Adding a couple things for Spite's bulletpoints: An ADV bike is better for urban commuting for 2 additional reasons: 1. Suspension travel. With our "crumbling infrastructure" the size of potholes, construction zones, speed bumps, and sunken manholes make potential bent rims a possibility and that long suspension travel more of a need-to-have rather than nice-to-have. 2. Visibility. That taller bike gives you a warhorse-like view of the battlefield which is more beneficial than you realize in heavy traffic. On cruisers and most nekkid bikes you pretty much just see the car in front of you. But on ADVs sitting tall and proud you can see over several cars. The flip side is also true. Being able to pull up along side Kyle or Chad and look them in the eye in their clapped out rolling-coal Dodge Cummins cranking 5FDP means they're more likely to see YOU as well. Basically, urban landscapes ARE the very definition of ADV riding these days.

"We don't think it's worth owning, but for a beginner or most people, it's worth it" this right here folks - if someone says your bike isn't worth it because something is better, just ask yourself "am I enjoying it/does it make me happy" if you can say yes, then hello, my two wheeled friend, ride on and ride safe!

The same applies to cars. A lot of my circle of family/friends know I’m into cars and bikes and know how much I hate SUVs and most modern cars which focus too much in iPad style entertainment and not enough on driver input like cars from ‘yester-year’. Thing is they always seem to seek my approval when looking to get a new car to which point I always say…listen just because I don’t like it, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t meet what you want/need/like. I happily advise on features to look out for and what the acronyms mean etc..but then remind them it’s their cash, they’re the ones buying it and will be using it on a daily basis…so my opinion counts for sh*t …..you should see their faces 😂…but it’s true. Why copy /live someone else’s dream 🤷‍♂️

I watched the video and Yammie's arguments were weak sauce. Wheelies? Track days? 99.9% of people riding will never or rarely do either. I switched from Sport/Naked bikes to Adv bikes years ago. When you get a little older and knees/ backs and other injuries start rearing their ugly head, Adv start making a ton of sense if you don't want to go the land yacht route on a GoldWing. I still have a naked bike in the garage but, it rarely gets ridden. I've been riding over 50 years and the ADV bikes beats the other bikes hands down. KTM is releasing a 490 ADV at some point in the future, Covid slowed that down but, it'll be a game changer.

My 450l is my "toy", my vstrom 650 is my two wheeled car and I love it and don't care what people think. Best memory was throwing the luggage on to run errands and I see a yard sale at a farm. Walked away with a $25 framing nailer, three boxes of nails and it was enough to frame my entire basement for $25. Yay for nerdy ADV luggage capacity!

I think it’s important to be honest with yourself. I got an Africa Twin in 2017 with all sorts of plans of taking it off road and really adventure riding with it. 5 years of owning it and it never saw dirt. Ended up trading it in for a cruiser, still wanted a comfy bike but I was much more honest with where I was actually riding it.

I plan to move to road-adventure bike from naked, for 3 reasons: 1) Suspension better suits our roads 2) Wind protection (we often have strong wind, very uncomfortable on naked even 40+ mph) 3) More relaxed riding positon, better seat, better road view.

+ no1 can carry a passager for long distance travel. no2 can carry 2 FF helmets in top case for short distance travel. Visiting some place and not carring helmets in hands is a great thing no3 can carry paniers for long distance travel. Almost replace a car. You can actualy travel somwhere with somebody. I agree on suspensions, when you hit a bump you wish you have more suspension travel cons Top heavy, tall seat, harder to manuver from the stop, especialy when having a passager, and im saying that because in this bike you will have a passager. Which i recommand you not to get too big bike for your size, and trust me when stop in middle of traffic with that thing angeled you want to flat both of your feets.

I use both as a daily commuter. I use the naked when there's no traffic on the tarmac, Then jump off and onto my ADV bike when I have to go offroad. Once I see it clearing up, I get back on the naked bike! Best of both worlds. Now, I have to figure out how to add a full fairing bike to my commute when I need that wind protection and straight line speed! He nailed it at the 6:40 minute mark. I have a Ventura luggage rack on the top of my rear seat (KTM SuperDuke R) and that's all I need for the day! Lunch, Coffee, phone, wallet, keys, raingear, etc.) Don't see the point of side panniers. That'll just add bulk while lane filtering. If it's bulky and you need that much Stuff, you might as well drive a car and sit in traffic! My bike also has cruise control, heated seats/grips and phone charger. Only regreat is that this bike was not availble to me 25 years ago.

this truly is a why not both situation imo. I've had my Vstrom 650 for a couple years now and I love it. Panniers, heated grips, Corbin heated seat, etc make it the perfect commuter capable of going long distance. It's not fast though and since I'm not getting younger instead of a new zx6r I picked up a z900. I'd say though even after more than doubling the cost of the vstrom with accessories it's still cheaper than the z900 but not by much. After exhaust and sliders and such for the z900 it's probably 1-2k more. If I could only have one though ADV is the best all rounder.

wow this video was made for me 😂 my very first bike was the ktm 390 adv and I loved it. perfect bike to learn how to ride on and plenty capable. it did on road and off road good but not great. I traded it in for my current bike a brand new mt 07 and love it! significant increase in HP and street performance. I want to now save up and get a cheap used dirt bike or dual sport. IMO having a dedicated on road bike and dedicated off road bike or atv makes more sense than getting into the ADV game. Just my 2c! obviously depends a lot too on where you live, riding style, etc.

We don't care about his childish conception of aesthetics. I got my first motorcycle in 1978, a three cylinder two stroke Suzuki GT550. Then another motorcycle, then some cars and now a Suzuki SV650. You can't buy the motorcycle that you need. You buy the closest one and modify it. It's not a naked bike, it's not a an ADV. It's YOUR motorcycle.

I rode a naked bike when i was learning to drive. It was good, fun, and lightweight. The thing is that adv bikes are so much more agile. For the size of these bikes, they're very responsive. I feel much more comfortable doing slow speeds, slipping through traffic and slaloming through the traffic jams. Turn radius is insanely good, and while many naked sportbikes can do the same, it does not "feel" right. You can feel it was not purposely built for these thight maneuvers. The adv bike, however, gives you this good feeling of "i can do this" mindset.. sometimes for good or worse. AND adv bikes are comfy for the long trips as well, and the price can be half of what those touring bikes go for. Well, if you dont buy BMW 1250gs or ducati multistrada v4, then.

Both sides have great points for two very different commutes. If I had a city commute to an office job where I could show up with nothing but a coffee in hand, a naked bike would be ideal. Defining the commuter here is critical. I do archaeology fieldwork and my commute often turns into a dirt road down a poorly maintained powerline corridor, with overgrown sections and occasional sketchy water crossings. (My car looks like heck. ) I'm less concerned with fast corners and wheelies, and more concerned with how many snacks I can fit after I pack all my excavation gear. "How much sh*t do you need..?" A LOT. :( Great points on both sides; for now I need a robust and comfortable pack mule that doesn't mind getting a little banged around but can also hang tough on the highway, but once I'm back in an office all day I will definitely have a much nimbler racehorse of a bike to let out some energy on the way home.

I call shenanigans on Spite's naked bike luggage claims. I have luggage for my sport bike that's compatible with its naked sibling. I've got two 16-liter saddle bags that install in about 2 to 5 seconds each. I have a sport rack that pops in place of my rear seat allowing me to also mount my 37 liter top case. Even when taking my time, swapping out the rear seat and installing it takes less than 30 seconds. That's a total of 69 liters (nice) or about 18 gallons/2.4 cubic feet.

Both are amazing in their respected element. Plus when you ride one for a while then get back on the other you appreciate what it is more and their differences. Just my two cents but my answer is get the tuono factory. A fully built xr650, put an exhaust on it, rejet it, fix the carb, put a better intake on it and you can go over just about anything. its way faster then the klr or other similar sized Enduros. And the tuono speaks for it's self, if you know you know lol it will be right beside a s1000rr all the way to 170 mph which is all I really need but I'm comfortable with the handle bars. there's nothing I would change except it needs an exhaust and reflashed for the race ecu. My starter bike was a nicely modded ‘86 450 Nighthawk. It was perfect to learn on, being smooth at low rpms, and manageable. However, it was miserable on the gnarly logging roads in my area and ran out of breath above 60 mph. My second bike is an NX650. The 21” front wheel made it tricky on low speed maneuvers at first, and being a single means it requires better clutch management from a standstill, but the clearance and softer suspension eats up the logging roads and it’ll cruise at 70 all day long. It’s more comfortable on pavement, too. For me, it’s a better choice for a daily rider.

All three are super powerful, have electronic suspension, decent riding positions, etc. The Aprillia sounds the best and is the most affordable. The Ducati is beautiful and has a TON of parts available but all those parts are stupid expensive for what they are. Finally the BMW M1000R being new for 2023 is a little hard to find and you wont be getting a deal on one. Main things I agree with: 1. Naked bikes do look cooler than adv bikes 2. Adv bikes are more useful than naked bikes 3. Naked bikes are more fun on the road, adv bikes are more fun anywhere else 4. Adv bikes are heavier than naked bikes 5. Adv are much more versatile 6. Generally naked bikes are cheaper Personally, if I could afford 3 bikes I'd get a fun one, a versatile one, and a fast one. And what do I own, a bloody Versys 650 so a all-in-one ha ha

The reason why there is so many bike type is because there is so many type of riders! I owned three types, a sport touring, a cruiser and now an adventure bike, the adventure has been so far the best experience and the one I’ve been most comfortable with riding and testing my limitations. It’s heavier and taller, but I get to go anywhere I desire, and for me that is the purpose of a motorcycle, to be able to go places where you normally can’t with a regular car. If you are a beginner, I alway suggest going for a naked or a sport touring as these are great bike to learn from and to commute, get some experience on first, after the first season then you can think of something else.

Ummm.....commuters want to be able to carry stuff as needed, move at low speeds, stop and start in traffic. Spite was on the right track. What bike would most effectively replace a commuter car? ADV hands down. ADV are far more practical, comfortable, capable in any terrain, and loaded with features. If you are all about image and road performance, then be a 'Bro' and go along with a naked.

One size fits all is probably the ADV bike. While it does not handle as well in city traffic as a naked bike and is generally slower, you can do pretty much everything at a 5/10 level at the very least. Naked bikes in my experience are more suited for a single rider with a light load to have fun on a good road. Few naked bikes (only larger ones) would feel at home going 2 up and with luggage. That said, most ADV riders (especially those big BMW riders) would be much better off with a proper sport touring bike. There is no point in ADV if going offroad is not on the menu, since a proper tourer or sport tourer can do everything better on a road. You have to chose your bike according to the intended use to get most out of it.

I have a Ducati Multistrada 950s and a KTM Duke 890R and if I have to run a short errand the naked bike is so much easier to ride around town and park. If I’m doing hour long rides the KTM is also my go to bike. If I’m doing long freeway stints or all day mountain rides I take the Multi. For me at 6’ 180lbs and handsome, naked bikes rule unless you do a bunch of freeway.

We need to get Yammie on a Triumph Tiger in rally trim and see if that will influence a change of position. The triple engine note we know he loves, ample power to get you to felony speeds, and serious off road capability if you are not too afraid to put a few scratches on it.

A backpack doesn't suck! I don't go anywhere without my Ozark Trail backpack. The backpack I use is extremely lightweight, and easily fits in a shopping cart. It is my man-purse. I hardly notice it's there. The one thing I will concede is that ADV bikes are way overpriced on the secondary market. So get something that isn't a financial reach.

I don't even think that it is a debate... ADV have a bit of everything you need. They are the "safest" option to choose between motorcycles. They might not be for everyone, but they fit for the majority of people. They are practical. (I own a CBR600F4i btw) Nakeds are good if you want a bike to just commute or have fun doing silly things (except maybe off road lol) and have a car.

for me it really comes down to what you will be driving on. if you are going to be on the street only, the naked bike is better suited for that. if you will have to go down a non-paved road, then an adventure bike can handle that better.

I traded up from my Suzuki Inazuma 250 naked bike to a Vstrom 650 for my daily commute. The Vstrom is more than comfortable to hold its own on the motorway and has the ease of handling to filter between traffic on city streets, but it is more comfortable and provides better weather protection which is great for year round use. If I was to get the Suzuki SV650 it would only be 30lbs lighter without any other significant gains.

I'm 6'4" and I do enjoy riding my FZ07, even to work with a back pack. But I imagine on really long rides, the ADV would be a great choice. Honestly both a great. Keep up the great work.

Apple & apples. there are other perfect examples of both styles of bike with Identical engine/Gearbox combo's, but bringing down the budget a heap, the V-Strom 250SX is $7000 NZ and the GSX250 Naked with the same engine& Gearbox (249cc oil cooled single with 27hp) is $5000 NZ (The Faired version being $5500 NZ) and the main reasons for the price difference is... a USB charger on the V-Strom. and a larger front wheel, the rear wheels are the same wheel, as are the brakes, The V strom is 4 inches longer, and has a bit more size to the frame, which means normal sized Men are going to be more comfortable on a V-strom, as long as their butt can handle the much firmer rear shock, but shorter Men and most women would me more comfortable on the GSX, especially as the rear suspension is soft and cushy. As far as looks go, the GSX looks way better, if the V-Strom were to receive the styling of the GSX (and a softer rear shock), and maybe drop down to the 17" front wheel of the GSX, then many more V-Strom 250SX's would be sold and they would be even harder to get hold of, as Sale outweigh the supply everywhere they are sold!

I love, adventure, bikes, however, also I love the naked bikes, but for the naked bikes for me, the look with the crash guards for the frame, the engine, and the one in the back that you could use to hook up bags easier to it gives the bike an adventure like look, however it will be nice if it could do a little bit of a adventure style riding

I'm 6'3" and fit great on my 2020 Tiger 1200 (1160 cc, triple). And with 140 hp and 90 torks, quick shifter/blipper, shaft drive, 6 axis IMU, great suspension, and 90/10 tires, I can get my fix of hitting 100 in 2nd listening to that sweet triple sing. Then, when I need to eat miles, I have a great riding position, full wind protection (well, my elbows can get cold), cruise, and accommodations for either panniers or just strapping fry bags on. To say nothing of considering two-up riding. Best part? The new 2022/23 Tiger 1200 is a complete upgrade, losing 50 pounds and gaining 9 horsepower over my 2020, which already scares me.
