Loving your roadtrip so far. I noticed with the hobie you adjust your direction when fighting a fish, without pedaling (cycling?), is that how they work? You can steer with just the pull of the fish? Hobie is out of my price range but rigging up a rudder isn't... that seemed really effective.
@YakFishField7 жыл бұрын
+Robert Jones definitely man, the rudder doesn't know if I'm pedaling or not. If the fish runs left, I move my rudder left and it'll help my boat turn towards the fish. Whenever possible with a big fish you want your rod towards the front of the boat. When they get sideways on you, that's when they can flip you.

Another great episode. Are you wearing the NRS sidwinder dry bibs? If so... what jacket do you have on over? Also... would you feel confident in that gear in those types of temps if you went in? Thanks for the episodes!
@YakFishField7 жыл бұрын
+beardisauce 1 I am wearing the Sidewinder Bibs and I love em. That's the NRS High Tide jacket over it. It's not an ideal setup for going in. The Sidewinders have several features that slow the entry of water into them, but they will fill up with water before too long. If I was out there alone, I'd feel much safer in an actual dry suit. But with a handful of friends with me and knowing my limits, I felt confident that if I were to go in, I'd be able to get out alright. The relief zipper makes me feel a lot better too, allowing me to drain half the water out of them should I fall in and they fill up. Many people think waders will pull you to the bottom if they fill up. That's false, water is neutrally buoyant. They just make it a lot harder to get OUT of the water with all that extra weight.
@beardisauce18707 жыл бұрын
thanks for the reply Robert. One more question if you have some time... have you ever tried the NRS Men's Freefall Dry Pants? if so... would they along with the booties work as waders? looking for something for winter stealhead that will keep me dry in the kayak but work as waders when i want to get out of the boat. The sidewinder bibs are just to expensive. Thanks for your time Robert. Ive learned a ton watching your videos.

+Denver Deschenes those fish are a total blast man! I've heard of the worms trick, do you put em in a little mesh thing like panty hose to get em on the hook?
@dog99707 жыл бұрын
Robert Field never seen that done, maybe a question on what was in the hose before being turning into a bait bag😂. The worms just get stuck with the hook and stacked up to make a ball. Some people use treble hooks to hold more bait. Couple guys on the river actually prep cubes of chicken breast and let it spoil. The more stink the better but my luck I’d end poisoned using that for bait. I’m changing gears now and preparing for Mexico and knocking the new off the Big Game Prowler. Can’t wait!! Happy Bday!

Sweet video man, I used to do alot of fishing near there as a kid... mainly salmon though, but makes me want to take another trip out there! Out of curiosity who makes your pink rod? I love how the eyes wrap around to the bottom. Seems like it would be good for jigging, can be annoying at times with a standard bait casting rod.
@YakFishField7 жыл бұрын
It's an awesome area! The rod is actually red, but it's a custom build by a guy named Mark Crouse. The guides are acid wrapped or spiral wrapped, you can google it for the advantages. I much prefer it to conventional wraps.

Not to be a hater, but remember it is illegal to remove an oversized (over 54") sturgeon from the water in Oregon and WA. Not the best for photo ops but as long as you are publishing video's on the internet, I would keep this in mind. Not sure if any of your fish were that big. Also, Rob, bring an anchor! We are going to get kicked out of the basin if everybody keeps pissing off the CG and the folks who work in the harbor by lazily hanging on to their gear. Otherwise great video.

I live in the Seattle Puget Sound area and just got my Outback fitted with the latest and greatest "stuff" to fish for Pacific Salmon starting July of this year. All the expense included saftey gear including a full body Dry Suit called "Shift" from Stholquist because of how cold the water is even during the summer. Combined with heavy currents, if and when I flip my Outback for the first time I know I'll be prepared (I am 6'4"/260lbs). Because of my size and the Outback, I know I'll be in the water at some point. Getting back into the Kayak and staying dry with layering has been all thought out, I am prepared. But, the 99% of the other times I'll be high and dry trolling in the summer sun overheating in the dry suit. I can cut back on the layering but with the wrist and neck gaskets and hot sun, I know I'll have no choice but to unzip the top half of my Dry Suit which will probably be the time I take a dip in that cold water only to fil up my drysuit.Moving up to a PA12 is not an option, so maybe my only other option/tradeoff is to buy a two piece dru suit so at least my bottom half will be dry if I take dip? I don't want to become another kayak cold water stastiic as I've seen in the waters in the Pacific Northwest but I want to enjoy my time on the water without heat stroke as well. Thougts?

Actually Robert, sturgeon are a closer relative to the shark. As like Sharks and Rays they have no bones, only cartilage, and you can't find a better eating fish. I use to fish for them out of my 12 foot aluminum boat by the Exxon refinery mud flats in the Sacramento river back in the 60's 70's and 80's before I left California. The biggest I landed was a baby 85 pounder 5'6'' long that took me on a Nantuket slay ride for miles before it tired enough for me to get my rope through it's mouth and gills and tied to my boat..... From Exxon at Pacheco creek down to the Banica bridge, across to the Mothball Fleet and back over to the Navy base at Port Chicago and back across to the fleet again for over an hour....😱😋 After that I laminated a $20 bill to make it waterproof and keep me from spending it so if I hooked up with 1 of the big boys in those waters and it towed me to San Francisco I could buy enough gas to get back to my truck to get home..... I've seen them better than 8 foot long and 400 pounds, but I know there are fish there 10 to 12 foot and over 1,000 lbs.😋 It's a wonder that I survived my youth fishing alone for fish like that in that little aluminum and very (SINKABLE) boat 😜 But oh did I have some fun 😎👍😎🐬 I don't know if you ever got to eat one before Fish&Game restricted them so much, but they are the best tasting fish in any of California's waters and not a bone in it's body, just like a Shark 😋Mmm good❗👍❗🐬
@YakFishField4 жыл бұрын
Never got a chance to eat one, but I hear they’re delicious
@YakFishField4 жыл бұрын
Never got a chance to eat one, but I hear they’re delicious
@pffear4 жыл бұрын
@@YakFishField Absolutely, best eating fresh water fish there is, and zero bones...... When you clean them you pull the spinal cord out leaving the cartilage casing after you skin them and then cross cut them into steaks 1/2 inch thick and the meat turns snow white and flaky in the pan with 3 little pieces of cartilage and the rest just meat....Mmmmm good❗‼❗👍😋 Unfortunately they are so regulated these days, to catch a keeper is next to impossible from what I hear..... And the mercury is so bad in the Sacramento river that I guess they aren't safe to eat now.... Although you can still eat the sturgeon you catch up in Alaska. Anyway, love the show....🐟😋🐡

Let me know if you ever want some info for some species hunting here in Canada. We got crazy places to explore, last spring I was 700km's from the nearest civilization catching monster lake and speckled trout!
@YakFishField7 жыл бұрын
I definitely want to do a #FieldTrips: Canada soon. Maybe in the summer. Where are some good places to put on my list for different species?
@AwesomeFishable7 жыл бұрын
Sooo many haha, it's a big country. Depends if you wanna deal with heading north for a true wilderness Canadian experience or stay more in the southern region. There are many more species in the south but you won't get the rugged feel of being completely isolated. Here in QC we have roads that can bring you way up (talking 2000km to the middle of nowhere) thanks to our hydro-power system.
@AwesomeFishable7 жыл бұрын
That being said, ''south'' can still be pretty far north here. Winnipeg for giant channel cats, giant musky in the Ottawa or St-Lawrence river. Gotta get Lake Trout and Speckled Trout in there somehow. Big walleye and pike too. For a crazy adventure road trip on the most remote giant bodies of water, look up ''Route Trans-Taiga'' in northern QC. 4 species dominate the land there, and they all get big. Northern Pike, Walleye, Speckled and Lake Trout. If you want details on specific spots or species find me on facebook or message me or something, I've caught 69 different species here and always looking for more!

Awesome what your catching in a kayak. Could I suggest some C&R training regarding fish survival? Really not fair to the fish to have to "Pose" for the camera while a 2 minute or longer fish species history lesson given........fish are suffocating during that process............not cool at all. And, is hard to watch!
