Can you still paddle with a kayak paddle with your hands and use the foot paddles? or because of the speed you would just get in the way of the kayak going forward? I like kayaks, and I always thought it was great that I could enjoy the outdoors and exorcise, and always wished I could exorcise both upper and lower body, what do you think? Thanks for the video.

My first time Kayaking and this Kayak held strong. kzbin.infoUgkx4k5UrhC3v_Y4hIEaXLGvHcN5a5aBmZNB The water got pretty rough as a speed boat zipped by me, and the Kayak withstood it (I expected to be capsized). The Ores are very easy to put together, the pump worked beautifully. the seats are a bit hard to sit in after a while (I recommend sitting on the floor). after reading the reviews I was very scared it'd get a hole in it, the material is very strong and durable. The Air valve may need a small Phillips head screwdriver to adjust, other than that, it's well worth the money!(update)I've gone Kayaking in 3 Lakes and 2 rivers totaling about 40 miles. the kayak had two holes and they patched easily and no other problems can't wait for kayaking season this year!

Just wanted to say thank you! Your past experiences with this kayak and helpful comments on other threads gave me the confidence to buy my Mako 10, ironically less than 24hrs before this video was released. I figured if the guy who pedals practically every kayak every year felt the Mako line was good enough to own 2 for his personal fleet, that speaks volumes. This video is going to help people and Riot so much in giving people the confidence to move forward. Cheers!

Very helpful comments and review of BOTH 'Yaks (and especially the "Price Points" of Pedal 'Yaks...!) To me, there HAS to BE a "Trade-Off"! More stability, more costs...More accessories, more costs...Better seat, more costs...! Those are 2 of the "Best of Everything" for someone just getting started in peddle-type 'Yaks, I've ever seen...! Thanks for making this video, and I'll pass it on to a Friend of mine. I have a good sense of balance, but even with that being said I’m 200lbs and it is a 10ft kayak. Not practical to fish from the nose of the kayak...but wanted to push the limits a bit. I was shocked that I didn’t get much water in the hull despite the hatch being submerged and multiple flipping tests.

My yak, Radar 135, utilizes the track mounted seat as well. If you want to store it at the dock/canal for ready use, store it upside down on two lengths of 6x6 lumber. I used a a bungee hook to keep the seat folded down, then just flipped it over. Keeps the yak off the ground, keeps the sun from beating on the seat, and the bungee keeps the seat back from flopping on the ground when inverted.

I’ve been fishing the Mako 12 for over a year now. Good all around kayak. The main issue I have had in the course of the year is the steering/rudder system. I have been through three sets of steering cables and just installed my fourth. Per Riot, seems to be a known issue. Very accommodating to get new cables out. I did a reinstall/modification on my channel if anyone happens to find the same issue.

Ray Liberatore definitely is the year for affordable pedal kayak options. So many companies getting into the pedal drive market. Vanhunks, Riot, Pelican, and more have pretty affordable pedal kayaks. A hair more expensive is the Lightning Kayak Strike. Beyond that is the Ocean Kayak Malibu PDL and is about $1899. So many options. I wish I could review them all. Great review! It's difficult to find thorough reviews of the cheaper pedal kayaks. About the only negative I can give these kayaks is that if you're tall or average height with longer legs, this kayak may not allow you to adjust the seat far enough back to allow for a comfortable pedaling position. I felt like I was 2-3" too close to the pedals even when the seat was as far back as it could go. I'm 6'3", but only have a 33" inseam, so my legs aren't terribly long. I only quickly tried it, so it could've also been that I wasn't positioned in the seat properly, etc., but regardless I think it's a tight fit for taller people, so if you're taller, you may want to try it before buying it. Otherwise, it's a really nice, inexpensive pedal drive kayak option.

Well done. Re: the seat; place a large enough garbage or leaf bag over it; the draw strings will keep it in place and that may protect it, to some degree from the elements. I own a 12 foot pescador and do not understand why manufacturers place fishing rod holders behind the seat; unless you are very young or a contortionist reaching for equipment behind you on a somewhat unstable kayak is a PITA.
@KayakDIY
@KayakDIY 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Great tips. I agree with statements on rod holder placement. I kinda wish I could buy most kayaks without the rod holders and install them myself.

Great review! This might be the 2nd generation kayak. The original one had a nylon strap to park the drive when not in use. Also, the rudder control is permanent on the older model. Even though I don't own this kayak anymore. I made some upgrades that might help some folks, including a possible fix for the seat issue and under-seat storage.

@Saltloony

@@KayakDIY I had them for over a year. Great kayak for entry-level. Once you find a good position for your seat. You can jam both sides of the tracks with a piece of rubber or foam. That helps with the easy install. I don't know if they fixed the scupper holes. They had very uneven shape and would allow water to seep in and stay in the deck with little extra weight on the kayak. Those foam scupper plugs were useless in stopping the water.
@KayakDIY
@KayakDIY 4 жыл бұрын

I've been using fishing out of a Mako 10 for 18 months and I am very very satisfied with it. I too found that the seat was hard to remove and did a mod to it. I took off the 2 screw on blocks at the back of the seat, cut out a section on the blocks just big enough for the tube to snap on. The 2 blocks are then screwed onto the tracks and left there permanent. To put on the seat, I just slide the front inserts into the front track then snap the back into the 2 blocks that are left there permanently. This mod has saved me an enormous amount of time.

Pretty nice for the money. I fish flats a lot and hit shallow bars and oyster reefs daily. I don't see that this pedal drive kicks up when hitting something, so that would mean I would probably break it pretty quickly. With the sport growing so rapidly, the used market is somewhat of a buyer's market, so I went with a used Hobie. Also, I can flutter pedal a hobie in shallow water.

I continue to be very interested in your demos of the Hobie inflatables. You seemed so excited about their performance, I was intrigued. I am older, really older (73) and I have had a bad back for many years. I have been looking at the Feel Free Lure series because people rave about the comfortable seat, the weight of the 10.5 and/or the 11.5 and the “Wheel in the Keel”. These features make the Lure series very attractive to me. I love fly fishing and I don’t want my age and my limitations to put an end to 71 years of trout fishing! My father taught me when I was 2 and also gave me his utter love and joy in the sport. So, could you please tell me about how easy or difficult it is to set up the inflatable and how comfortable the seat is, taking into consideration a bad back and age? I would appreciate and value your opinion.

Thanks Chuck. Definitely doing my best to be thorough. Part of the reason why I waited so long to upload on these kayaks. Wanted to test them enough to determine strengths and weaknesses as well as gain insight in the durability.

Hey KayakDIY, thank you so much for contributing awesome content that helps this hobby continue to grow! Have you ever tried out the Native Manta Ray Propel? I was curious how that would stack up against a Mako 12 in big water. I'm 5'11" and 160 lbs.
@KayakDIY
@KayakDIY 2 жыл бұрын
This is an old comment. However, I will comment anyway. The Native Manta Ray is an excellent kayak. Performance is very similar. Build quality of small hardware components is “slightly” better in Native. However, I’m not sure it justifies the price difference. It just comes down to what design you like more. One plus for the Native is that the rudder is under the kayak which prevents potential for fishing line snagging.

I’d be curious how replacement pedals would be to install Shimano bicycle SPD clip in pedals for more pedaling power and efficiency. I also wonder if a higher performance 3 blade prop might work? Otherwise, looks awesome! As a former cyclist turned kayaker, these mods would be pretty cool, especially if they could increase the cruise speed of these boats!

I called Riot few days ago. They are revamping their website and going to hopefully make it easier to buy their kayaks online and find local dealers. People want to buy them, but right now biggest complaint folks have was not being able to find one to buy online. 😂 Until then anyone wanting to buy one can message me at our website and I will link them up with my primary contact at Riot.

All of the pedal kayaks focus on SOT fishing rigs. What is the best sightseeing pedal kayak? Light, low center of gravity, least cluttered..

Hobie Revolution 13 or....I really enjoy the Ocean Kayak Malibu PDL. The Malibu PDL isn’t setup for fishing much but could be. The Malibu PDL cuts through waves beautifully and I never got water in the hull. The Malibu PDL was effortless to pedal long distances. In river currents I could hold my position with using much energy. The Malibu PDL remains my favorite pedal kayak for overall versatile performance.

Great review. Very honest and thorough. Checked out the link but Amazon didn't have very much in the description. Does the $1300 (12 ft) come with the anchor trolley lines installed? Is it made in Canada or China? Thanks!

You mentioned your weight but I didn’t catch your height. Also, how stable is the kayak in moderate waves, say 1 - 2 foot waves. One more thing, I’m not a kayak builder and know little about the physics of it, but why doesn’t the kayak manufacturers fill the hull with foam type flotation? I feel this would reduce water in hull and add more stability. I was going to purchase a homie 12 but after this fantastic video I wil certainly get a mako 12. Thanks for this excellent video.
@KayakDIY

I’m 6ft 2in tall. Foam blocks are often added as emergency floats and to provide support to hull in certain areas of kayaks. Most are not fully filled with foam as it adds weight...and would increase shipping costs as well as reduce in hull storage capabilities.

Just getting into the hobbie and only want to purchase a kayak once. Been out a few times with friends still pretty new to the Bobbie. My plan is to use for taking out my 4 year old on calm ponds and such and to be able to use for fishing possibly in the sound if the kayak can take it. What model should I be looking at that would best fit? Thanks for any help. Great video

in Turkey, in the market there is a brand called FreeCamp and they also have Pedal Drive kayaks. Have you ever heard this brand? The model name is: Allure.
@KayakDIY
@KayakDIY 4 жыл бұрын
Have not heard of that particular kayak make and model. The last two years tons of companies started producing pedal kayaks. Many are just rebranding pedal kayaks imported from China. So you will see some kayaks that look identical but are branded with two different company names. Some companies like Riot have their own unique kayak designs and sometimes even own the Chinese factories but are making the kayaks in China simply to reduce price. Hope this makes sense. For example if you look at Alibaba website you will see a lot of kayaks with no branding but they look like kayaks that big brands are selling.

@@KayakDIY many thanks. It seems, the entry point to buy a pedal kayak is 1.000 USD. Am I right?
@KayakDIY
@KayakDIY 4 жыл бұрын
@@adventurelover6955 yes. The cheapest pedal kayaks are pretty much $1,000. My favorite pedal kayak for the money is the Ocean Kayak Malibu PDL for around $1800 online. It is the smoothest and most reliable pedal kayak I have ever owned. It also never gets water inside the hull. Very well made.

I have a Lightning and my Son has one too and they are more expensive and we love them but one has been rock solo d the other has been plagued by drive issues. First time they sent the part and I fixed it and last trip lost a fin and a pin and another broke part. I would not be scared to try the riot. Really don’t have anything to compare but the one lighting has been perfect the other has lemon Drive. May put a plug and trolling motor and just forget the bad drive or find a Hobie Drive for it.

I like the Mako 12 better. The Hydryve Catch 130 I would like better than the Mako 10. I’m tall and weigh 200-210lbs. The Mako 10 didn’t have great weight distribution for me being a larger guy....it felt slightly stern heavy. The Mako 12 and Catch 130 pedal felt more comfortable for person my height and weight.
