So my day started out like every other weekend. Out on the water, searching for halibut, and possibly a WSB still hanging around the area. Never found any. Did see a school of bonito so I was trolling for them at the time when all of this madness began. At 1:03 in the video I felt a bump to the back of my kayak and you notice I turn to see what it was. Saw nothing so I looked right. Nothing. Then felt the bump again and turned back to the left to see this hammerhead who looked like he meant business. He hits my kayak 1 more time, which you can clearly see, and thats when I decided I needed to do something about the situation. I knew that the only way I was gonna be in real danger was if I was in the water. And I also knew as long as the shark didn't hit my kayak anymore, there's no way I would be in the water. So I chose to use my paddle to keep him away from my kayak. I had other options. There was a 3" knife in the compartment right next to me. And a rather oversized gaff with a 3 foot handle right behind me. Both of which I considered during the event but I preferred to not seriously hurt the shark if I didn't have to. Theres a lot of people going around saying pretty awful things about this, and I know thats what half of the people online use the internet for anyways, but please save your words for someone who deserves them. Or don't say them at all. Theres more than enough hate in this world already. I was close to a mile from any help and by myself with no boats in the area. If I had been knocked in the water and was splashing around, theres a great chance the shark would have come up and bit me to see if I was food. One good bite from those teeth, that far away from any help, I almost surely would have bled out. So I did what I felt necessary to defend myself. Please don't come on here and tell me how I shouldn't have been in their natural environment. This planet belongs to every living thing on it and we all have the right to go wherever we want. Except maybe not North Korea. I wouldn't recommend that. If we aren't allowed in a predators natural environment then we better all pack up and move into outer space. Because every square inch of this planet is a predators natural environment. Don't tell me hammerheads are mellow and it wouldn't hurt me. Every animal, just like every human, is different. This is a shark that has NEVER, in the 30 years I've lived in this area, been seen here. So who knows what is going through its head. And I didn't wanna find out. I'm just glad that both myself and the shark got out of this with no permanent damage. And yes, I'll probably be back out there fishing in the near future. The ocean is a wild place where wild things can happen. Its a risk you need to accept before you enter the waters. But more importantly, be prepared for. Never assume things are gonna go the way you expect out there because your plans can be changed at any minute. We must respect the ocean and share the ocean. Its not ours. Its not theirs. Its all of ours and we all depend on its health for our survival. To use this video in a commercial player or broadcast, please email licensing@storyful.com.

Great for lakes. I would never take one in the ocean for this reason. Even though it’s extremely unlikely that I’m going to be attacked and killed by a shark it’s things like this alone that would prevent me from doing it!

@@lynth OMG you are tooooooo funny with that hilarious reply! 🤣 * Unlike the situation the gentleman in the yellow kayak experienced which wasn't the least bit funny. Grew up on the water on the east coast of Florida and have never ever ever ever seen any shark act so aggressively. And the kayaker gentleman handled the situation incredibly well in such a manner that he saved his own life repeatedly. To me the most interesting thing was that the shark did not go to the bait at the other end of the rod and reel combination, but instead was targeting a bigger prize. And the gentleman on the kayak really kept his cool and luckily - successfully played 'whack a shark' very accurately. Was also incredible to me that the shark was so persistent all the way into the shoreline. And kind of had me wondering if the gentlemen's bait box might have been leaking out into the water. Thanks God the gentleman made it back to shore safely! 🙏

tonepoet Don't let this stop you. He provoked the shark by smashing it in the face with a paddle. It was most likely hust checking out what the long orange thing splashing about in the water was. I really like and agree with what you wrote in the description. There's only been (according to Wikipedia haha) 17 recorded cases of hammerhead attacks on humans and they become very defensive when provoked, but I think in this case you did what needed to be done to prevent the sharks curiosity/defensiveness/agressiveness leading to injury. A very rational dude :)

@RMR1

@@FlowceanSoul Absolutely right. That shark could have dumped him in the ocean anytime he wanted to. The vast majority of sharks want nothing to do with us, which is why attacks are so rare. And when they do interact with us, it's almost always out of curiosity or mistaken identity. Most people swimming off Cape Cod or the southeast coast of Florida or the other hot spots don't realize how often they're sharing the immediate vicinity with sharks -- sometimes within 100 yards or less. The fact that they almost never make themselves known -- let alone attack us -- shows how they'd rather steer clear of us 99% of the time.
@FlowceanSoul
@FlowceanSoul 2 жыл бұрын
@@RMR1 Exactly! There’s a channel on here called TheMalibuArtist and they do drone footage of sharks, it’s SO interesting to see just how many sharks are just hanging out around us or coming over to check us out and just swimming away. It’s crazy how easily they can just go by invisible to us even when they’re literally right under our noses! He even filmed an incident where a surfer paddled RIGHT over a shark, looks like he even touched it, and the shark just kept going on with his business.

But the last time we rode there we had a run in with a 10foot bull shark who like to bunk into the side of the ski and circle us just off the Hula Bay Club islands there. He was relentless and persistent.He scared the crap out of us. That day i can say we were glad we had the turbo skis to high tail it out of there and back to picnic island and not ride there again..Took a year to get the wife back on the skis somewhere else.. That channel by the Gandy bridge is deep and no joke...Sharks come in there to breed certain times the year. How Kayakers fish out there is nut's.
