I think it's rare because she also told him to make up a story and stick with it. She knew it was him. There was no other explanation for his bloody jeans. She had no empathy for this girl. In other cases some parents don't literally wash all the bloody clothing so they remain hopeful

I personally feel it’s all getting out of hand. If one denies, as a parent, you’re truly causing more harm then good, & you are not a “ cool parent”, that’s letting your own child down. My parents did a good job but they never monitored my internet use (this was late 90’s, early 2000’s.) I remember talking to older dudes via AOL chat rooms. When Aiden posted “has anyone seen Tristan”? After he murdered her, it indicates not only no remorse, but boasting this deeply disturbing behavior is taunting the parents and law enforcement and indicates a deeply disturbed individual with no empathy. In addition, when told Tristan was missing/murdered he said “how’s that my problem”? Clearly this young man is a danger to society. He is broken! Cases like this are not fixable! Therapy and medications will not make him a decent human who is fit for functioning safely in society. Also, anyone who has claimed responsibility Ned’s to have swift, stern consequences! The precedent needs to be set that this is no joking matter. Finally, the mother should be charged, have a very steep fine and face potential prison time as well! Aiden needs to be shown just how much it is HIS problem and he should never have the freedom to harm again. If he does, he will. He’s broken beyond repair. He posted a selfie of himself in the cop car with some sort of peace sign. He deserves to be tried as an adult and should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.

And so many commenting here that he is a child, mentally ill and needs help instead of life in prison because he had a rough childhood. I wonder how many of these same people would want him living beside their teenage daughter if he was released! I have dealt with a lot of mentally ill people in my career (now retired) and I saw over and over how many diagnosed with mental illness will be stabilized with medication. The problem is, many of those same individuals will stop taking that medication after a very short time and their mental state once again deteriorates. It's a revolving door. I'm in no way saying Aiden is mentally ill as this may just be an attempt to prepare a defense for him. The actions of Aiden and his parents appear that none of them have any empathy, yet Aiden knew what he was doing was wrong. But either way, mentally ill or not, I wouldn't want to be anywhere near him if he is ever released.

I taught high school for thirty years and it was so easy to spot the kids who had parenting and those that didn't. I've told many parents when their teens get mad at them about curfews, video game and phone restrictions, etc. that it means, as parents, they are doing a great job.

This kid's problematic behavior was well known to the school officials and whenever he was in trouble, he'd be suspended and kept home with his inept parents. Child abuse history may come up later as well, as it seems his bio father went to prison for child abuse. Our system has to be more proactive on all fronts, especially with the current mental health crisis we're witnessing in the young. I live where this happened.

I’ve followed this on local news as it happened close to where I live. Aiden Fucci’s father had a long rap sheet including battery, being arrested at one time for engaging in sexual activity with a minor and another for child abuse, injury, and neglect. Dr. Grande I agree with you about staying on top of what your teenager is doing. It was exhausting. I only had 2 kids 3 years apart, but we had to monitor what was going on. They still managed to get in trouble at times. They made it into adulthood in one piece without a criminal record and went to college, graduated college and are responsible adults that take care of their families. So It was worth it and it was a lot of work as parents. We were not their friends and we had no trouble telling them what was right and what was wrong. They managed to like us later on.....

But you are correct, you cannot be a teenagers “buddy.” You can let your child know that they can bring anything to you, no subject is off limits. For quite a number of years she wanted to stay up all night and sleep all day!! Boy, those were tough years!! When she got ready to be on her own I asked her to tell me what I did right and what I did wrong, and to be honest about it. She said, “You taught me the difference between right and wrong, and you were a little bit too strict.” I figured every 18 year old thinks their parents were “too strict.” When she had children she called me up one day and said: “MOM! This case is exceedingly disturbing. Firstly, the fact that she was only 13 and the he is 14, and second the manner of death- 114 stab wounds! That’s an indication of tremendous brutality and rage. In a way a feel bad seeing a 14 year old being charged as an adult. However if he is indeed the perpetrator, as it appears to be, he is a undoubtedly a danger to society and needs to be charged accordingly. I think you are absolutely right regarding supervision. What about the "girlfriend" that stayed with Aiden through MULTIPLE incidents where he pretended to slit her throat? What internal messages about her value/lack of value is she carrying at only 13 or 14 years old? Girls need to have their self value nurtured and learn VERY early that it is never okay for a boy to disrespect, threaten, or inflict violence on them. Best lesson I ever learned from my mom was essentially "one strike and they're out". I learned she had broken off her first engagement at 20 when her fiance slapped her during an argument. She said he begged, cried, sent flowers, even plead with her father to help, etc., but she NEVER took him back. She forgave him in her heart and said he never showed any other violent tendencies, but she pointed out that if forgiven he would have no real consequence for his action. Why not do it again down the road? Or worse? If he faced huge consequences the first time (by losing her) he would hopefully not continue or escalate that behavior with other women in the future. She said you have to value yourself even if someone else doesn't. BEST LESSON EVER.

I do tutoring for a living and have two students who were acquainted with Aiden at school. This has shaken the community (15 minutes south of Jacksonville, Florida) to the core especially the kids who knew one or both of them. Both of the students of mine said that this boy was very "odd." He apparently had very few friends and didn't seem to want to make any. He seemed depressed. There were warning signs. Much of a loner. In contrast the victim was quite popular. They didn't run in the same crowd at ALL at least at school. The buying and selling of drugs seemed to be their connection. (Speculation by my students). After this incident I do know that the police really have cracked down hard on these middle school kids buying and selling drugs even on school property. Many names have surfaced because of this investigation and the police were made aware of quite a few kids who were "dealers" from the nearby high school. Not that I think that was related to this crime necessarily. This area (not where I live as I'm in Jax)) is a very affluent area where these kids live. Many of the kids are very "entitled" and the horrible part is that the reaction of Aiden's parents doesn't even surprise me. It will probably end up being another case of "affluenza." Tragic. Just tragic. I would love to see Doctor G do a video on that phenomenon.

@@mischaraine1645 I have no way of knowing of course yet. This is just speculation from "rumors" that go around as usual. At least two of the news media interviews with the parents however are consistent in that they are declaring that "their boy was framed by the police." These cases just seem to keep popping up around the country where the defense attorneys use this "affluenza" as a defense (as in the children didn't know what was right or wrong because they were so spoiled and entitled). It doesn't make any sense to me. I certainly hope that isn't the case here and the boy serves the maximum sentence that can be imposed upon a fourteen-year-old if he is found guilty. In addition, I feel the child needs serious help obviously and as a teacher it is so distressing to see things like this. I don't believe prison is the best place for a child to get mental health treatment but I'm not sure what the alternative is in this day and age.

One of details of this horrific case that really unsettled me, besides the murder itself, was the fact that fourteen year-olds were out unsupervised at that time of the morning and that they had 'drug dealers'. I would wager that there must have been an incident earlier in the boys life that caused him to have a morbid fascination with knives.

This is Florida. I lived there all of the 90s, then visited in 2010. A male friend had bought a trailer home in Fort Lauderdale, not realizing that there was an $800./month lot fee. Huh? One evening, he went out. HIS Dealer, "Crystal Lakes," called on the phone. I got out of there but quick.

I have a 21 year old and a 31 year old and they were both a little disruptive in their teens but I myself was way worse! I told them early on they could never pull anything over me that I didn’t already know about! I am thankful they are both now contributing members of society with good careers and plenty of goals! I have a adult stepdaughter that has been to jail, prison, lost her kids, and now using heroin and we were just as involved with her life early in her teen years she stole cars and went to a wilderness camp for children at risk at 13. She just never seemed to comprehend that consequences came with her actions. Early in her childhood she was in and out of hotel rooms with her mom and I still wonder to this day if she was sexually assaulted and physically abused which led to her defiant behavior as a teenager. You just never know. We are scared that to get that phone call of drug overdose but she can only help herself at this point.

@ Dr. Grande and community… A good parenting reminder. It takes an adult to be a real parent. Setting boundaries and holding those boundaries firm is one of the ways you can prepare your child for the real world. If you give them opportunities to grow and they do not, then that maybe on them. For example saying no or taking a child’s cell phone privileges away when they are displaying behaviors that are not healthy for their development. My dad used to say to me growing up that it’s important to teach your children boundaries or someone else will. Thank you 🤔❤️

@Redwood Rebelgirl Bundy did try to kill one of his long-term girlfriends. I can't remember which one, but he admitted to blocking off her house's door/windows and messing with her fireplace so it emptied smoke into the home while she slept one night. She woke up coughing, fixed the problem (the fireplace) and didn't question it at the time.

I hurt so badly for both families. As a mother of two girls it would be so devastating to know what my daughter went through and that her life was taken. Also as a stepmother of 2 boys with severe mental illness I know that is so very hard and heartbreaking. Knowing one of them murdered someone so viciously and would be more than likely going to prison forever before they were old enough to drive would be unimaginable. My prayers are with both families.

It severely pisses me off how many parents unleash their damaged children on the world, and enable them to harm others. Also, how many parents seem to simply throw their kids to the wolves to be at the mercy of the world. This is exactly how horrors like those one occur, over and over. A lot of parents are overworked - I get it. Maintaining a family is hard. But why don't you THINK about that BEFORE you start your family? Too many people procreate simply as a matter of course for self-affirmation of their egos. Parents do not only have a duty to their children, but they also have a duty to the society and community around them to rear healthy individuals who will benefit (or at least not negatively affect) said society. This is how civilization is maintained. The family unit is the building block. I know parents are not always to blame, but things have gotten to the point where I'm beginning to believe that parents need to be held accountable for the violent crimes of their minor children under specific circumstances. Society cannot stop the wrong people from procreating, but it should sure as hell hold them accountable for their incompetent parenting. Bad parents create the criminals of the future that threaten the lives of the rest of us.

Sometimes criminals have the best of families I just think some people are born into it like there's some sort of a missing gene as well I call it... I had a brother like that and he never seemed to have gotten past I'd say age 14 or 15 and he was always in and out of trouble his entire life and there's probably things he did that I know nothing of based on a few things he told me but I mean he he was so caught up in the face he actually look like a monster I still loved him because he was my brother even though when we grew up we were mortal enemies but I had a sense of I guess sympathy for him that he didn't seem to be able to get it and you know go on with some sort of normal life anyway he died I'd say 10 to 15 years ago with no family know anything except for my brother who's a pastor and they were very close growing up so I guess Paul's information must have been in his wallet or something for them to call and my brother paid for his funeral that's about it I didn't even know he had died till after the fact yes I have a strange family but for the most part we're all very productive people do our best to pay taxes live by the rules raise our children in the church insist on at least a decent education and allow our kids some leniency because of our own growing up but yet we know I should say they know what a belt is it's just the way I believe and guess what they're okay they're pretty good old kids grown adults now with families of their own so I'm just saying some kids have perfect families if they become crazier criminals addicts I know for sure I've seen it

On many occasions in various videos you have posted, I've thought to myself, that I hope your wife and kiddos recognize how lucky they are. Never have I heard such insightful tokens of wisdom about partnerships, loyalty, behavioral appropriateness and truly mindful, engaged parenting. It's like your intellect, combined with your passion for your career choice, have enabled you to not just practice your skill, but truly learn important life lessons from so many client's and case studies, allowing you to clearly see and understand exactly what NOT to do and most importantly, how one might actually GET IT RIGHT. I genuinely respect, appreciate and enjoy your efforts in areas I wish were compulsory life lesson classes for so many. At least, here in Australia, even at top performing schools and college, such lessons, as you mentioned, come down to the parent's personal involvement. Many of whom, are perhaps not engaged, educated or equipped with the skills, knowledge or maybe even time, to know how to effectively parent, or maybe they do but as you said, consider it important for their child to learn from experience. Sometimes I really question how things got to this point. Having lived in the US and Australia, parenting styles really are quite similar it seems. And I see more divorce, myself included in the casualties. I'm no expert, but having experienced a narcissistic hubby, I came across your channel hoping to learn and understand more. Hoping not to have history repeat itself. The one thing that I have felt, and perhaps this just comes down to me and may not be so for the majority, is that it seems like COMMUNITY is slipping through our fingers. I don't particularly know what it may have been like for previous generations, but to me, it seems like we're all on our own for the most part. And many of us are getting it wrong.. Not through lack of trying, but without community we don't learn and grow from each other's experiences. People are getting divorced rather than learning how to work through relationship challenges. I don't mean to suggest divorce is never appropriate. But I sense that this is going full circle. Parent's aren't investing their time and energy and working on their parenting skills. Helping their children learn appropriate behaviors. Perhaps parent's don't have community support systems in place to help them understand how to handle situations or cope when they could truly use the help. It seems the elderly are placed into assisted living when perhaps we should be engaging with them when appropriate. Life skills and lessons are being lost. In our rush to get ahead it feels like we're all falling behind. Growing up in Australia, certainly things were different perhaps than they were in the US. But I have a sense of loss. I recall dinners every night with my whole family at the table. If someone was going to be late we would wait so we could share the meal together. I recall frequently cooking dinner with my mum and siblings and lots of conversation. I recall long discussions at the dinner table and in our teens I recall we gave our parent's some challenges they had to work through WITH US. Maybe this still exists and I simply haven't seen it. It feels like everyone's crossing paths but not taking the time to engage. Being old wasn't something to attempt to surgically conceal with face lifts, rather, the wisdom something to admire and see the beauty in. And after my Pa passed away, my Nana moved into the spare room until she passed at 96yrs young. And we listened to her stories and she was a valued member of the family. There were no cell phone's at the dinner table. After a day of horse riding and gardening chores on the weekend, I sat on the front porch and watched the sunset, listening to the cricket or rugby with my Dad. He took me to my sport's practice. Mum packed my school lunch every day. I'm 44 but I feel like I'm describing something that makes me seem 74. I think technology, education, growth, knowledge, learning and advancement are essential and so important. But. I guess I want us to "remember" too. I don't want us to lose touch with what's truly important. Connection with each other in real and meaningful ways so we can keep learning and growing together. I think I need to find my tribe, my connection. We all deserve that. Thanks for your wise and thought provoking commentary. I just love 'em! 😉🦘

I did find it pretty shocking that the parents were so oblivious to what their very young teens were up to! Why are 13 and 14 year olds out wandering the city at the early hours of the morning? How does a 13 year old have a drug dealer? This whole story is crazy and IMO could have been avoidable had these teens parents had either been stricter or more involved in the teens lives, or both!

People can 100% be born with the genetic predisposition for certain mental health issues. All it takes is one wrong event to happen to trigger those mental health conditions. The teenage/young adult years are when most schizo effective disorders, ASD/NPD, etc. develop or become obvious to outsiders. There are always signs beforehand, but most people either aren’t trained in recognizing them, or have no authority and thus cannot do anything about the situation.

I don't know in this boy but from the description of his behaviors by friends and family, I would guess he showed disturbing signs at a much younger age. If his early grade school teachers were asked and could be honest, I bet they would say he was a problem kid and had strange behaviors then. As a recently retired teacher, I saw a few during the 28 years who exhibited very alarming behaviors. ( violence toward adults and classmates, talk of wanting to hurt animals and people, fits of rage destroying textbooks classroom materials, self harm, all at the ages of six, seven, eight. Guidance counselers, principals, parents all looked the other way as to not get involved.)

Thank you for bringing up the fact that there were teens out at night without their parents knowledge. Teens are impulsive. They do what seems right at the moment. They do not expect to go out at night and get murdered. Apparently, no one knew Tristyn was out that night. Expecting your teen to “stay home” while you go do something else is taking an unnecessary chance. Parents do need to do a better job of thinking about every situation their teen could get into. This was a tragic case all around.

The capacity for teenagers to self destruct amazes me. It’s like they are incapable of making a single bad decision, they have to make at least five in rapid succession and then set something on fire. I agree with you Dr Grande-they need supervision, discipline and boundaries to protect them from themselves, at least until they have enough experience to realize that death is something that could actually happen to them. It’s such a shame that in this case it did.

Dr. Grande, for the first time ever, I don’t fully agree with your final thoughts on this case. Aiden’s parents obviously had no qualms advising him to lie to cover up the fact that the jeans he wore the night of the murder were bloodied. When a parent behaves immorally and/or unethically in front of their child, they are leading that child to believe that behavior is reasonable and acceptable. I believe his parents’ first priority upon hearing his revelations wasn’t to worry about safety; rather, it should have been to behave responsibly, advise him to tell the truth at all costs, and assure him that they would stand by him. Instead, they suggested he lie about what he was wearing, and mom deliberately tried to destroy evidence. It is possible that had they provided Aiden with a proper upbringing complete with teaching him right from wrong, setting a good example of how he should behave, and getting him the help he needed when he showed symptoms of serious psych problems, he may never have perpetrated this horrific crime. In this case, this bad Apple may not have fallen far from tree.

I've been following this case since it broke. So horrific! Although I believe an in depth psychological review of the defendant is necessary and may give us some insight, I absolutely believe he is guilty and needs to be held accountable for his atrocious actions, no matter his age. There is a family that has lost their daughter in the most brutal way. Do I hope he can be rehabilitated? Yes. But until we understand why he chose to do this, I'm not sure if he can be or not. Thank you Dr. for another professional analysis and sharing your thoughts on this case.

Kids have been doing that for years though... Not saying it's right, but I knew kids who'd smoked weed in 5th grade (I'm in my 30s). There's even the movie 13 which depicted this and it's nearly 20 years old now.
