In "Lawn Mower Detectives - High On Nitrogen", Taryl goes over a head scratcher that can cause your choke to stick on these Kawasaki engines. This one's on a Cub Cadet mower. Taryl's trick will get you back in business and up and running like new again.
Prior to and after the fix, a perpetrator falls right into Detective Junior's lap when he stumbles upon a thief riding a stolen lawn mower. Had this same issue on my scrub cadet with a Kohler 7000. On the kohler they use a foam piece like a washer around the choke shaft (presumably to keep out dirt). On mine it disintegrated and worked it's way into the shaft hole which made it bind up. Pretty much the same fix. Cheers!

I recently went from working on semi trucks to working on commercial mowers and equipment and it flat amazes me how many people just don't take care of their equipment and then get mad when it's a $1500 repair bill and it takes a week to get all the replacement parts that they've broken and neglected. If you don't want downtime costing you money then maintain your equipment.

Hey Terry and Friends This video was very helpful! Thank you! I ran my Gravely Z60 out of Gas again cutting at dusk. Fueled the tank but she wouldn't go and I could smell fuel so I let her stand in. the yard overnight to think about what she'd done. Still refused to go the next afternoon and Hydrolocked. After pulling the plugs she spit fuel five feet out each hole and most of my Left leg. Thanks Honey! I love you too! Checked spark! Lotsa spark both jugs. Dried her out with a flame job and heated the plugs! No Joy! And now she was pouring fuel out the exhaust. The in doubt! Get the KZbin out! Checked several videos but yer's was the choice with the "Runs when Vent tube pulled out of tank and plugged section cut off". I just pulled the fitting off the return line and also pulled the elbow off the supply line before the pump. That I figured would allow her to clear her jugs of all that unburnt fuel. Then let her spin! Couple seconds and she started to cough and barked to life for the first time in 24Hrs. Pulsed fuel to her by reconnecting and disconnecting the supply line until she kept running and then moved her into the shoot reconnect the Vent hose from the carb to the fuel tank. All is back to normal. She's a good running machine and as I know there's nothing really wrong, it ticks me off when she won't go. But I hope I have learned my lesson to keep her above a quarter Full for fuel and never have to have an issue. Seems there is a possibility to cause a vaporizer lock in the vent line when riunning her hot and then when the fuel stops the vaporized remaining fuel causes the iffy. Just don't let it run out of fuel and save yourself a bunch of hassles. Hope you company gets that Dental plan they've been promising! Best! Pecker

Sanding along the shaft length like that creates ridges perpendicular to the shaft's rotation, which can lead to hang-ups. It can also create flat spots, though in this application, that likely wouldn't cause any issues. Nonetheless, sanding with the direction of travel, around the circumference, is your best bet.

The fix for all FX series 2-barrel carburetor chokes is as follows: You want for all the dirt to be out of the choke shaft>carb body area and DRY MOLYDENUM DISULFIDE POWDER to be impregnated into the plastic shaft bushing and the hole in carb body. It's a PITA to remove those carbs, so do this to get the desired result: With the engine running use a soda-straw on a can of carb cleaner while working the choke lever (yes it will stutter and complain when the choke is closed - be quick about it.) and this will get the majority of the dirt off the plastic bushing on the shaft and out of the hole (bored in the carb body). Then use a small bottle like some 2-stroke oil comes in and throw in a handful of small nuts bolts BBs ball bearings - what have you. Fill the bottle 1/3rd to 1/2 full of plain gasoline, cigarette lighter fluid, carb cleaner spray, whatever. Then get a grease gun loaded with "Extreme Pressure Molybdenum-based Chassis Grease" and put 3-6 full pumps in it. Actually work your way up with the grease. You want it to be fluid still, not like ketchup. Squirt some in the bottle and shake to mix the solvent and grease together. When it will still run off your finger - get the engine running high speed, squirt (through a nail-hole you make in the cap )some of this behind the choke lever and rapidly move the lever back and forth. The slight vacuum behind the air cleaner will draw the stuff into and around the choke shaft and bushing. Then shut it off and leave it overnight for the solvent to dry and the grease to reestablish itself. It will work nice and buttery-smooth now but the problem is that dirt will quickly add to the grease and seize the shaft up again. So now engine off work the choke lever by hand deliberately putting force sideways to the shaft axis UP, DOWN, DIRECTION OF AIRFLOW, AGAINST DIRECTION OF AIRFLOW. Do that as many times as you can stand to do it. You are impregnating the surfaces of that cheap little "shaft & bushing-bearing" with good old priceless MoS2 particles that is the very finest dry lubricant. NOTE: PLAN ON CHANGING #2 SPARK PLUG AFTER THIS IN CASE THE MOLY SHORTS OUT THAT PLUG ! Now start the engine and wash behind the choke lever with carb cleaner. It wont affect the moly-film on the parts - but it WILL remove the grease and not catch and hold dirt. Yes - this will eventually wear off. Probably after 2-3-4 seasons. But when it does then you will know what to do. PS - if this doesnt work its because the engine has backfired and bent the cheap flat choke shaft. Then the carb has to come off and the choke shutter tapped on with a small plastic hammer until the shaft no longer bulges away from the direction of airflow.

Thank you for all you do. Not to pick on you but when using water use what's needed but not let it run unnecessarily. My depression era father taught me this so I thought I would pass it along. Thanks and stay well
