I've owned my Kawasaki Z900RS for two years now. While I love the bike, and no bike is perfect, the Z900RS has a few quirks and some annoying habits that rear their head after long term riding. Listen along as I outline my top 5 hates of the Kawasaki Z900RS.

Also you talk about idle speed... For god sake, can't you remember manual chokes, where revs would suddenly rise? Or are you one of these middle aged men who never sat on a bike until you hit 50??
@BlueMarbleRider
@BlueMarbleRider 3 жыл бұрын
And hello to you, Chris! :-) I started riding at 15 in England in 1981 (yes, illegally as outlined in my vid "My first motorcycle and the lessons learned"). One lesson I learned from an early age as I regularly ripped into bikes to see how they worked was that chokes are a crude, but that they were (then) the only way to warm an IC engine up. That doesn't mean they were a great solution. They weren't, as my pal who worked at McLaren just down the road showed me, when he tore racing engines apart after only a few races... They have two problems - one: chokes markedly over-richen the mixture which is inherently bad for cold starting IC engines (particularly 4 strokes) as the excess petrol washes oil from the bore while increasing revs on a cold engine - ouch. And 2 - increased revs on a cold engine are bad as the bores are not at tolerance and there is slop/movement between moving parts (pistons/rings/bores etc). Modern bikes with their intelligent ECUs and much finer tolerances are able to warm engines much more gently, in a much more controlled fashion than a choke ever could - that is why we use them today. Together with finer tolerances, there is no need to rev the shyte out of an engine to keep it running while cold. The only reason the Z900RS is over-revved while cold is to meet Euro 5 cold start emission standards. It's like having a laser to etch a diamond and using a bloody mallet instead. With it's ECU, the bike is perfectly capable of warming up in a more refined (quiet) and less harmful manner - still maintaining oil pressure but not revving a cold engine more than necessary. Check out Ivan's ECU reflash...1500rpm smooth as you like, warms up a little slower, but in a more refined way. As it should be in 2020...Things have changed. Don't take this the wrong way, I simply want to assure you, I'm not some "middle aged man who never sat on a bike until you hit 50??" :-) Cheers.

In that case, perhaps Kawasaki have engineered in the rev increase to mimic 70's/80's carburetted motorcycles with a choke to match the retro look? As a 40 odd year old guy, I can't imagine why they'd re-do the Z series unless it was to attract buyers my age (having previously owned bikes of that era)

I have a 2021 and while it's somewhat twitchy, it's not bad compared to some other bikes on the market with electronic throttle. Currently, my other bike is a CFMoto and its electronic throttle is ultra twitchy, so after riding that for years the Kawi feels really smooth. I really liked the cable throttles all my older bikes used to have, they were all smoother than the new electronic variants.

Hi Du-Rron, When I was looking for luggage options for my Z900RS, I did not want to spoil my motorcycle with luggage bars and racks, etc. I bought these bags and used them three weeks for holidays. Perfect: not too big, they fit like a glove and are very sturdy. When I take them off, you have no bars or anything. There are two connection points, to fit the bar. But it is only there when you need it. Also, they come with waterproof inner bags. They work. Tested..:-)) sw-motech.com/Produkte/Gepaeck/Satteltaschen/BLAZE/4052572052037.htm

On the temperature, while the bike does run quite warm, it doesn't fluctuate as much as you think. Kawasaki, for some reason, decided to put a very sensitive temp gauge. There's no harm even if the temp gauge goes up to 5 bars. On the acceleration snatch, it's the throttle tube that could have been better designed. After 3-4 months you'll learn how to be more attuned to it, trick is to use your elbow rather than your wrist, to throttle up.

I agree about the high idle from cold, and also how long it keeps its high idle. I also remember the Kawasakis from the late 70s and well into the 80s that used to rev instantly to 4000 rpm the moment they fired. And with an choke control impossible to control; the engine either revved its head off, or it stalled. The fix was easy; just richen the idle mixture about half a turn, give or take, and the engine would start and idle as it should, cold or warm.
@BlueMarbleRider
@BlueMarbleRider 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I remember that too. Ironic that we now have the tech to start and run a bike at 1000rpm from cold without a stall, but now environmental concerns mean that we have to go back to the 70s...almost like a choke - like you say. Cheers.

Man, I'm gonna say to you about the handlebar, I've got a Triumph speed twin and one the thing I really annoy at this motorcycle is the handlebar, it is low and the weight of my shoulder goes directly to my hands, for a long trip it hurts. I had to put a handlebar raiser to reduce the pain. I can't wait to change my speed twin for a z900rs.

My first "Moped" I'm living in a very close neighbourhood. I agree with the cold start issue. Too much rpm. Starting in early times - it's a nogo. Also in combination with the 93 dba exhaust noise. For me, it could be quite under 90 dba. She's a little too loud. Here in Middle Europe is the exhaust noise since last season in public discussions with bad consequences for us. The OCD in me wishes it had symmetrical pipes. :D Other than that, the adult in me appreciates the points you made. I wonder sometimes how much the ECU reflashes really hurt the emissions. I intend to keep stock pipes (because I want to be able to leave at, say, 11:30pm without upsetting the neighbors -- but this is totally my own self interest), and don't intend to remove things like the PAIR valve, but optimizing the fueling, the on/off throttle transition, the idle RPMs, the engine braking etc. is attractive to me. I wonder how much emissions damage is done by just optimizing those things while keeping the catalytic converter, stock pipes, PAIR, etc.

I don't have the answer to that SG, but I imagine there is some impact. It's easy to brush it aside, but you're right - we all have to live on this blue marble together and have a responsibility to do our part to clean it up. I have never had anything reflashed/removed emissions before, but I feel this bike really needs a reflash for it to work properly. We're in the last few generations of IC bikes...and they will get more restricted/unrideable until the only alternative is electric. However, that said, if you live in a jurisdiction that does emissions testing every year or so, then I wouldn't touch it...or have two ecu's...Cheers. BMR.

I quickshift my '23 Café all the time, except for downshifts - as I simply prefer to blip the throttle myself, so I'll probably not do an aftermarket quickshifter. I'd love to make the exhaust just a little throatier. I need to research exhausts more - as well as a tune as I'm just a week away from my one year anniversary and thus the end of the factory warranty. Oh boy - lots of fun coming! Oh, and the stock Dunlops? Not the worst I've ever ridden, but they're the most squirrelly of any tires I've experienced. Part of it was experimenting with tire pressure. Here in central Texas, it gets so hot in the summer, that I feel it actually helps soften the tires. The worst experience I had was a long downhill sweeper at 110mph+. I was as close to swapping ends as I've ever been in my 40+ years of riding. I love my black and gold beauty and cannot wait to bump its performance.

Just purchased a brand new 2020 in candytone green. By far its worst aspect is the abrupt fueling and excessive engine braking. An Ivan's reflash helped a lot, and made the bike run even stronger, but it still didn't fully satisfy me. Then I installed a 16T countershaft sprocket, and voila! Combined with the Ivan's, this motorcycle is transformed from ill-tempered ogre to a polished powerhouse. It is "WOW!" in every way. Bridgestone S22 were installed prior to delivery because I like 'em on other bikes. Will reserve judgment for now on how well they suit the Z900RS. Rear shock is undersprung for my 225 pounds, it's being replaced by a Wilbers 640 with their super trick X-PA mechanical preload collar. It should arrive in about a week. Those brushed aluminum bits have been redone in matte and satin blacks as appropriate. Front fender brackets were swapped for the black pieces from a Cafe model. Now, my bike looks more "of a piece" with less visual distractions, and this highlights the beautiful paint and chrome even more. Happily, the dealer made me a good deal on this machine because sorting her has cost a pretty penny, or maybe a few! But she is worth the effort, and the results are quite delightful!
@BlueMarbleRider
@BlueMarbleRider 3 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you've got her pretty much where you want her Ricardo. I've heard the 16T counter sprocket is a popular one. How do you feel about the accelleration? Noticeable decrease? What about revs at highway speed? The shock is definitely on the light side for the bike and it is often replaces. I'm still farkling mine, but may well go aftermarket too. Have fun! Love that colour. Cheers.
@RickyJr46
@RickyJr46 3 жыл бұрын
BlueMarble, I actually think the taller first gear helps acceleration because it's now a much more useful gear. Take-offs are lots more consistent. The Ivan's reflash does add some power across the range...pulling the taller ratios is no problem. On backroads I can confidently open the throttle earlier on corner exits. Off the throttle is no longer like tossing out an anchor, because engine braking feels natural and doesn't upset the balance. Another nicety is the reflash + 16T restored a useful trailing throttle mode, without invoking the on/off/on/off craziness. Ivan does other neat stuff like dropping the cooling fan start setpoint which helps in traffic. His customer service is top notch: he completed the job and had it back out the door in three hours. The box was out of my hands for only five days! Veteran tuner Marc Salvisberg at Factory Pro Racing in NorCal says smooth and predictable throttle response is a rider's best friend on the track and it carries over to the street. That is something which separates the merely rideable from the truly pleasurable. Good stuff!
@RickyJr46
@RickyJr46 3 жыл бұрын
Just a quick add: according to the most excellent website gearingcommander.com the 16T cog dropped the 6th gear 70mph revs from 4179 to 3918, a change of -261 rpm. The data tables even showed how much the axle position would change...that site is some true moto-geek genius!

The rev range on cold is to warm the engine up sooner, and also doesnt affect it at all with how modern engines are built, same goes for waiting for the engine to warm up before you ride, doesnt matter anymore since the oil is so thin nowdays it instantly lubricates all part of the engine and you can go, should yoou trash it from the 1st second, you can, but you shouldnt, not because the engine, but because your tires are cold, so yeah, might be annoying, but nnot damaging at all, so your pet peeve is just that, a pet peeve.
@BlueMarbleRider
@BlueMarbleRider Жыл бұрын
Nicely put, but I if Kaw had their druthers and the fuel emissions weren't in place on cold start up, the engineers would rather program modern bikes to idle lower at cold start up: while tolerances and oils are better, cold metal is still contracted and has to warm to expand into the bores/bearings/cams and pushing them around at 2500/2750rpm is not optimal for wear and tear. Cheers.

Have a little over 8k miles on mine now. Don't agree with the gripes presented here (most are aesthetics anyway), except I do replace with RT5 tires after OEM's wear out (on all my bikes actually). As for the idle: simply adjust it if you aren't happy with it. Also, the bike is not overheating at "6 bars", that is still in its normal operating range. In climates where it is 100+ in summers, seeing it maxed at 6 bars is not unusual in traffic. If the gauge starts flashing (and the big red bars light up) then it is overheating, which my bike has never done. The fan doesn't even come on till 5 bars -- in the winter you question whether the fan even works at all :) For tires, my OEM tires lasted about 4k miles rear, and 8k miles front. We'll see how long the RT5 last on this beast. So my gripe: it eats tires fast :)
@BlueMarbleRider
@BlueMarbleRider 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comments, Byron. Your analysis is in the minority regarding the temp guage - not that it makes you wrong; however, most folks seem to agree that not only does the bike run hot, but that the fuelling goes to pieces at 5 and 6 bars. Before my reflash, I used to notice that my bike ran well under 4 bars, but once over that temp, it began to have fuelling issues/popping, rough running etc. Having just experienced 42C for a week on Vancouver Island, my bike ran faultlessly, with the reflashed mixture and fan keeping the bike at 3 to 4 bars - in the middle of the range. Yes, as my mechanic told me, the red bar on and the temp guage flashing is a serious overheat (damage has been done), but, running at 6 bars is not a good long term condition the bike's engine will like. Last video "HOT" for more details. Cheers.

@@BlueMarbleRider Hi BlueMarbleRider, thanks for responding. I meant to correct my post as I later realized that this was about the older z900rs. I've read that the newer models (that I have) have a larger radiator, so I think you are spot on about the older models and a potential "running hot" problem. Sorry about that. For my newer model in 100+ heat and stopped at traffic light, it will quickly get hot, fan on at 5 bars, will go to 6, but as soon as moving at a decent speed back down to 3 bars. It never "over heats" though (flashing indicators). Glad you figured out a solution!!

Nitpicking. Maybe you should have gotten the cafe. Black handlebars and much lower rise. Bikini fairing. My bike idles a little high on cold start but not 2,000 RPM. And it doesn't climb. When it's idling high on cold start, if you turn the throttle back the opposite way, the idle goes down. Good to know the stock tires will last. I'm 60 years old and I don't ride very aggressively. I put 20mm bar risers on mine which made the riding position more comfortable. Also eliminated the top hold-down bracket that you're so disappointed with. I have no complaints about my bike. I've seen other complaints about throttle snatchyness but I just haven't experienced it on my bike. Why didn't you keep the original seat? Just curious.

Thanks for the fb. Didn't like the fairing shape or colours of the cafe, so made my own instead. Love the looks. My cold-start was always much higher than 2000rpm as shown in the video. I used to turn the throttle back too, but was warned by the mechanic that this would harm the TPS apparently. Really like the diamond pattern older looking seats, although may go for a black version of the Luimoto again. Cheers.

2500 rpm isn't too high and won't harm the engine. The high idle speed is designed to get the engine up to temp as quickly as possible. This warms the catalytic converter up allowing the engine to achieve closed loop operation. This is done for emissions compliance.
@BlueMarbleRider
@BlueMarbleRider 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Jakk: I do mention that it is done for Euro 4/5 compliance; however, a cold engine should never idle above 12-1500rpm until operational tolerences are achieved (expansion of pistons and rings into bore, etc). Until that time, there is piston slop, ring wear and bore scoring taking place. Modern tolerances are better than they used to be, as are oils, and while they mitigate some wear, they do not negate the effects of repeated cold starts on an engine. If Kawasaki had the choice, they would not have the engine start from cold and abruptly hit 2750rpm; this is not an engineering solution that they would employ in the absence of new emission laws.

As a 'naked' bike, how would you compare to the BMW R1250R in the following scenario: I just completed a 2 week moto tour in the Alps and Dolomites (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy), on a rented 1250R with side bags. So riding all day for 14 days, looking for the most challenging/technical roads, many twisties, tight hairpins, severe elevation changes, off-camber turns, very narrow roads with a lot of passing of trucks, campers, bicyclists, and busses, etc. Some days didn't even get above 3rd gear all day. How would the Z900RS do compared to the 1250R on this trip????? p.s. the 1250R sure is ugly to look at, but was a competent if slightly 'too perfect/boring' machine.

Sounds like a great trip, Jdesmo. Love the Italian Dolomites, although haven't been for years. Given the traffic, the 1250R sounds like perfect bike for it - comfy, torquey, stable. The Z wouldn't be as comfortable, although I'm betting it would be more fun coming off the corners - it's around 25kg lighter and likely more firmly sprung. It's a riders bike, but 14 days...in the saddle...that might get irksome. I would enjoy it, but lost of breaks...

@@BlueMarbleRider Thanks. I was under the impression that many reviewers said "comfy, torquey, stable" about the ZRS also??. I have done 15 moto tours in Europe since 2005. Two on Ducati Multistrada ( first gen. 1100 single cam air cooled, second gen. 1200 twin cam liquid cooled) ten on R1200/1250GS, and three on the R1200/1250R. Riding and living with the GS was by far the least enjoyable in the mountains. The Multistradas were the best, the old air cooled my favorite. The 1250R has all the tech, fancy electronics, TFT, and gizmos. I didn't touch the drive modes, left it in 'Touring' also in the rain, didn't use the cruise control, didn't touch the active suspension settings, and the TFT layout is really shitty (no round dials configuration). The only 'extra' functions I enjoyed were the heated grips and quickshifter. However, I rode a 1200R without quickshifter in Sardinia + Corsica few years ago and was no less enjoyable. The R has low ground clearance (good for lower seat and lower CG but you scrape the pegs when leaning hard) As far as what I ride at home- I only ever rode Ducatis going back to 1982, when very few people even knew what a Ducati was. My sport riding days are probably numbered, hence my interest in the ZRS.

I've just started looking at the z990rs with interest in purchasing one. I owned a 76 KZ900 and I keep here the Z900RS called the Zed900. Explain where this Zed comes from. I just knew mine as a KZ900.

Hi, Jojo: the Z1 was the first 900 four cylinder released by Kawasaki in 72. The Z1B came out sometime later, and after that they changed the look and a few mechanical details and that's when the the KZ appeared. Checkout this video for a better explanation: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lV7bnYCvbLKhhrc&ab_channel=Pete%27sClassicCycle and this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZ6lc5xtf86spKM&ab_channel=Johnnysvintagemotorcycle

@@BlueMarbleRider thanks for your reply. Actually I knew the difference between the Z1900 & the KZ900. What I was asking is you calling it a ZED900 where we call it a ZEE900 or KZEE900. So it's probably just the part of the world we live in and how we pronounce the name of the bike. I really enjoyed my 1976 KZ900 that I had done a few mods. The bike ran really well.

1200 - yes. Lovely bike. I enjoyed the ride I took on it, and felt it was a great long term bike. It's different from the Z900RS, not quite as sporty and responsive or urgent, more relaxed.

I was told by the Kawasaki mechanics not to twist the throttle like you shown here because it can result in damaging it.

Yes, you are right it can affect the TPS sensor, but at the time I wasn't aware of that. However, that said, the bike seems great. And now, after the reflash, it is perfect. Cheers.
