KLR is always the right answer. It's probably the most cost effective and versatile dual sport available.

Attention to anyone looking to buy a big bore: Look into this KLR650, the DRZ400S and the DR650...but don't forget about the XR's! The XR650L, XR600R and all the smaller XR's are great first-bike choices in regards to ruggedness and reliability.

Own the KLR650 for Adventure and the KLR250 for single track. Less than $2500 invested total. With a KTM1190 or BMW R1200GS that money wont cover the repairs when you lay it down. Not even sure if it would cover the Gold Plated Oil Change and scheduled maintenance at the BMW Dealer? Yes, there are better bikes out there but....KLR = Adventure Biking for the Average Joe without screwing up the family budget.

Well my wife and I both ride the DR650 because we like it better with no fairing and the added ability off road. Picked up both bikes for under $2100 each and the rest is history. That's basically when we started following you and have been along for the ride ever since 😀 No matter what you ride as long as it has 2 wheels it will move your soul and keep your spirits high! Best anti depressant we know of. Thanks Tyler for your contribution to this amazing community!

Oh man. I was following Tyler all this time because I thought my bike was a KLR650 too! But I just looked at my oil filter cover and it says 'suzuki'. Oh man, my life has just turned upside down!

Woah, I got the chance to respond to Cross Training's comment! I own an 87 KLR 650 and I must say that it lifts the front end up in the air pretty easily. It can even power wheelie in 3rd gear but you need to be standing and really pull with your whole body, as you are teaching. Though, halfway through writing this I realised that your comment was probably ironical as I know how much you like the DR! Jumping that pig on the track and landing it without the bike coming apart got me really impressed! Ride on! Kind regards from Serbia

This was one of the main videos that helped me make the decision for a KLR, over all the rest of the motorcycles out there. I have had it for 3 years now. It has been amazing on the road. I am just now getting as good as these riders in this video, off road. And I just finished an hour and a half ride in 50 degree rain and it did great there too. I was suffering, but the bike did amazing, from 10mph on the trails, and 75mph on the highway home in the rain. In case this helps any of your viewers, (because these were the questions I had, 3 years ago): I am 39years old. I drove a harley for 11 years and this was my first off road bike ever. I am 6 ft and was 285lbs and now 225lbs It handled me while I was fat and now... that I am.... not as fat. That includes highway speed and tight trails. I put a 12 dollar Plano box on the back and still love it. The only upgrade I have made is the KLR Dash and it is amazing on the highway and looks awesome everywhere. I use the RAM phone mounts and it has never dropped my phone. I have dropped my bike 4 to 6 times (off road) and my phone has never moved I get 38mpg at 70mph which is about 5000 to 5300rpms I get 45 to 48 mpg if I am in 5th and going 55mph for long periods of time I just fill up before 200 miles on the tank and have never run out of gas. The stock rear tire sucked on and off road. It had no traction off road, and it wore down very fast in the first year of driving. I upgraded to a Mitas E-07 130/80B17 for the rear Anakeeroad. I can do everything in this video and they still look new after 2 years of driving on both of them. I look forward to getting some panniers but am scared that I am going to get them caught on a tree or stump while trail riding so haven't done it yet. I hope this helps someone out there. This video helped me and I would love to know I helped the guy that helped me find a dream motorcycle for myself and my family. My wife ended up getting a DR650 after I got this and I owe it all to Everide ADV, and (Swanky Cat.) Thanks so much! Looking forward to seeing your racing drone videos! ps: the DR650 is more powerful on the trails and will smoke my bike all day, but it is very wobbly in the back end at highway speeds. There is no windshield that suits it and I feel it looks better off road than on. It is an amazing bike but it is not as good all around as the KLR. But if you are serious about the DR650 it still handled me at my height and weights over the 3 years she has owned it. I feel as though I fit better "inside" the KLR where I felt as though I was more "on top" of the DR650. So where that is a downfall on the road it is a plus off road because it's center of gravity is much lower and way easier to wield as your skills improve. Well this got a little winded. Thanks again!

I love my KLR. i love that it is absolutely mediocre. I got it for under $2000 and have put more then 30,000 km on it and its still running. I've never had a problem blasting down the highway or hitting off roads. yeah its not ideal for crazy high climbs but it will crawl around well enough.

You're thinking of buying a KLR? well, you've already wasted too much time considering it! BUY ONE RIGHT NOW!! Everide's review of the KLR not only inspired me to buy one, but I had never ridden anything at all before! So, solely based on Tyler's sheer passion for this bike, and his amazing looking video, I went out and bought a motorbike, had it delivered, then spent a weekend learning how to ride it. and now, with more than 20 000kms on the clock, I still get the same thrill hearing that big heavy engine idle that I got the first time I heard it. Lets see...uh...hmm... something bad about this bike would be...uh... that it doesnt have a fuel gauge? or...um... that you have to remember to check the oil? pfft!! Who am I kidding!? I love my big gorgeous boy! Hurry up and buy one before you waste more time thinking about it and lose precious riding time!

I have the 2014NE and my buddy has a 2013 in the suspension there is a huge difference. Anything on the 2014 and up the front forks have a 40% stiffer springs and 27% firmer rebound. And on my rear (even loaded down with camping gear) I have never bottomed out. The new is 63% stiffer spring and 83% firmer rebound. What I am getting at is the newer ones you really dont have to do anything with the suspension. - Great Video - Long Live the KLR650

KLR 650 is an OK bike. Its a do anything bike. Problem is, it doesn't do any one thing all that good. On road it feels like lacking power, Off road it has FAR TOO much to handle simple trails. Odd bike in my opinion. Very reliable but wont buy one again.

The only thing that's not good on the KLR is how damn heavy it is. But I totally agree that it's forcing me to be a better rider while learning because I seriously do not want to try to pick the fucker up (which I literally cannot do). The thing is super easy to work on, cheap and reliable. Other than it tending to run warm at lower speeds I have so much fun riding it around town. People think they're ugly pigs, but I think it's beautiful, lol. (Gen 1 KLRs are beautiful, I HATE the Ninja fairings on the gen 2)

I bought my 2015 -KLR because of Tyler's "I hate the KLR" video and have fallen in deeeep thumpy love. I live in the Houston, TX area in which there is ZERO real off-road action, BUT, as a commuter and tour-er this bike has given me everything i could ever ask of it and then some. It takes me and the girlfriend anywhere we want to go and after a couple comfort modifications it recently took me on my first 1000 mile camping road trip. I cant say this is the last bike ill ever own but I can say this is the first bike I've ever really LOVED owning. I've owned, in order, Rebel250 - Shadow1100 - Ninja250 - SV650 - KLR650.

Long distances and reliability is what attracts me to this bike. Yeah you can buy a better bike with a much larger price tag but I'd rather drop a KLR than an expensive adventure rig. I can afford to fix it and it'll get me home.

I've ridden and owned all that you have mentioned and agree with everything you've said as always. Biggest difference between DR650 and KLR 650 from what I have noticed.. ( stock ) KLR 650 - more wind protection, better range, better seat, the famous KLR chug DR650 - It can wheelie, lower center of gravity , a bit lighter and more flickable ( and easier to pick up ) , aimed more at offroad (it's a bush pig though ).. To sum it up : KLR 650 = 60/40 on/off , DR650 = 50/50 on/off.. What I own now? DR650 with a big bore stroker kit. If you plan to use your bike as a adventure bike ( long trips, etc ) bike I'd get a KLR ( that fairing, big stock tank, and wide poofy seat are nice ) You cannot lose by going either way. As far as the DRZ400 goes, I love mine, it will never leave my garage ( except to get dirty )

The KLR is kinda like the jeep Cherokee of the motorcycle world. It's reliable, affordable, has great after market support, and it can technically do anything. It's just not amazing at anything it does. Thankful it doesn't need to be amazing at one thing to be amazing overall.

Hey y’all. Anyone have trouble with a pop or backfire after letting off the gas? Saw in a different KLR vid comment section that the nuts on the exhaust at the head can come loose. Checked. I had one missing. Fixed that.

The KLR is a hands down great bike. I've seen KLR's do things I had no idea they could do here on Colorado trails. While personally it's not "my style" I still have lots of respect for them and their owners. Also, after riding yours I know why they buy them.

Nice video man! I have never ridden a KLR myself, but I have seen first hand at what they are capable of. My latest video on my channel is a preview of a ride I did with a few guys on KLR's and we did a 300 mile round trip from the desert of Southern California up into the mountains, down the other side and then back again. Good information man. I put 230ish miles on the DRZ on a ride. The stock 400e gearing got a bit buzzy on the long sections but up in the mountains it was fantastic. I got that itch for a bike that is capable off road and on road that I could really rack up some miles....like 1k in a weekend and not feel numb from engine vibration on Monday when I get back to work. I feel a bigger adv bike is coming to my channel!

The KLR is a super fun bike, I Love it, and So is the DRZ, I really love that bike as well. I so agree, locations that a person lives is a bigger help on deciding, just like you talked about recently in one of your videos, a lot of us end up being weekend warriors more so than overland or round the world travelers, so knowing how far you have to ride to get to dirt, may make a difference between a lot of the bikes. Your voice sounds similar to Fort Nine. You both have great presentation production, video aspects are spot on & VERY informative without an obnoxious musical overture. Just right. I have a KLR 650 (I know...so what) but I've made it more of a street commuter than off-road. Would love to see how it handles with knobbies instead of my street tires.

klr owner and this info is spot on, my only issue is weight in the dirt, however weight on road is good, so in a nut shell the klr is a compromise no matter where you ride it.

Question: I have a CR 250 which I enjoy riding in the desert and the woods (Phoenix and Northern AZ). I'm thinking about a KLR because I would have something dual purpose, but what's the transition from the CR to the KLR in the dirt and rocks going to be like? Also, I'm looking at a 2008, 8k miles, $3200. Is that too much? The bike appears to be in excellent condition.

nice drone work on the vid (apart from the low exposure shots mixed in). the klr is so ugly though and sooo heavy. still loving the klx330 (bored out and with replacment aftermarket performance ecu... and 2 sets or rims... it really does everything and takes me everywhere from super knarly single track dirt day trips to 1 month dual sport adveture trips to tight on toad twisties in the mountains nearby)

Nothing is perfect for everything dual sport. Tight single track rewards smaller, lighter but beats you up on the tarmac. I'm testing out a 2003 KTM 640 ADV which has its own shortcomings (maintenance intervals, buzzy engine) but supposed to be a very worthy light-mid weight ADV rig. We'll see. 93,500+ mi. on my 2nd KLR650 with no major issues. I can explore without worries. The cheaper I keep it the sooner I can retire and continue to expand my range. I'm considering a larger ADV bike for long hauls but I'll always have a KLR in the stall. Just too fun.

I'm 6'5" and 350, I ride a 2004 KLR650 both on and off road. It handles pretty much everything with aplomb. I put a 16 tooth front sprocket so It can run 80-85 just fine. I put a MOAB suspension under it so it can handle my fat a**, paniers, and even my wife, with no problem. I have ridden single track on it, not as fun as a small bike, but handled it just fine. And with the Cogent Dynamics MOAB, I can even put it in the air a bit with no problem. Great all around bike and I could roll it off the roof and it'll still run.

I bought an '06 KLR with only 3200 miles a couple of years ago. It was completely stock and I began to farkle it. I sold it last Sept. and bought an AT. I have 2 questions: Why does Kawasaki refuse to acknowledge the oil consumption problem AND why should I have to replace the cam chain tensioner on a brand new bike? Kawasaki has demonstrated their lack of attention to detail. I find the KLR fairly unreliable at best unless you are willing to put time and money into it. I also disagree that it is acceptable at highway speeds. Stay safe and good luck with your adventures!

The KLR is great.... Until the bike falls on a bad incline and no one is there but you to have to pick it up. I live in Northern Utah, not the desert landscapes of southern Utah like is shown in this video.I sold my KLR and got me a lighter dual sport and have never looked back. Lots of fun riding up and and down the northern mountains of Utah.

I have an 08 with a stage 2 dyno jet kit and I opened up the airbox. Added a lexx slip on and a 16tooth front sprocket. This combination really woke up the big girl! Also added progressive fork springs. 30,000 miles later this bike has been as reliable as a hammer! I love my klr

I appreciate your your channel and your videos! I just bought a KLR and am new dual sports/adventure riding (though I've ridden motorcycles and mountain bikes for years, figure I'm just combining 2 of my favorite hobbies). I'm not exactly mechanically inclined but am realizing that not having the ability to some basic fixes might be big trouble if I'm out in the middle of nowhere. Can you tell me what are the top most-likely problems I might encounter in the back country?

Don't get me wrong, I love the BMW gs bikes and the new Honda Africa twin. But my bike was 1600 gently used and has about 1500 in after market parts I've put on it. cheap to own and has never let me down on trails or otherwise. I'll upgrade when I can afford it. But I'm in no hurry.

Alright now lets see the Isuzu do a hill climb! :) Personally I am more of a DR650 guy vs the KLR. I'd be happy to see more footage of them if you get the opportunity.

Excellent and entertaining vid Tyler - as per usual. You are so correct (and I have read more than a few say the same thing) - the KLR makes you a better dirt rider - for exactly those reasons you mentioned. ( plus a few others when you're an old feller like me :) ) Riding the stock tyres and trying to get through every type of terrain sure teaches you bike control !! I'm sure a lot of aspiring KLR650 riders get themselves into trouble by trying to turn the bike into something it's not meant to be/do; and then unjustly label it a POS. Hope you are learning to manage your health issue mate. Been a long time sufferer myself - you can't fix it - but you can learn to manage and live with it. Whenever your feeling down, remember this - there are literally billions who don't even know where their next meal or drink of fresh water is coming from; or whether they will be shot, murdered, tortured or unjustly persecuted !!!! thank you for continuing to entertain the (KLR650) troops be good cheers from Australia George

Loved my KLR! First bike and great for learning! Replaced it with a Vstrom 1000 for my wife and I, much more comfortable. If I lived closer to trails I probably wouldn't have replaced it. Love the Vstrom, already created AMAZING memories 2-up and that's what really matters.

Well thought out video there Tyman. I got my KLR new in 07, and 33k miles latter it is still my go to bike. I ride single track trails up American fork canyon, and have done multi day 2400 mile trips down the west coast all on the same bike. Still makes smile every time I throw a leg over the ole KLR.

best bike ever , the most under rated , the swiss army knife of bikes,ive done nearly 50000kms on my 2015, everything from hwy commuting to bush ,rainforests,and exploring the back country dirt roads, never failed me

Hey! What about the wee-strom? Not a single mention? You tested it a while back and you liked it...a lot! Ok so it's nowhere near the capable KLR but you have to consider it.

I bought a 2012 klr with 7 thousand miles on it cost me four grand I didn’t want an expensive bike where I would cry my eyes out if I put a scratch on it the klr is a working mans bike it may not be for the BMW Starbucks crowd but to each his own.

Not sure why you didn't mention the XR650L. It is much more dirt oriented than the DR650 at the same cost. Far superior suspension from factory from what I have heard.

As much as I love my 2011 KLR I disagree that they are good bikes for beginners, far too large and top heavy. The stock brakes and suspension are marginal and I have modded mine to great benefit.

Love my KLR. Ride her to work everyday I can. 20 to 100 miles for work and great for playing on the weekend. She's ugly to some but a beauty to me!

When I was first looking at getting a motorcycle it was a close competition between the klr650 and the drz400. I'm very glad that I chose the drz because I value off road performance more then on road. Both are great bikes for sure

what about a used ktm 950, it weighs about the same as a klr. The only negative being its fuel mileage, it gets about 35-38 mpg but does have pretty large 5.8 gal tank.

First determine the style of riding you wish to do, then select a bike based on that. For me it meant a klr 👍🏼 Good video +++

Dirt bike magazine recently said some "hardcore" dual sports are being tested in Japan right now and we might see some before the end of this year. It would be nice if there were more variety to choose from .
