Kayak Instruction - Reading the River

Learn how to kayak! In this installation of the River Guide Series I break down and detail the ins and outs of learning how to read the river. I introduce several concepts and terms to include Finding the V, Boat Angle and Boat Speed. One of the best ways to get kayaking instruction is to be on the water with an experienced instructor. Since that is not always possible, here are a few tips and techniques that will make you a better kayaker. Come along as we paddle down the Union Bridge to Chicken Bridge section of the Haw River at 2.5' on the gauge. Went kayaking for my very first time today, and they were small rapids that I encountered at a state park, but I love it! And I learned the first few rocks really quick, to watch the water and guided myself to the smooth water. When I was coming up on rocks I had missed, I knew I had to go straight on rather than be sideways if I were to hit. Have much to learn! But I taught myself some basics today. Never rolled or fell into the water so that was a plus, but I know that’s not the norm for real kayaking. I had a blast! Tired after a 10 mile trip I’m not used to doing, but hooked now. So much fun and I want to learn and get better. Thanks for the video

Brother, I hit this section solo Sunday. I’m sore all over still. First time on this leg. Out fishing in my Native Ultimate. The piton at 7:45 nailed me. Felt like I hit a parked truck. I’m sore all over. Stayed upright thanks to your videos and a sheer will to live. Good practice but I need to learn more. Midget Falls was hairy too. I had a good route for the first section then I noticed the remaining hell. I flipped back to some things you said, looked for the bulk of the out flow, I was already committed and said well “if Darwin is taking me out, let it be epic.” Two weeks ago I hit Chicken to Bynum. I broached hard at one of the sections above Final Solution. Thinking I should get a more nimble yak to learn this river and build some skills. I grew up on it. Just never tried tackling these tougher sections. How can I find a mentor to help get started finding the right boat and building better skills?

Yes, the Ultimates are not known for their nimbleness...lol. That pontoon style hull is made for initial stability (feeling very stable on flat water). A traditional hull shape would be best, the less keel and more rocker the better! Dagger Axis is a neat boat.

I'd like more information about paddling upriver against the current. The rivers I kayak on don't have currents as strong as in this video, so I spend most of my time battling upriver. Any tips for paddling UP white water? River is really low right now and we've been able to get a mile or so up river past 2 or 3 real small features just paddling like mad. This video helped, I think we were going up the V and that was hard.lol

Yes! speed. speed. speed. The faster your boat is, the easier attaining a river is. The formula for increasing speed is a longer and thinner kayak. If you are in whitewater scenarios, consider a 12 race boat such as a LL Stinger or a Pyranha 12'r or a Dagger Green boat or a Jackson Karma UL...As far as technique goes, it is a case of using the current and the boat to your advantage. Sometimes, you just need to gun it up the v. However, in many cases you are going to want to attain in the eddy lines, build speed and ferry across a feature from one side to the other. It is all about strategy. You can plot a course and ferry upstream from side to side in the current in the same way a switch back on a steep trail works. Hope that helps! It is great exercise!!

Great information on the outflow V. It looks like all of you guys are in 14' kayaks. I currently use a 10' Old Town Vapor and a 10' Perception Sunrise and kayak mainly on flat waters here in the Piedmont of NC such as the Pee Dee, the Rocky River, Uwharrie River, and Lumber River. I am ready to take my game to the next level. What kind of kayak and length would you recommend? I am looking to expand my horizons to include the French Broad and the New River and the like. Any suggestions or input is greatly appreciated. I thoroughly enjoy your channel and respect your opinion.

Good deal Anthony! If you plan to do the class 3 and 4 sections of those rivers, then I would always recommend a whitewater boat. If you are looking to do longer trips like we do which may happen to include some big water, then a 14' skirted boat with a lot of rocker is the name of the game. The Necky Zoar, Tsunami 145, things like that might work. Of course, my favorite boat for all of that is the Prijon Yukon Expedition. They are hard to find as they are no longer made. The longer boats will greatly increase your speed, but unless you have a keel-less boat like the Yukon, you are going to suffer in maneuverability when compared to your shorter boats. Hope that helps!

What class was this river videoed? Class I? We just did an Alaska class one that turned into class 2+ as water was a 7 instead of the normal 4. We got dumped (individual lake kayaks) two turns into the class change and had to abort the float. Boast are still on the riverbank awaiting extraction. Now im watching what I should have before the trip!

It can be a fine line. If the water is too tight and technical, the longer, keeled boats will start having more and more trouble. The boat I use is a Prijon Yukon Expedition. It does not have a keel and thus is much more maneuverable. A whitewater kayak is the best by far in moving water...

Maybe you stated this but I really don’t think this river in this video is class 1. Maybe class 2-3? I’ve done a lot of class 1 in Southeast Missouri on the Current River, Meremac etc and there are nowhere near this many rock hazards.

20+ years ago I was told never to stop paddling in a situation when you can loose balance - like going down a rapid! Why? Because a paddle in water gives you an extra support point in case of trouble. I use this advice ever since - keep the bloody blade in water! I just can't watch when you flow through rapids with paddle up - what if there is a rock in the middle of a rapid you did not notice?

Why did ur son flip ,my reading was he was side ways on the edge of an eddie meaning half his boat was in downward flow and the other half was in the upward flow which the hydraulics built up pressures on both sides flipping it
