As someone who is old enough to have ridden the original, I can say that the first thing we did in the US after purchasing a Z, was to replace the original exhaust with a 4 into 1 system. Gladly I do not have to take that step with my new one. Although the stock exhaust on the RS is a little mild compared to my old Kerkers!

I welded VW muffler extensions to the four pipes. It looked like it had straight pipes, was muffled enough, and sounded like an Indy car. We had to reduce the carb jetting a little to get the mixture right ( more back pressure), but it still ran 135mph. Most fun I’ve ever had on a motorcycle.

My Father bought a new 1975 Z-1 900. It was the last year of the Z-1 before it became the KZ-900 in 1976. He gave it to me when he felt he was "too old to ride anymore," one year before he passed. It was the fastest thing on the road in 1975 but by the time it was mine, it wasn't as fast as 600cc sport bikes. It didn't handle very well & the breaks were terrible. It WAS a super cool bike that always got complements at bike nights & it was a perfectly competent commuter that still had enough power to get you thrown in jail if you were trying to. The Z-900 RS is one of the bikes I'm most interested in today as it still has the "Cool Factor" of my Father's Z-1 & there's not a doubt in my mind that it's head & shoulders above the original Z-1 on every level.

Yes. Fuel cut on decel causes it. ECU flash is said to fix it. 9000 miles with stock ECU: it does not bother me much with my moderate pace of riding. If I rode twisty roads very fast in 3rd gear I would care about fixing it.
@namduran2 жыл бұрын
The snatchy throttle can take a bit of getting used to, especially when you come from a silky smooth one. It takes a bit of gentle caressing to smooth it out but you get used to it after a while. You can of course spend £300 to remap the ECU but it doesn’t bother me so much as to warrant forking that kind of cash out. Overall it’s a cracking bike with plenty of power and great handling for the road.
@gm16v1492 жыл бұрын
Still got my Jaffa after buying it in 2018. I don’t think I’ll ever part with it, and it’s the best colour. Done plenty of miles on it now, and it’s been faultless apart from the snatchy throttle which is easily fixed with a ECU flash. Only problem if you buy the 4 into 4s is you can’t apparently use the centre stand if you have one fitted, and a centre stand is essential in my books. I’ve got the Kawasaki centre stand, Kawasaki heated grips and grab rail. I haven’t touched the exhaust and don’t intend to either.

This, while they clearly have been able to maintain the classic look. Less weight, lower build cost, less complexity, more reliability. No complaints! I rode a brand new 1974 Z1 in 1974: 81bhp, 510 lbs. Scared the shite out of me :). And a lot of owners ditched that 4-into-4 for a lighter, louder 4-into-1...which simply made sense. Looking for new rig now, and I'm seriously considering this against the S1000GT, 1000SX, and a couple other nakeds mainly because of the looks (and it's a very competent piece)! Bags and fairings are out there!

Amazing review as usual. Thanks a lot for the entertaining content. I am torn between this motorbike and the BMW F750GS. I know, its miles a part comparison. I just need a bike for for one up and sometimes two up and tour around between cities with some luggage. I love the classic looks of something like z900rs and also appretiate the F750GS practicality. As you guys say in the UK, you cant have the cake and eat it haaa. It would be amazing if you can review the F750GS. :)

I'd consider buying one if they had twin shocks. Same for a Ducati Scrambler. If you are going to make a retro bike, then make it retro! However, they seem to have gotten the W800 "right", which is why I will likely have one someday.

Hey Motobob thanks a lot for thorough info! Gonna ask you to give us a hand here. Coming from a Yamaha FZ6 myself which is a very decent all rounder (unbeatable bang for the buck ratio) and my shortlist for a substitute is this z900rs and the new awaited xsr900. I know by heart all the specs on both, but gonna have to trust you on the feels since where I live it's just impossible to get your hands on a demo bike of these. I measure 1.70m and weigh 70kg (mind the metric system) and I know ergonomics will be an important feature to help me make up my mind. I did test the r nine t and felt too large and heavy, and the speed twin which ergonomically was great, but I prefer the smoothness of the 4 pot engine I think. Cheers!!

Twin shocks don t have the same stability as a mono shock when taking a corner. I have a honda monkey and while in a corner the twin shocks seem to make the back wheel wobble just slightly. I really appreciate the mono shock on my z900 rs. thanks for the video.

Great review! I test rode one a few years ago and found the throttle very abrupt and wondering how this bike was from your perspective.
@seriousandy66562 жыл бұрын
The throttle is extremely snatchy. I am already used to it after a few rides, but it can be corrected with an ECU reflash....

Not saying you, but it seems like a lot of people confuse a high warm-up idle with a snatchy throttle. I have 2,600 miles on my new one, never been an issue. Just seems responsive to me, not snatchy.

@@justinhealy1364 No one confuses a high warm-up idle with a snatchy throttle.

@@nikos-giorgos what I mean is, you try to get on and ride cold, it will definitely feel jumpy. I can see test riders not liking that feel.

Great video content but that overhead lighting is very distracting showing up in the paint and every reflection.

No way should they have put four-to-four pipes on it. That 4-to-1 is achingly gorgeous, and like Kwak said it's light. (Adding weight is an insult to emissions.) The K1 likely had 4-to-4 pipes because it needed it. Not because of styling. Nowadays tech has improved.

Thank you for the review. Although I am old enough to have ridden the original, I couldn’t afford one at the time. Update, I am now the very proud owner of a Z900RS and I love it. Perhaps they could have added heated grips and self cancelling indicators but I suppose it keeps the price down. Your review was fair, I have no plans for a four into four, the OE exhaust sounds great and keeps the weight down.
