This was my first shark from the kayak, and after spending 5 minutes trying to remove the hook with pliers and being unable to get it out, I cut the line so that I didn't keep the fish out of the water any longer. I felt that if I kept trying, the shark would suffocate and die. Luckily they were NOT stainless steel hooks and it has certainly rusted out by now. Since this trip, I now pinch down the barbs on my hooks and have removed the hook from about 15 sharks since this trip. It is all a learning experience and I learned a lot from the mistakes I made on this trip.
Offshore Trip Gone Wrong: Part 3
I traveled from Corpus Christi up to Galveston, TX in search of my next target: landing a big shark from the kayak. Well, before long I had my first run and I could tell this was the kind of fish I was looking for. I landed my first shark, a nice 6 foot blacktip, but I would soon learn that if you lose your focus for just one second, the ocean will take advantage. My whole world got turned upside down in a heartbeat... literally.

My first time Kayaking and this Kayak held strong. kzbin.infoUgkx4k5UrhC3v_Y4hIEaXLGvHcN5a5aBmZNB The water got pretty rough as a speed boat zipped by me, and the Kayak withstood it (I expected to be capsized). The Ores are very easy to put together, the pump worked beautifully. the seats are a bit hard to sit in after a while (I recommend sitting on the floor). after reading the reviews I was very scared it'd get a hole in it, the material is very strong and durable. The Air valve may need a small Phillips head screwdriver to adjust, other than that, it's well worth the money!(update)I've gone Kayaking in 3 Lakes and 2 rivers totaling about 40 miles. the kayak had two holes and they patched easily and no other problems can't wait for kayaking season this year!

If you’ve never caught a shark you wouldn’t understand. It’s like getting a nail out of a giant slab of wood by hand. Most hooks rust out for one unless it’s stainless steel and most are not. He saved the shark from suffocation and they can’t feel it in the mouth anyway. He learned a valuable lesson and posted this as a wow I almost died don’t make the same mistakes. Thank you sir for showing the kayak/boating world the true it can happen moments. Glad you’re alive my dude, Tight lines.

Bs! I long lined shark fished for years. Did you think professional fisherman toss away a hook every fish? It's not hard to remove a hook from a shark or fish. Use the right size hooks and there's no problem or, don't bother fishing if you can't do the responsible thing.

I understand why some of you are ‘worried about the hook’, but depending on where it’s hooked it’s safer for both the fish and the fisherman to cut the hook. In a matter of a couple days it will rust enough to fallout and eventually dissolve completely. Most fishermen are actively working with conversation efforts because we care about the animals and want them to be enjoyed by many generations to come. So try not passing judgment without doing a little research.

Ok I'm going to set the record straight for anyone who thinks they know about fishing but still think that the shark will die from the hook 1) THE SHARK WONT DIE! The hook is designed to rust out in a short amount of time especially in salt water, the rust will not cause the shark to get sick sharks have an extremely strong immune system 2) the shark does not feel any pain most of their nerves are centered around the snout but the do not send pain signals that the sharks brain will respond to 3) a hook is not the worst thing to happen to a shark, sharks eat all kind of weird stuff from tires to car tags once even a suit of armor and the shark went on living a long full life So no all Robert did was give the shark back it's life along with it's own lip ring for a while and he was smart not to risk his hand for the hook... Though he was nuts to be out there by himself like that

ok people freaking out over the hook left in read the description! it was safer for the fish and him to cut the line, he couldn't get the hook out, also, it was a normal steel hook, not stainless steel. Too many folk not reading the description but also, some totally daft comments. Hooks do not dissolve or rust out in a day or two, especially a dirty great big hook like that. Assuming the tissue around the hook remained viable it would take maybe a year or more for corrosion to cause it to break up sufficiently to come free. Likewise it is ignorant bunkum to state that Sharks feel no pain - they do not have the same neuro-physiological or cognitive reactions to pain as humans but have been shown to react to pain stimuli - The jury is still out. Regardless, it’s not good to release an apex predator with a dirty great hook in its mouth for the next six to twelve months. When all said, read the description folks because this fact is acknowledged, along with future actions for avoidance - ultimately, it’s no biggie!!
@hooter0055
@hooter0055 3 жыл бұрын
Let me address your concerns. 1. No one means they will rust or dissolve completely. But it plenty of studies have shown that the hook will weaken enough, or soften the area around it enough to come out in around 24 hours. It doesn't take much for a hook to rust and FAIL so that it shaking it or eating will break it free. But in salt water, it isn't years. It's more like days to weeks depending on the hook. 2. It is also an ignorant bumpking to not look into what this means. No one means the sharks don't feel any pain at all. But it HAS been proven that the receptors around their mouths are extremely INsensitive, meaning they don't feel much pain or maybe any. They have to eat spiny fish. They have evolved to allow them to not hurt everytime they eat. 3. Regardless, it is not good to go grabbing at an apex predators mouth, where a quick shake could mean you lose fingers or injure yourself while out 500 yards from shore.

Don't worry about the hook. Have you ever caught a fish with a hook in it's mouth?? Most likely not, and here's why. Both fresh and salt water fish (sharks too) have very acidic blood. Acidic enough to dissolve a hook anywhere on it's body within 1 or 2 days. The shark will be fine.

John Kramer +schleykov Ya know, if you did some research instead of making dumb ass comments you'd know this is a fact!! Why, because the same exact thing occurs in the Great Lakes, IN WHICH ARE FRESH WATER LAKES!! . Brainless!! . "QUOTE" All fish have a built in mechanism that will help them survive a hook. The larger the fish, the better the mechanism. Their body fluids contain a substance that can literally dissolve a hook within a matter of days. I have caught a number of large fish wherein an imprint of a hook can be seen inside their mouth cavity. The hook is gone - dissolved - but the outline is still there. I’ve cleaned fish and found the same thing in their stomach lining. Biologists I have interviewed in the past have provided me with data indicating the high acid content that dissolves the hook. saltfishing.about.com/od/catchandrelease/a/aa040630a.htm www.publish.csiro.au/nid/126/paper/MF96108.htm If a fish is throat hooked, cut the line - Hooks can be dissolved by the stomach acids in the fish northernwilderness.net/fishing

To everybody saying he is a bad guy for leaving a hook on its mouth. You don't know anything about fishing . It was clearly a hook that will rust away in the salt water and fall out. And the salt water will kill bacteria from the hook and stop bleeding. Also if he kept trying to get the hook out of its mouth their was a pretty big chance the shark would have died from being out of the water for to long.

The hook was cut which is obviously less than ideal but the description says why. It wasnt that big of a deal regardless the hook would have corroded or been shaken out. When you catch and realise a fish you leave it with a flesh wound that could lead to infection/death but I'm sure no of u moaning carry fish care gel to put on it. I bet you cry yourself to sleep thinking of a time you snapped off and how that poor fish was left incapacitated?

Robert Field here in Florida new regulations on shark fishing just went into affect for land based shark fishing. It is now illegal to remove the shark from the water. You are required to have bolt cutters to cut the hook off or cut the line to the best of your ability for your safety and the sharks safety. The regulations aren't to much different than catching them on the ocean. This is for all of the misinformed individuals. Keep catching and releasing. Fishing is fun.

I'm not bashing your decision to leave the hook in, we all make quick decisions when there's rows of teeth involved and a short time frame to keep em alive, but this shark looked small enough to induce tonic immobility from the kayak to aid in the removal process. Rocking them gently back and forth while facing up current should be enough flow to keep them alive long enough to remove the hook with relative ease. Definitely always have a buddy with ya to make it even easier. I did read the description and saw you have revised your tactics to ensure this doesn't happen in the future, but Murphy's law is always in play so you never know when tonic immobility may just come in handy. ✌

I don´t know the source but found this. I understand your situation you was in and had to make a decisions but good to know for everyone if this is the fact. "John Foster, Recreational Fisheries Coordinator for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, studied striped bass at Chesapeake Bay. His researchers held throat-hooked stripers between 16- and 28-inches long for observation in half-strength seawater so that hooks had ample opportunity to rust away. Size 1/0 and 2/0 stainless steel, bronzed, nickel, tin and tin-cadmium hooks were hooked in the top of each fish's esophagus, with an 18-inch length of line connected to the hook. After four months, 78 percent of the hooks were still imbedded. Cadmium coated hooks poisoned 20 percent of the fish, and production of these hooks has been stopped. Bronzed hooks were less likely (70%) to be retained than tin-cadmium (80%), nickel (83%), or stainless steel (100%) hooks. In a second test, the line was clipped at the eye of the hook, as advised by most existing C&R guides. One-hundred percent of the stainless hooks were again retained, while 56 percent of tin, 76 percent of bronze, 84 percent of tin-cadmium, and 88 percent of nickel hooks remained. Fish mortality was greater when all line was trimmed. Foster theorized that the lengths of line hanging from a fish's mouth kept the hook-shank flat against the side of the esophagus and allowed food to pass. Without the line, food could move the hook and close the throat. Hooks rusted slowly in stages, and the bend and barb became smaller very gradually. Stripers formed scar tissue around imbedded hook points, a typical reaction of body tissue to foreign matter. Foster noted, however, that once the tough scar tissue formed, hooks became more, not less, difficult to remove. Months after fish were hooked, infections sometimes developed around points, causing some deaths. Based on his research, Foster recommended anglers carefully remove even deeply imbedded hooks. If the hook can not be removed, then it seems better to leave about 18 inches of line attached. Perhaps, someday, these findings will reach C&R anglers, the biologists who are researching C&R and publish C&R guidelines, and TV anglers who teach by their example. "

As you mentioned, you broke all the rules and put yourself in great danger in so many ways, but I respect the fact you owned it and even posted it hopefully to help others who aren’t as comfortable in a kayak yet not to make the same mistakes, sensibly you were wearing a PFD, that helped you dearly when you ended up in the drink, and thankfully you made it back to shore safely mate. Just something a mate and I do when we’re far out of shore is tether our kayaks together with about 30metres (about 100ft) of rope because as you mentioned the current can make you drift quite quickly and you can very easily lose site of land and become disorientated, and if one of us were to get into trouble at least we’re still connected so we can attempt to go in for the assist if necessary. Where I live we have thee highest concentration of White Pointers on the entire east coast of Australia, and we’ve seen some freakin huge ones out there! The biggest one day about a year ago a approx 4-5metre White was hanging around us for quite some time, and when a shark that’s curious about you is bigger then your kayak by a big margin, it’s both exhilarating and somewhat unnerving also haha Happy fishing my friend

So many keyboard warriors screaming about how he didn't remove the hook haha check the description. Also tbh rather leave a hook in a shark's mouth than anyone risk theirs or the sharks safety more than necessary, anyday. And one more note about that, pretty sure sharks don't have pain receptors in their mouth anyway so they don't even really care it's there, at least from what I've been told. Nevertheless good stuff just found this channel yesterday and I've already watched like 50 or more videos, loving it. "after spending 5 minutes trying to remove the hook with pliers and being unable to get it out, I cut the line so that I didn't keep the fish out of the water any longer. I felt that if I kept trying, the shark would suffocate and die. Luckily they were NOT stainless steel hooks and it has certainly rusted out by now. Since this trip, I now pinch down the barbs on my hooks and have removed the hook from about 15 sharks since this trip. It is all a learning experience and I learned a lot from the mistakes I made on this trip." I've actually been making the same practice on my hooks for quite some time, no barb means yeah it's easier to lose a fish but still we lose equipment fighting these fish all the time and half the time that stuff is jammed in their mouth or throat afterwards for quite some time so the hook coming out a little easier is good for both them in that situation and us when we're trying to remove it when we get it in.
