Continuing on with my Kawasaki ZX6R J2 maintenance, I am going to replace the old brake fluid in the rear brake system. As the caliper works perfectly and the pads have plenty of life left in them I will just give the caliper a thorough clean as it looks very dirty.

Hmm, so you did everything else but the slide pin bracket, which I'm having difficulty with because it SHOULD come off but I think it's seized but I don't know how to free it and grease up the pins, but as there's a rubber boot on and no clear view of what I'm meant to be loosening up it's bloody difficult. I was hoping that you would show me, but you didn't touch it so it's of no help,although the rest is useful though, although I've worked it out myself. If you're still up north we can't be very far from each other, I'm in Bury you see and regular ride, because I'm classed as retired because of my back but, weirdly enough I can handle a bike with a decent seat, spinal problems, but i ride a fazer 1000 mostly, but am doing up the exact same model as yours at present 😉

Right, it's ok, I've sussed it! All you need to do is put a flat head screw driver in between the bracket and the side part of the caliper and then lever it out, bloody hell, the idiot put copper grease on it too and it must have had a reaction to whatever and seized. They recommend you put red rubber grease on anything steel that meets rubber to protect the rubber, NOT copper grease which in time degrades the rubber. So I've managed to get it off, i need to clean it up, rub it down with some wet and dry and get it as smooth as possible, regrease with RED RUBBER GREASE and then put the whole lot back together. They also recommend putting that red rubber grease on the outside of the piston and rubber seals too, for ease of movement and protection from rust. By the way, there's a brake fluid tester pen you can get from amazon to test for moisture in the fluid, pretty useful and only about a fiver

@@adriantroalic9298 Glad you sussed it! I did't want to strip it down too far after the failure rebuilding the front calipers first time round and it all seemed to work quite nicely anyway. I'm not too far from you then, Saddleworth area. Have you put any videos up of your rebuild? I'd love to get my hands on a project bike for this winter so I'll be keeping a lookout for anything cheap at the end of summer. I did't know about the brake fluid tester so think I'll have a look for that. God luck with the project!

I just did my front caliper's last week and I switched out the original toyo manufacturer pads for EBC double HH sintered pads and just did the rear tonight with the same brand. Stopping power is phenomenal now! Rear brakes are just marginally better with the EBC and all new fresh dot4 brake fluid. A few people was saying that they'll lock up but I got on them fairly hard and nothing but slowing me down very quickly for rear brake only. I may not have got them bled very well, because my exhaust is in the way trying to get the air out of the system. What would be a strong indicator that theirs air in the system?

The brakes will feel very squeezable if there is air in. When fully bled they are very firm to pull. Imagine that the air will compress whilst fluid will not and so you would feel that in the brake levers.
