thanks Paul, def a fun day out there, still a lot of porgies and seabss with the warmer water temps...I really hope the wind lines up better in Novemeber, we'll see!

Love your underwater video. Word of advise, don't touch the drag when a fish hits. If you are fishing for blackfish, you will need to get it up 10ft+ before playing with the drag and let it run. The initial fight/pull is the most crucial and you need to get it OFF the rock. Tight drag on that. Secondly, if scup are within the blackfish, use a whole crab, small ones if you have, cut or leave the leg, hook through one leg socket and out the belly. Cut the corners of the crab so it gets some scents in the water. That way only bigger seabass or tog can only chew the whole crab.

Great tips! I think this is very good advice, going to do this next time I'm out there...especially when i'm in an area that potentially has bigger blackfish those things will make a huge difference I think

What's up Peter ? Damn another season and we didn't connect. Bro you're definitely upping your fishing skills. Hopefully next year we'll see each other on the water. What's the price on green craps?
@PeterRanieriII2 ай бұрын
YOooo KB! its gunna happen man, lol thanks just love it too much, always learning every trip! I typically pay $35 for a quarter bushel at my local tackle shop and that last me 2 weekends. Recently my friend was able to get me a whole bushel so I'm packed to the gills with crab right now lol wish I could send you some

Nice catch, what’s the blue bucket at the front for?
@PeterRanieriII3 ай бұрын
thanks, lol yeah I meant to leave that bucket in the car but forgot. Its sole purpose is to just transport the crabs in my car so that the wet burlap bag isn't touching the floor

What general area of LI Sound are you fishing? Western? Central? Eastern? LI shore? Connecticut shore? Out of so-and-so harbor? Just generally.
@PeterRanieriII2 ай бұрын
@@charlesmurray1220 in this video I’m in the western sound. Im pretty much always fishing the NY side of the sound. I try to stay away from the harbors since they have more boat traffic so I’m typically launching from residential only beaches or public beaches on the northshore

lol it was ok, for some reason the meat just seemed a little soft (which is not my favorite texture for fish). the taste was good though, very mild flavor

@PeterRanieriII2 ай бұрын
lol yeah it’s a really confusing way they show it, doesn’t make much sense to me why it’s closed for a very short time. Or that there’s a creel limit for the ugly things lol but I guess they play some sort of role in the ecosystem

Is a fluorocarbon leader necessary for blackfish or would a monofilament leader work as well?
@PeterRanieriII2 ай бұрын
@@NorthShore1 I did quite a bit of testing on abrasion resistance and knot strength of mono vs fluoro and found the fluoro can actually be less abrasion resistant to sharp structure than mono and has less knot strength. Per my underwater videos my observation is blackfish are not line shy they are just curious. They study the bait and don’t care what’s connected to it. Lastly Mono is much cheaper… so in my opinion fluorocarbon is a complete waste of money for blackfishing.
@NorthShore12 ай бұрын
@@PeterRanieriII Thanks. I use a mono leader as well. Was wondering if I was making a mistake. I feel better about it now
@PeterRanieriII2 ай бұрын
@ I haven’t used fluorocarbon leader in years. I’d say blackfishing is probably 75% the spot, the rest is your gear and timing the bite. Focus your time on finding good spots 👍🤙
