I've had my 07 since new and agree with your evaluation. The motor is brutal , you need to be ready for it's hit. It's an all on or off throttle response. I've also added that rear linkage from pro circuit and the fatty pipe. 14 years later still have the bike and received an entire rebuild of motor , trans , clutch . She is my dream bike.

That is so awesome Thomas! These bikes are rock solid. Glad you were able to snag a PC link for it too. Super hard to find!

Yes, agree, it's my dream bike too! It was lucky to pick mine up second hand. It had only done a few hours on it due to the fact the guy felt it was too powerful for the track he was riding on. The guy left it in the shed for three years. When I saw it, it still look brand new. I couldn't believe my luck and got it for half price from new!

I have had every make 250 two-stroke, they are all good in their own way. I am a diehard Kawasaki fan I have had two 05 and one 06 KX 250’s... They are hands-down my favorite, as long as you get the jetting right if you’re running a stock carb. What I love about them is that they have the hardest hitting mid range, reminds me of the brutal power bands of the early two strokes, I like the power there when you need it with the blip of the throttle.
@GregHitchko
@GregHitchko 3 жыл бұрын
Dude that is so sick! I would really love to pick up a 1999-2002 model next. But you are right on the mid range power, so fun, especially when hammering up to a jump face. Better hold on haha
@mareksumguy1887
@mareksumguy1887 3 жыл бұрын
The KX looks cooler... but a YZ is better in every way. Transient throttle was really bad on these KX’s. Unlike the YZ where you could really modulate it.

Wow, great clip Greg! I have a KX250 2007 and agree whole heartedly with your assessment. I had the front/rear suspension re-valved and sprung, pro-circuit lowering linkage and now handles great. Also installed a Vforce 3 reed block and added JD Jetting kit replacing the needle, idle and 160 jet with a 162 main jet (I recommend considering this). I just love the hard hitting power of the KX250! 😁. I'm just old school I guess. Hearing your comments on the 22mm offset triple clamp, I might now look into investing in one. Thanks for the great breakdown of a great bike that just needs a few mods to turn it into one mean green machine.
@GregHitchko
@GregHitchko 3 жыл бұрын
Hell yeah Richard!! That’s so rad to hear, the KX is soo fun, and even better with those few tweaks. Good to know you and others feel the same about the bike 👍🏼. Me personally, I noticed the different clamp offset immediately! Felt much more stable I’m ruts, it just tracks it so much better I feel.

1996 kx250 owner. From the sound of it our engines are completely opposite! Mine is all bottom and mid. I absolutely love the motor for trails but haven't had much time on the track. Took it on the track one time and the front forks would bottom out on any little bump. Also had a terrible oversteer problem. I finally resprung it and race teched the shock. Swingarm bearings are on the table right now. New piston, pegs, oversized caliper. Should be together by tomorrow, I'm so pumped!!
@GregHitchko
@GregHitchko 2 жыл бұрын
Right on Chris! Yeah from what I hear that seems to be the consensus about the older models, people liked the engine much better in terms of bottom and mid. I just picked up a 99 so I'm excited to try that and compare to my 07. Hope the rebuild RIPS! Enjoy my man.

Great evaluation of these late-model KX 250's. I know some guys just rave about them while many pro testers hated them, but I feel that modded like yours is likely makes it a much better bike. A buddy had both the '03 and '04 KX 125 at the same time I had my 2007 YZ 125 and I felt the Kawi was very scrunched up ergos as far as seat to pegs relationship, as I am 6'1" and always hated having to stand up on those green bikes. Aside from that, they were not far off the class-leader YZ, so I bet the 250 is also comparable. I always love to revisit this era of MX and I went 4-stroke but later on understood that it mostly matters on the rider, not the bike, at most non-pro levels of riding.

I have an 04 with a flywheel weight and 18inch rear. Been an amazing woods/enduro bike for years. only gripe is I personally HATE the clutch pull on these bikes. Saw a 05 for sale where the guy had lengthened the clutch arm out of the motor for the cable . Tried it with a Magura hydraulic and it really hides the problem well. I also recommend moving the forks up 5mm if you dont ride 4th & 5th gear all day.
@GregHitchko
@GregHitchko 3 жыл бұрын
I'd love to try a flywheel weight for my 07 even for motocross to see how it smooths it out a little bit. Clutch is also pretty hard to pull as well no matter how I route the cable! Thanks for dropping those tips on the thread man!

Hey Greg I've been following you for a minute now and I just wanted to say that I really appreciate your love for the two-stroke and the Kawasaki for some reason my Kawasaki's no matter what start first kick every time hot .....cold .....clapped..... new ......it doesn't matter and even though some of the little small things like cheap hardware center plastics and just general corner cutting stuff is down to happen when you're dealing with a production machine produced in the millions and we all know when we get our cowies we going to upgrade them, modify them and put the best component tree money can buy on them and one sorting that out I believe Kawasakis are the most reliable bikes I have ever had and I recently just found a mint 2001 KX125 that I'm currently doing resto mode on and I can see why you love these bikes especially since I'm 6 ft 3 it's a nice full size machine that fits us taller guys and the sound that comes out of it is nothing short of intoxicating anyways I hope to see some good how to videos coming up from you as I learn alot from your content..... wondering have you ever had any Kawasaki's from the old era and if so it was your favorite

i have a 05 kx250 its such a sweet bike for someone who takes it for a bit of MX riding a bit of trail ridding and a bit of playing around, it definitely needs valving springs triple clamps for serious MX , also it steered well until i set the sag, it almost needs the stinkbug to get more weight over the front, im doing a 2013 kx250f fork swap with some 21mm applied clamps hope it gives it a natural confident feeling

@@GregHitchko Its weird how different all the bikes feel and perform visually they are similar. I have a 96 YZ125 that doesn't corner as well as my RM250, but is very stable. Been hard for me to get used to the more modern flat seat versus the 90's dip in the seat. Feel like I'm riding on the bike and not with the bike. Some guys might not like the quick turning Suzuki or skinny frame. Its all preference really.

Currently doing a ground up rebuild on my old 1998 Honda CR125 that I bought new in 1998 and raced for a few years back then. Had Millennium Technologies rebuild the entire motor and put the 144cc overbore kit on it. Putting a Lectron carb, and a few other mods on it too. A good friend of mine bought a 1998 KX 125 at the same time and sent the motor and suspension to pro circuit. No doubt the bike was much faster and better handling after pro circuit had their way with it but even in stock form, although it was obviously down on power compared to the CR, the ergonomics encouraged the rider to push harder with more confidence.

@@GregHitchko Thanks. I recently picked up a 1998 Honda CR250 and a 2007 RM250 also. Searching KZbin videos for the RM is how I came across your channel. Doing a good job with it btw. Your video of the RM250s made me feel pretty good about picking up "a rare unicorn" as you put it. It s a fun bike to ride for sure. As far as doing a 125cc build, I’d highly encourage it. If you produce a video build on it, we’ll watch it. (*Dirt*Bikes currently in my stable 1998 CR125 and 1998 CR250, 2007 YZ450, 2007 RM250, 2017 KTM 350 XCF, and 2015 KTM Freeride 250 2 stroke. Those mid to late 90's Kawasaki's were like the gold standard of that era so i definitely believe it! I'd love to find and build one of those. Those new CRF's look niceee, it's hard to jump back on a two stroke after coming off of a four stroke. Either way, it's just great to be out on a dirt bike!

Cool video Greg. I have a project going, full 250 two stroke Kawasaki Carmichael replica, mixed with modern parts and i will use the 05, this will put an axe into my wallet, but its worth it, literally going to figure out, where to go, pro circuit top end, but i might take another step for the ignition,, maybe twisted development, custom triple clamps (not sure) maybe ride enginering, everything will be coated to rc's 01 Colours. I will however not paint the frame green, as i love the silver from Bubbas 05, Modern KYB rear and front suspension. Probably talon wheels as they have the closest to the magnesium look. Chevy trucks custom graphic kits. Will also lower the subframe , not sure how much yet, but i might try to squeese those numbers through some friends in the industry. Also different breaks calipers front and rear. The rest will be obviously the same companies that worked with kawi back then, for sparkplugs, airfilter etc. Full Hinson clutch, boyesen impeller. Yepp it might ruin my Wallet but it Will be a project that will take some time. But im up for it. Scrambling parts is the hard task. Passion is the drive!
