100% correct. If you don't have native speakers in your area, try finding people on to video chat with. Easy to find friends if you have a hobby like video games. Don't use AI to correct your pronunciation. It's more about muscle control so you need someone to actually look at your mouth to say R and L correctly.

Jackie Chan only spoke mediocre English before Hollywood, by his own admission, because he learnt English in Australia when he lived here, and found the accent nearly impossible to understand. He COULD, and DID speak it, but even in Hong Kong he never got a lot of practice. His English really improved after his Hollywood career took off. Does a mean Aussie accent though, way better than most US actors.

@@grimmsby3011 One of the issues I've witnessed (and least here in Europe) is that the language taught in schools and universities tends to be the most distilled, filtered out and standardized form. You know, the type of language you'd generally hear being used on TV or in dubbed movies: 100% correct, clean and clear. But very few people actually speak like that in real life. I studied Spanish for 4 years in university, I could read without issues, comprehend complex ideas and hold a conversation with other people in my university. And then I went to Barcelona. Confident in my abilities, I started a conversation with a bunch of locals. They were really impressed, and even commented on the fact that I sounded "like a TV host". But then they started talking more, and I realized that *they* could understand everything I was saying, but I could only catch like half of their speech. Because A: they were speaking much faster than I anticipated, B: they weren't trying to pronounce everything clearly (as I've been taught), C: they used obscure local terms and idioms I wasn't familiar with, and D: some of them also had pieces of Catalan in there. And I felt like a complete fool XD Sometimes the only way to actually learn how to speak a language is to practice it with the locals, at least occasionally. Even better if you can live somewhere where they speak the language - but that's not that easy, obviously.

Especially japanese to english, the two languages are practically the furthest apart and have next to no shared concepts, you're learning something entirely from the ground up and from scratch.
