Honestly, I'm not really interested in this bike but I stayed for the review. I really like that you review bikes from the eyes of a potential buyer and you really understand for what kind of user a certain bike is made. Very balanced and objective with some personal (informed)opinions sprinkled in. This is how real journalism is supposed to be. Thanks and keep up the good work!

After wearing down the original tires I put a pair of Dunlop Trailmax on, front a 90/90-21 and rear a 120/90-18. These tires are like Micheln's Anakee dual sport tires. Ofcourse I don't take my KLX230 to the pit, or any serious enduro, for that I use my 350 excf. But the KLX can do any forest trails, mild rocky terrain and gravel roads in the rural areas, and then go fast and furious on asphalt back home when I'm done exploring. The tough rubber with the rounded profile along with the deep grooves makes the Trailmax easy to lean the bike when turning.

On the whole “buy the supermoto then get the dual sport wheels”, yes this is great. You end up with two bikes that can cover so much. But I would recommend that you get the dual sport version and buy SM wheels instead of the other way. Reason being is that they often pull a few inches of suspension travel out of the SM version. Not necessarily true of everyone, but it is nice to have the full travel when you’re in dirt mode.

Your joy riding this is totally spilling over, that's a pretty stellar endorsement. More people need to ride bikes like these and have fun rather than "I need to sit on the highway at 80mph on a bike trip i'll take some day".

i have this bike, it hits 74 on highway. i wish it did 85, but i actually bought it for other reasons. 300 lb bikes are so so so much more fun around town than bigger bikes and this bike has a 'hop on and go' nature that evokes freedom. So i want a KLX300SM in addition, this 230 is really more a play bike and trainer bike for some family and its quite useful within its limits

I'm just going to throw it out there, as an experienced rider that's 6'4" this bike is still fun(klx230). there is something about riding a slow bike fast that's more fun than riding a fast bike slow. sometimes I think about grabbing a bigger bike. But then I remember that I sold my 450 to buy a smaller bike because there is just something about them. great gas mileage, not too much power offroad, and the biggest thing. Everyone knows a 400+cc bike can do anything, but when you hit some gnarly terrain on a smaller bike, it surprises you every time that it's just as capable...

I have heard that quite a few people have gone with a 19in front wheel to get the best of both worlds. The 17in front and rear is pretty limited in dual sport tire options but, if you up the front to 19in you get quite a few good options for dual sport tires. You also don't sacrifice too much street performance with the 19in front wheel.
@avgjoerides Жыл бұрын
You bring up an interesting point. Obviously, a 21" front wheel is going to be far better for crossing obstacles if you are planning to ride somewhat difficult terrain off-road often enough. I wonder if for someone like me who is truly only interested in riding in the 50/50 to 70/30 range on/off road respectively, and never doing anything too crazy off-road, if going with a dual-sport or ADV bike with a 19'' front (w/17" or 18' rear) would actually be a better proposition to get, as you said, the best of both worlds?
@Unfunny_Username_389 Жыл бұрын
@@avgjoerides 19" will be absolutely fine on a bike like this, especially if you're going to be taking it fairly easy on and off road. In fact, I personally wouldn't hesitate to go up to 21" front - although then it wouldn't really be a Supermoto any more.
@avgjoerides Жыл бұрын
@@Unfunny_Username_389 True, but I was thinking more from the perspective of my current dilemma of finding my first motorcycle in 25ish years and I am mainly focused on ADV bikes. Sorry, I got kind of off the topic of this review, but GrayMan GW's comment got me thinking about how I was more or less ruling out the ADV bikes with 19" wheels on the front. I do want to be able to do 30 - 50% of my riding "off-road" so perhaps I have ruled out too many good ADV options with a 19" front wheel.

Tbf I think the ABS recommendation should just apply to everyone who will be riding these on the roads. Very few riders have regular experience doing an emergency stop from 70mph in the wet and I've not seen any evidence a human is more capable at this than even basic ABS. For track and dirt use then sure, skip ABS, but on the road it's a no-brainer IMO.
@victoriazero8869 Жыл бұрын
I believe the hard rule in several countries is mandatory front ABS and optional rear. There are many smaller bikes in Asia with rear drum (!) but front disc with ABS. Hard lock with the rear is nowhere as catastrophic as front lockup and thus more forgiving.

Good video. I’m surprised more reviewers don’t talk more about the blacked out frame on SM models. It really does make the bike look different. I would say if you’re going to ride off road, don’t get this bike. The regular KLX230/300 is so much more capable, but these SMs do look cool.

But wants a dirt bike now, he is 15 and about 150 or so lbs, maybe 5'8 5'10. 125s are to small and most other bikes are to tall for a beginner. This bike fits him very well, just need to take lights blikers, and mirrors off, and put on some dirt tires, sadly thought the dirt tires are very limited. With those changes how would this bike do for solely a dirt bike? Would this bike be a bad idea for a dirt bike only? Like I said the bike fits him great, and they have some pretty hefty discounts on it making it a good buy.

My grandson just bought a 2024 model, and I must say as a rider for 44 years now, after riding it, I was really disappointed. Seat is horrible, the shift lever is much too short so the distance between the footpeg and shifter makes it very difficult to get the toe of a work boot under the shifter. Since this is a bike very often purchased by a new rider, no fuel gauge, or gear indicator is ridiculous. Especially in 2024 for the asking price of this bike. Even China bikes have both. And for a number of years now they have not had what I consider a very useful item, namely a rear rack. Bungy a tackle box and a folding fishing rod to them and off you go. And last is shifting. I certainly hope it gets easier with mileage. Right now, it is very notchy, and you must give it that extra umph to shift.

The seat height on the 230SM is actually 33.3”, not 33.9 which is the seat height of the 300SM, probably due to the upmarket suspension the 300SM comes with. It’s an issue for me because of my height so I think I will be best served by the 230SM if I ever take it off road and don’t want to risk losing my footing on uneven ground.

Its annoying how every video about these 230 Kawasakis talks about them being a beginner bike. I like smaller lighter bikes over the tanks every one seems so interested in. The 300 would be good if it was aircooled. Its 1500 more from what ive seen also. These air cooled bikes with regular maintenance wiill keep going. Much simpler. And thats coming from an experiances rider 22yrs on bike and 300000km+ touring on big bikes + working @ yamaha dealership 10yrs and riding everything to roll through the doors. Wr250x or r is the greatest bike of all time. Nothing comes close to versatility, quallity vs smiles per miles. The kawa seems great for a first bike but the wr is a first and last bike if you ask me....

What would be the differences between this bike or the KLX 300sm compared to the 2008 wr250x ?

Put Maggie on the bike as the rider and show how the bikes would look/feel for female riders - have her get them off the kickstand. Women aren't always passengers.

Close, but no Cigar. Nice Bike, but Way too $$$ for what it is. $7K out the door? NOPE. Yamaha needs to challenge this with a buffed up XT250 with a real motor out of the MT03. Wasn't this $4999 last year, but they now have LED Headlights? Anything a single thumper does, a twin does better.

Whoops I was talking about the new '24 KLX3000.. Inflation or Greed I guess. I'll wait for more sane times, but in the meantime, I'm considering the Lifan KXP250 at $3K shipped. Not a cheap skate.. I bought a New XSR900 last year for $10.3K, and am a huge fan.

I've never understood it either. At all. I used to make fun of those riders - until I rode one. It is the most fun bike I own, and far more versatile and rugged they anything else I've ridden. You can keep up with sport bikes in the twisties, do 20' jumps, take it off road, or do a track day all while getting 55 miles to the gallon. It will help you improve all of your riding skills. It is literally the most fun I've had on two wheels. I'm a convert - I can't recommend one enough. Cheers!
