopped working it wouldn't start again no matter what so I ran out and bought a new one (fluval 50gal hob) I used media from old filter to try not to loose my bacteria however within a week all my fish started dieing..I tested my water and there was amonia but no nitrites ..no nitrates..so I did two water changes over next few days trying to get ammonia levels down..well I lost all 5 of my fish..uugh..but now I still have same readings ..a little ammonia..no nitrates..no nitrates for over 2weeks now! I can't get my tank to cycle again..it's testing out that there is some ammonia so there something for bacteria to eat..my oh was a little high but wen I done water changes it came down a bit..I don't think it's extremely to low or vise versa..any suggestions or thoughts? Help!

Is it a good idea to get all the fish from the same tank at a fish store?

Thats always better than the alternative...but really if a fish store has ich or another disease in 1 tank, it would easily spread to all tanks

Love the videos. I’m having a problem with one of my fish. I can’t quite figure out what he is sick wIth. mainly just one fish.. but as time goes on I think some are starting to show early signs of sickness. The original sick fish hasn’t eaten for about 4 weeks now I believe. I decided to dose the entire tank with the aquarium coop trio. I noticed ich x says to use ULTIMATE and that you cannot use prime.. which I’ve always used. And also dose with one dose for each medication for the week. I’m afraid dosing only once and not per the box instructions won’t actually resolve anything. How would you handle this?

I get that there are a number of factors involved and it might be a loaded question but does anyone have suggestions on how to nuke a tank/restart? Something wiped out more than half of my tank. Each one that died started to turn very white (not the fuzzy white stuff you’d see with ICH) and then a few days later they would sort of stop moving/eating, and then they would pass. Any help would really be appreciated.

Do you quarantine if they are the 1st fish being put in the tank
@KaveManAquatics10 ай бұрын
Great question. No. That first tank is essentially the quarantine tank. Medicate the tank with the QC and you'll be good. Future fish should be quarantined though 💪
@Berserk20992 жыл бұрын
My thing is every time you transfer a fish from one environment to another you stress the fish. If you buy new fish, transport them home, put them in temporary tank for a few weeks, then take them out again and then put them into permanent tank that means they’ve been in 3 different tanks and have been transported twice in a 1 month period. It just seems like a lot. I only quarantine when I absolutely have to. When I add new fish to tank I make sure to keep lights really low and make sure they have plenty of areas to hide. I’ll provide medication as well. I think this strategy works if you’re not adding new fish often. Now if you’re adding new fish all the time I would probably quarantine that way you’re not medicating your existing fish constantly
@MrShortzYT Жыл бұрын
Im the same, i buy all my fish from one store, and they quarantine all their stock before it goes on sale for 2 weeks minimum, so the quarentine process is essentially done already. As you say, the common cause of disease or sickness is to much stress and keep moving home to home Turn lights off, keep room dark if possible, acclimate And release Avoid feeding on 1st day if possible And you should be good to go, ive never lost or had any sick fish with this method and use of my trusted store for reasons mentioned. If i purchased elsewhere, i would quarantine, but i would only do a week as most medication cycles are only 7 days Anyway

Oscars can be moody and act weird sometimes. As long as he keeps eating and no physical signs of disease no need to medicate. But 1 dose of Seachem Paraguard wont hurt either. 😊

Does it stress a fish to take him out of one tank and put him into another? What they call a "plop and drop", I think. Assuming the temp and parameters are the same and the fish is healthy, that is. Like, if I take one out of my 55 and add him to my 125. Does that cause stress? If so, what's the best way to do that?
@KaveManAquatics2 жыл бұрын
Every time you handle a fish it causes some kind of stress for them. But if you have to move a fish you have to do it. Just be cautious and careful when you do it.
