Video 3 from our 8 day kayak camping trip on the New River in West Virginia. From a fantastic sunrise near Radford, through the gate to the unknown near Eggleston, to the setting sun at Pearisburg - the guys take it all in on a long day on the adventure. Check out Yakkelberry / @yakkelberry214

Arsenal rapids, Parrot, Big Falls. Spent years paddling this area. The mountains separate and form a pass at Big Falls. This is the exact spot where the New River turns to the north and flows towards the Ohio River. There is no other pass along its length where this could happen. You can see the cut as far away as Parrot. The worst the New River in Virginia has to offer, of course, is Double Shoals back to the west about 2 or 3 miles below the Fries dam. It drops so much and goes on for so long... well, you just can't stay lucky but for so long. Once you're in it, you're in it, for what must be nearly a half mile. Maybe more.

Great video. We love paddling the new river. FYI: for future reference, that sweet camping spot you were hoping for on the back side of the island after the wave train rapid. There are a few good sites on different areas of the island. How was McCoy falls? Did you have a enough water? alls on your trip? was there enough water to run them?

An amazing trip. Wish I was there. thanks for sharing it. I just started kayaking last year. Done a few trips, even camped out one night. Not really done any true adventures yet. Feeling challenged to do so.

Kevin, don't be confused. There is a long standing debate within the kayaking community about rudders. For some reason, there are some that think that using your feet to steer your boat is unacceptable. I have boats with them and boats without. The Yukon absolutely needs one to track straight. Others do not. The Tsunami doesn't need one to go straight. That does not mean you shouldn't have one. Most purists argue that only in weathercocking situations (wind effect that turns your kayak into the wind) should any tracking aids be deployed. Most of these kayakers use a retractable skeg. Yet the poor skeg is inferior to its more advanced pivoting cousin. Why? Because the skeg cannot pivot and steer. Saying the rudder is not for steering is like saying computers were not meant for personal use...so we shouldn't use them that way - makes no sense and it is historically false. There is no rational thought that would lead you to the conclusion that a foot controlled rudder should not be used for steering...only idealists who value boat design and technique over an ancient innovation that grossly simplifies boat steering. With that being said, having the skills needed to get by without a rudder is something I would argue for every time. But, hey, I don't walk or ride a horse - I steer a car with a steering wheel...because it is easier, and just makes sense. Kayakers did not invent the rudder. Rather they simply adapted the means of steering waterborne vessels onto their craft. For kayakers to act as if they own the definition of rudder and the purpose of it is absolutely hilarious...Yes, Kevin, it is for steering - and you are going to love it. I have paddled thousands of miles in my day and I would not do a long trip without one.
