Thanks for the articulate analysis. This is a stunningly well-crafted film. It's categorized as a "who done it" but while the mystery is what propels the action, it's really first and foremost a biting satire on the nature of Hollywood personalities, where the scriptwriters clearly feel there are no interpersonal relationships that aren't financial/transactional .... which is why the closing music of "Friends" is so perfectly apt.

Love all things “The Last of Sheila.” I saw this in 1973 when it first came out as a high school senior. Great cast! I have watched this many, many times. This should have been a HUGE hit.

I really can't think of why it did not do better... except that perhaps someone other than Richard Benjamin should have played the writer. He's not bad, but the others are class A scene stealers!

One of my all time favorite murder mysteries. Great story and cast. I have the DVD and watched it many, many times.

The haunting background music and sound were such an important element in the effectiveness of this film. It contributes to the 'uncanny' of the thriller, and totally draws the viewer into the drama unfolding. Brilliant movie.

The movie was released in 1973. The Roman Polanski “scandal” was in 1978.

On the dvd commentary, Dyan Cannon says that she was represented by Sue Mengers at the time and Mengers called her up to tell her about the script and "you have to do it, darling, it's me!" So apparently Sue Mengers was exactly the way she was portrayed in this movie.

I think that you missed the super subtle irony in Richard Benjamin’s performance. I think that he was great in this film.

Shelia didn’t die in a “freak accident”. It was a “Hit and Run”.

The movie is probably the most fairest play mystery I know, it has a ton of clues and the reveal is made pretty well
