I own both the CRF300L and an older '07 KLR. Complaints about carbs notwithstanding, the only advantage the KLR has over the CRF is its ability to haul more stuff (that you don't need) and be more competent on the interstate. I will be honest and say the only reason why I haven't sold my KLR is because it has an emotional connection to me. First dual sport, first bike I took big trips on, gave me happiness when I was having bad times. The CRF is better in every other category, and let's be honest, we buy dual sports to do hooligan shit off-road with. You're not going to enjoy interstate on either bike. Just get the bike that is more fun off-road and on twisty roads.

Weirdly different but kind of the same with the mid size cruiser category. I got the Sportster S but am reluctant to part with my Triumph America due to the luggage and pack rack. Or just buy a trailer. I don't understand why people think a duel sport must do well on the highway. Even if it did, who wants to ride a motorcycle home after a day of off road riding? It is miserable. Much better to put it on a trailer and ride home in a nice air conditioned car.

If you go up to 450cc only to get it better on the highway… you are doing it wrong. As spite sad… Don't get a dirt-bike that is doing it best on the highway. You are not going to enjoy any off them on the highway. And why do you have to go so fast, that is what kills lots of people on bikes every year. And you in the US is like… if it only goes faster i will survive on the highway… No, that will kill you… It will only be more heavy, and if you have almost no skill… It is going to be much harder to handle. And not any better on the highway.

Yup dr650 is the 50/50 bike. It is however a bit heavy for anything moderate-hard difficulty off road, and hence I switched to a dr350 which is much more offroad capable and doesn't have me worried as much about being stranded stuck under a bike. The dr650 does however have the perfect amount of power with a dyno jet kit and air box mod. Enough to be really fun but not enough that you are going to kill yourself on it. It can also cruise on the hwy all day (assuming your butt can withstand it).

Having done almost every trail in Colorado gotta say the KLR is just darn right reliable and capable. Just love that it does highway so much better than others in its price range(at least for the older bikes all you T700 fans). After doing black bear pass with the KTM 525, Honda XR650L, DRZ400, and KLR650 I would go with the XR650 for the heavy off road. KTM had issues boiling the carb at high altitude after long days of riding. DRZ just struggled a little more on the power side but any experienced rider knows to keep your momentum and revs up. KLR gets through everything but some of the drops off the boulders are a lot for the stock suspension reason I finally upgraded to progressive springs. Hope one day to have a Pan America or Africa twin.

For a dirt road that's as flat as a paved road like what y'all did, the KLR is definitely more chill. But that's a suspension and tire fix away for the CRF, and once things get hairy the CRF is the only one of the two you'd even want to TRY and get through with. When roads stop being roads, ADV bikes no longer can adventure.
@jediknight129
@jediknight129 2 жыл бұрын
eh It depends how you set it up to be honest and where you ride. in places like Wales or the desert the weight carrying ability of a setup adventure bike is incredible and the difference between it and the crf isn't massive in the forests and valleys or the dunes. on motocross tracks and the offroad parks I'd rather have the CRF, for all day off road covering distance I'd take the KLR. I'd much rather do a Dakar style day after day off road ride on the Kilrea than the crf. if you're talking g tyre, wheel and suspension changes and setting up a bike to you that's a different thing entirely to just getting on a bike and going.

Dual sports are a great choice to try a bit of every type of riding. I'm glad that neither Whitney or Spite put their phones on that mount on the 300L because it can break the stabilizer in your phone's camera (speaking from experience with that same bike and phone mount). Any insight if / when Rokform plans to make a vibration dampener attachment? I chose Rockform over Quadlock initially because of the styling and Rokform's case is actually drop tested, but probably need to switch to Quadlock when riding a thumper.

Inversely, I find the CRF waaaayyyy more enjoyable off-road than either the X or the KLR by a long shot. I don't even consider the KLR and CRF in the same category of motorcycle. The CRF is far less comfortable on the interstate, but real talk, who rides a dual sport for the interstate performance? The Suzuki 400, either the S or SM, has considerably more passing power at highway speeds than the Honda or Kawasaki 300’s do, which is why I’d argue it’s better on highways. Cruising at 65, it still has enough grunt, even in 5th gear, to easily and quickly get up to 75 or 80 to pass a car or semi. But all of the dirt bike-derived motorcycles are definitely not what I’d call optimal for highway travel either way.

Well, I've had a klr & 300l rally (a better apples to apples than your standard 300l). 300 is great klr is not good on or off road. Oh, and the suspension isn't as bad as they make it sound on the 300. I'm 230 lbs and over 6' riding stock suspension and it works but sure it's a little soft but not bottoming out as much as my klr did even like that. I tried aftermarket seats and all on the klr and it was never comfy for any period of time over 30 min. The 300 doesn't feel any better when I first get on it but it doesn't seem to hardly get uncomfortable either. KLR was also harder to pick up than my gl1800. No problem picking up the 300. I'm not sure if the klr is much faster or not but on a trail or back road it's so heavy it'll never keep up. Klr isn't great top end either but sure it's better power wise on the pavement. Plus I get like 80 mpg on the 300 and has plenty of power unless you're hitting freeways regularly. There is NO way I'd go back to a klr.

Hence, the CRF is way more desirable to me as someone who wants to get off road with my dual sport more than tour roads.

Why are you standing up off road? No wonder you can’t control her on the trails. Get yourself a crf450r and rip her on those trails. You want to feel the rear end skidding side to side when you accelerate. Send ruts out and throw it in third while the front end is straight up. Com-on man.

The klr has about 35% more hp than the crf. The crf vs klr comparisons are only ever done by people looking to make the klr look someone competent. 300cc vs 650cc, almost $1k difference in cost. The crf is punching above it's weight in every category and still is a better bike.

Looked at both these bikes when earlier this year when I was looking for a bike to get back into the trails. The klr was just too heavy and I didn’t think the suspension would be up to what I wanted to do. The crf was lighter but I felt that it wouldn’t have enough power to keep me interested for long. I chose to get a ktm 690 enduro r and have no regrets. It has great suspension. It’s 100+ pounds lighter than the klr. It has 70 horsepower which is awesome on a bike that weighs just a little more than the crf. Highway speeds are where it shows it limitations though but off-road and around town it’s great 👍. If the 690 was just a little bit more stable at 70+ mph it would be my unicorn

I got a Lifan Xpect as a spare for gf and buddies to ride with me on my KLR, and I actually love that little 285 lb. 14 hp. thing on the trails. Super smooth trany, and so quiet with very little vibe. It tops out at 55 mph, and actually cruises comfortable at 50 mph. So it’s an in town or trail bike. No big roads for it. Quite impressed with the build quality as well. Great to use on steep sharp rock trails. It will climb a tree with it’s gearing. I live in the Rockies, and my ranch has steep mtn roads. So I use the Lifan to chase cows with over the KLR now.

I'm not going to look it up but are these the cheapest new bikes? Because there are countless cheaper used bikes and arguably better. I have a KLR 650, but it's too tall for me. My XT225 does everything I need and the Rally version of that CRF is good enough to go globe trotting.

I bought a dr650 as my first street bike, because i grew up on dirt bikes. six years later I bought a Honda fury, and realized I'd been torturing myself on the highway. The fury feels like a Cadillac at 80 mph, the 320 lb DR650 feels like a Rollercoaster...a cross wind can literally push you right off the road. They are not pleasant for long road trips. Around town they're great though.
