Nice review. I've been considering a lightweight toy for around-town errands, when I don't want to deal with one of my bigger bikes. My local dealer had the KLX230SM marked way down for the end-of-season, so I pulled the trigger. So far, no regrets. Yes, it's lacking in grunt, but for around town speeds and conditions it's perfectly adequate and happy. It's very nimble, the suspension is surprisingly good, as is the front brake. The six-speed transmission is also very good, which is fortunate because you use it a lot to get what power there is to the ground. My only complaints are the (lack of) seat comfort, the fact that the otherwise excellent instrumentation is obscured by the brake hose, and the squirrely fueling at idle, supposedly aimed at assisting new riders. Each of these gripes can be fixed - Seat Concepts for improving the stock plank, a cable tie and rubber spacer for the brake hose, and a manual idle control rather than the auto unit. Just keep in mind what this bike is, and is not. The mini-Moto may targeted for newbies, but an experienced rider can have a blast on it, and it makes trips to the hardware store a lot more fun.

Very nice! it sounds like you and the mighty 230 are gelling quite well. Glad to hear you're having fun with it - that's the most important factor of any motorcycle. 😄 Thanks for watching. Ride safe!

I got one of these bikes not too long ago. I was encouraged to get one of these as apposed to most other supermotos available was the low seat height(I'm only 5'4). It's a decent little bike for what it is, pretty good gas mileage for lugging around town. I've taken mine out on the highway some and at it'll do 65-70 no problem but it chugs gas at that rate. The exhaust has a pretty easy to remove baffle in the end which ups the noise level some without being annoying and having to retune the bike. Definitely waiting to see how the aftermarket side progresses as the bike gets a bit older. I got a few things in mind I wanna do when the warranty goes out lol.

hi...i am about to bye this 230 sm...But i am stack in considaretion to choose 300 sm....Anybody any opinion please?
@flamachiiman Жыл бұрын
this bike is made for small-town or back-road commuting or dirt with better tires. not highway, anyone looking and a machine smaller than 300cc should know that going in. People always trash on a bike in comments and such on aspects it wasn't designed for, which just confuses newer riders. also i think the sm version has a smaller rear sprocket? i have the dual sport version and it gets to the limiter at 75 no problem.. and im 225...
@GrominnAround Жыл бұрын
You have the same 230? Regular or s model?
@Tormundisc00l Жыл бұрын
This was my first bike... sort of. I had the 230S which was the low suspension dual sport model. I rode it for a summer. A few points from my ownership experience... 1. Fuel gauge is very pessimistic. It's flashing at you when you have half a tank. 2. On that note, the tank is tiny so the range is terrible. You get maybe 75-80 miles before you should probably get gas. 3. The mirrors suck. They need to be either taller or wider to be usable. I had to duck down in order to see in them. Even then they vibrated like hell. 4. That front brake cable looks awful and they are all like that. Kawasaki designed it that way on purpose. I have no idea why. You experienced why I sold it: unstable at highway speeds. I have a long commute on the freeway and that chassis and engine is not made for long freeway rides. I upgraded to an XSR700. That being said... I'd buy one again as a 2nd or 3rd bike. I miss having a dual sport and having a small bike for quick rides around town or for errands. Although I'd rather have the new KLR650 S for that.
@1122redbird9 ай бұрын
"Small bike and quick rides around town" and you say a KLR650 for that? Ok, so you'd rather have a 450 pound bike for quick errands. I've had one for 6 months now and the cable doesn't get in the way at all, it's not even as bad as the one on the CRF300L which is way worse. Mirrors have never vibrated, no idea what that means. They aren't great, but tilt your elbow to the side when glancing back and they're fine. Easy to replace anyway. Tank is small, but basically same as other dual sports and bike gets 70mpg so range is like 140 miles. Zero problem. Sounds like you're nitpicking with all due respect.

If you're coming from an R3 I'd recommend rolling with one of these over a Z-125. It's very playful and engaging and has a bit more travel capability than the Z125. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching and ride safe.

I’d love to have this little KLR bike! Just to cruise around. What is your regular ride that when spring comes you gonna ride? Gotta really keep your head on a swivel and watch the road conditions with the smaller wheels. My commute to work is. Mile and a half

How would you compare this to a Grom? Was thinking this would offer a bit more capability and could be treated in the same fun manor.
@Omni_Moto Жыл бұрын
With this being a dirt-bike chassis and having a little bit more engine output, it doesn't feel quite like a Grom. Oddly enough, I think a Grom feels more stable at speed than the KLX230. If you want to do Grom stuff with a larger bike though, I'd say you are on the right track when looking at this as an option, as it's very playful, nimble, and easy to ride. 👌

wibbli wobbly very janki steering. Klx 230s Dual sport bike. How should a Ryder stabilize it?
@Omni_Moto Жыл бұрын
You might not like this answer, but get a different bike. The KLX 230 frame is the same as the off-road bike. It’s is a super light-weight trail dirt-bike frame and I am fairly certain that plays a huge role in its lack of stability at higher speed. No dual-sport will be as stable as a sport styled motorcycle but you can look at something like a Versys 300-X that has good stability, a cooperative chassis, and still maintains capability in varying roadways and conditions.
