I know. The storage on a kayak is limited, and he chose alcohol with an ABV too low to act as a flotation device. That set the stage for failure in an event that he needed to rescue the sinking brewskies while doublefisting the survivors before saving himself. Perhaps he was counting on the watered-down beers to bloat him up, and miscalculated the net negative flotation effect of piss retention.

@@OGitGirlJess Not dieing in water is literally a factor of A) Get your mouth above water one time, and B) Inflate your lungs completely, so that you can C) Float calmly and figure out how to unfuck your situation. Granted, I've seen videos of refugees that seem to not understand this, even though every human is literally born with a "Dive reflex (nose and throat closes without command, to prevent breathing water)" and a rudimentary "Doggy Paddle" swimming technique. They just... kinda... doggypaddle on their side, with their heads below water. It's really weird. I would think that anyone that kayaks would have the prerequisites of not being afraid of water, and being able to successfully doggypaddle nailed down though. The situation, as presented, is fishy.

@@buckstarchaser2376 Well yes I understand your point here completely. And, yes you’re pretty much spot on. Humans like dogs are born with an instinctive drive in them to survive. “Fight or flight”, “sink or swim”, the latter being literal. However, we do see people drown. After working many, many years as a life guard and after studying far more than my share of human behavior patterns through sociology, psychology, psychiatry, and human pathology courses in both undergrad and grad school I can tell you that the human brain is so damn complex and so deeply wired that we can not trust it to always do the right thing in the right situations. It’s crazy because it (our brain) ABSOLUTELY knows the right thing to do but at the exact moment of impact (the big moment that so much is riding on) it diverts and sends you full force ahead in to another direction. It’s just like you said about refugees who almost look like they just jump in the water and give up. It’s the same thing when a baby drowns in a tub that has 1/2 an inch of water in it. With the refugee; when the moment they’ve been waiting for their whole life finally presents itself and the two choices are A. Swim like you’ve never swam before, get to the other side of this river, you already have a big head start on them & once you make it you will be free for life or B. Do nothing like always before and remain a captive in your own land. Sooooooo they jump in to the water and every rational bone in their body packs up in to a duffle bag like “Welp, I’m out, been nice knowing you!” They are completely and irrationally overcome by fear and all of their hopes and dreams go completely out of the window because all they can think about is how damn scary this water they are submerged in is! The same water they have spent their whole life playing in, fishing in, swimming in since age 3 or 4. Same thing with a baby in a bath tub with hardly any water. They will sit there all day & laugh & think it’s funny to stick their head under then come back up but as soon as mommy turns her back for one second and they don’t have an audience they completely forget what they were doing that made everyone laugh. They forget that their supposed to raise their head up, and far too often they die or suffer severe brain damage because of ridiculous incidents just like this. 😔💔😔

For many people that have never been in trouble with the Police they do not realise that they will be a bunch of duplicitous, lying aholes to get a confession. "We just like you to come down to the station for a chat and give us your side of the story", "yeah don't worry you aren't in trouble we just want to ask you a few questions so we can, clear things up, no you don't need a lawyer"... trust me never speak to the Police without a lawyer no matter how innocent you are because they have targets to hit and many of them aren't looking for the truth they are looking for a suspect and a case they can prosecute. The real bad apples will withhold evidence or even tamper with it to get a conviction. In the eyes of the Police I don't think the adage is "innocent until proven guilty" and more well "everyone is guilty of something".

I've kayaked hundreds of times in my life. The drain plug does not make any difference. If you are in a storm and waves are getting into your kayak, the drain hole is on the top of the kayak it will not cause the water to drain. That isn't what it is there for. Its only to drain the kayak by holding it up when you are on land. It doesn't function to drain the kayak while you are sitting in it. The amount of water coming in from waves is magnitudes higher than any water that could get into the drain hole. Whether the paddle floats or not would not save you from drowning in a bad storm, if you don't know how to swim, or if you are intoxicated. I agree with Dr Grande that this was an accident, not a murder. Even if the woman was capable of saving him from drowning, failing to do so would not be murder. She could have been too scared or concerned with her own survival to do anything to help him. It would be like being charged with murder because you didn't fight a bear to save someone else from getting eaten. The investigators did the wrong thing and coerced her into a false confession under the stress and manipulation of eleven hours of anguished interrogation. The judge did the wrong thing by considering her guilty based on her personality and not any credible evidence. Justice was not served in this case.

It does seem manipulative what the whites woman is doing. But when someone seems to be having a psychotic episode maybe it’s worthwhile to ask “what am I hearing her say”. I think she is saying that she is having her life destroyed and was falsely accused and verbally abused with a staging and framing game and it is terrorism to be filmed with someone who is willing to film and play the victim after provoking and behaving in an angry and threatening way. The black woman excuses this blatant in your face filming and hostile commentary by saying that she is dealing with racist police and systemic racism. This seems like a political move and an excuse and justification for very extreme behavior. She also does snot seem to self reflect or to maintain reflective functioning. The white woman seems to have been from the beginning an object in her fantasy drama. Like a spoiled child she screams “abuse!” And directs hatred and abuse at the white woman for shopping next to her for panties. She seems to believe this is wrong and yet she does not engage in a discussion about the original and central point. Everyone doesn’t go by this rule and it seems to be a rule that may be moving the goal posts or double standards. It gives perceptions of Harrassment and discrimination to some people. She plays the victim and makes a scene and then when the white woman calls for security she pulls a camera and flips the script. Or did the white woman truly behave in the aggressive or rude behavior she claims she did? The whites woman, now terrified she is going to be destructively defamed, instinctively tries to block the phone recording. This is distorted into an “assault” with really catty taunting. At the same time you can identify with the black woman and see that the whites woman seems to feel entitled to physically aggress. And the fact she is being filmed now shows her up for that attitude. It could be the black woman is parenting the white woman in a way she has not been parented and does not kow tow to the sense of entitlement the white woman seems to have. The white woman could also be playing mentally ill with an attitude of win lose in a zero sum game. Both may have a history of confusing and frustrating experiences that inform their present behavior. It is a shame they cannot talk things out like mature adults. Neither one maintains functional and mature behavior. They seem to have different rules and are unable to share their beliefs in any kind of mutual dialogue. Both are going to extremes in their thinking and behavior and communication. Both could benefit from anger management and communication education. It is possible the black woman is the most prejudiced. She is assuming that she will not get a fair shake and that she is dealing with evil racist monsters. This attitude can make a person very hypersensitive and rigid in her approach.

One of the first rules of kayaking: ALWAYS wear a life jacket! It would be really hard to prove that anyone killed him because the kayaking mistakes mentioned have been made by alot of people, including leaving the drain plug out. Would be interesting to know what kind of kayak he was in. Certain kayaks are not meant for certain situations.

Also, what they're describing here is NOT a drain plug, which opens to the inside of the kayak's hull and it would be impossible to run a strap through to tie to your roof rack. What they're describing are plugs that go through the kayak but because they don't open into the hull, make no difference to the buoyancy. These holes are to put the bars from a trolly through. I don't bother with these plugs.

Most police officers will say it's a calm killer doing a series of cart wheels...and would do anything to prove they were right. 🥴 !!! I love what you've done to your studio. Another amazing and informative analysis Dr. G! I think this is my new favorite video of yours! I remember this case: I watched it on network TV and I recall truly believing in Angelika's innocence. I agree with your input, I think culture differences and perhaps language barrier, too, had a lot to do with Angelika's false confession. I'm so happy to hear that she is out of prison. I hope she is doing well 💞. Love you Dr. Grande and love your channel and content. *So lemme ask you this, please. I like kayaking at times, but am not super experienced. Many kayaks I have used have had so much foam inside them, that they wouldn't sink even if overturned and filled with water. I know there are many made differently, but do you think one could drown easily if they had hold of a kayak? His cause of death was drowning, not hypothermia. This makes me wonder...(also, thank you for your input!)*

If you've done any kayaking before, I think you can see that it would be pretty difficult to use it as an element of a sabotage/murder without some really careful planning and a bunch of lucky factors. In many rivers it's possible to swim to the shore if something goes wrong with your kayak and you begin taking on water (unless you're in open water, which they weren't). It's also unlikely that a woman could overpower a male and grab his paddle from him, and this isn't even a reliable way of causing someone to sink, they might just continue to float and eventually ground themselves. I wonder if the guy was drinking before kayaking.
