The best thing about SWOTL, BOB, AOE, AOTP, and EAW etc Are the dynamic campaigns and the role playing aspects like getting promotions, medals and such. IL2 would be the only sim today that has at least some of these features. DCS etc are more single mission type deals not full on wars. Larry Holland, Microprose and other early flight sim devs made much more immersive flight sims that are sadly not done anymore. All we have nowadays are either toxic filled PVP FPS's or MMO's and tons of 3rd person games. Consoles ruined the the days of the 1st person simulators if not for DCS, IL2, Steel Beasts Pro, ARMA, XPlane, MSFS and a few small developers. There would be no sims left. 3rd person cosmetics ruined gaming now everything is microtractions for stupid trinkets, skins, weapons and other worthless stuff that you can only see in 3rd person. Pardon the rant.
