Two more benefits of the Mirage for me. 1) When you stop peddling the fins are feathered so almost no drag whereas propeller blades have substantial drag. 2) I like the back and forth motion of the pedals which keeps my feet lower, less lower back strain, but of course that may not bother you if you're under 60.
@garycox78393 жыл бұрын
Excellent points. I'm also "over 60".
@ArbitraryLifestyle3 жыл бұрын
@@garycox7839 I'll add another, for the 360 drive at least... not only can you get into shallow water without having to remove the drive, and not only can you still pedal in shallow water to move forward or backward, but with the 360 drive I can still rotate the drive when the fins are all the way "up" against the hull to change direction. I can't remember if you can pull the reverse tab on the 180 drives while the fins are up against the hull, but I swear I remember being able to do so.

I carry both drives. Fin drive for open water, prop for fishing. Yeah, its expensive but its cheaper than a bass boat and it fits in the truck. If you think about it, we waste way more money on nonsense that doesn't even serve our interest beyond a moment. For the ease and fun of it, I just bit the bullet and Im glad I did. Amazon has financing too, bought my pedal drive on payments and enjoyed it all the while paying it off and now. Mkney shouldn't stop folks from living the best moments on a lake or river. We don't live forever, but these memories live on and are priceless.

I have and have had Hobies for a long time. I also have a Native Ultamate Propel. One day Id like to move up to a Titan or Maybe a Slayer. I will add this about the drives. The Hobie drive works best with their Kayaks that use the sail, but are higher maintenance then the propel drive. While both need maintenance from time to time, more parts will ware out sooner on the Mirage. The rods in the fins will ware through at the tips, cable tension needs adjustment, a lot more moving parts to come lose. And I just have the forward only kind. The propel is almost all internal and sealed from the elements and just need grease from time to time. About the only thing that may need replacing is the prop, and thats only if it bumps into stuff a lot. Once I got a prop driven kayak, there was no looking back as far as fishing. The Mirage still has its place for me when it comes to kayak sailing.

Most of my fishing is in shallow water over grass. The grass has gotten so bad that the propeller has been rendered useless. Has a lot to do with conditions for using the drives. Sometimes I leave the Mirage drive at home due to water depth. I can repair the Mirage drive with parts. When my Propel drive cracked at the thwart tube, the entire drive had to be replaced at their "cost" of $800. I have since converted my Bluesky 360 to using the Mirage drive due to conditions where I fish. To each their own. I have used kayaks with the Mirage Drive, Propel Drive, and the Jackson drive.

Good video, and since it was published in 2018, it should be noted that many of the positive aspects of the Mirage drive are the same as in the Jackson Flex Drive-it is actually a hybrid in many respects. It tucks into the hull, it can be used in shallow mode and had three pitch settings for the prop. You really don't need to take the upper pedal mechanism off, since it looks totally integrated into the kayak on first glimpse. It will also very soon (January 2019) have an electric drive/integrated battery that can be popped on in a matter of seconds. I have seen many bent masts on mirage drives, so their use in waters where there is underwater wood is somewhat over-rated in this video. The FD folds into the hull when it hits something. Also- not to pick nits- a laydown is "cover", not "structure". Structure is the underwater topography and bottom composition (points, ledeges, rock-piles, etc). I'm also not on any pro-staff whatsoever and have fished out of several makes as well.
@outdoors-fun6 жыл бұрын
Another big issue is durability. I know a handful of guys with the propel drive that have pulled their yak out after the winter and the propel drive is seized. Water finds its way into the bearings and they rust up and seize during the off season.
@Caughtitoutdoors6 жыл бұрын
All these drives are made with somewhat delicate parts. You need to maintain them, inspect them, grease them. And don't trust them.
@outdoors-fun6 жыл бұрын
Agreed. but ive seen guys dump their yaks launching and lose their mirage drive, dig them out of the sand at low tide a week later, rinse it off in the salt water, and slap in in their yak and go. Not doing that with a propel drive. You can also bring spare parts and repair a mirage drive right on the water. Or fit a spare in the hatch..

The Coosa FD is based on the top selling Coosa HD hull and deck layout but adds a long-awaited Flex Drive system (patent pending) allowing for hands-free propulsion. The new Flex Drive System offers forward and reverse operation and includes a unique articulating system for deep and shallow water navigation. A daggerboard protected tri-blade propeller combined with articulation gives the Flex Drive a performance increase over other drives and helps with keeping the system clear of obstacles and easy to clean. The Coosa FD comes with the fore-aft trimming and our Hi-Lo Elite Seat System giving it flexibility in seating positions that puts the pedaler in the most comfortable position possible. The Flex Drive is easily deployed with the flip of a lever, has adjustable pitch, a 1:12 ratio and will be upgradable to a new motor drive system available in 2018. The Coosa FD has all the the features of the best-selling Coosa HD, from rod tip protection system to gear track surrounding the Ergo Seat and more. The combination of one of the best designed all-around kayaks and the new Flex Drive makes this a leading combination for hands-free kayak angling!

You didn’t talk about the drives function too much. For example, is a prop drive faster, more maneuverable, faster from a stopped position. How it stores in your vehicle really doesn’t matter to me. From point a to point b: which one will get you there faster, which one can maneuver easier around obstacles, which one can go the first 20 feet quickest? Than you
@BeyondTheBoundsOutdoors6 жыл бұрын
That's correct I didn't ...what you are seeking answers for are functions of kayak hull design and weight. Maneuverability is based on design and weight for instance the Titan turns better than the slayer propel...but in a Greg Blanchard video he showed how he couldn't even get thru a spot of current and needed to be towed by a hobie....I did address torque...which answers your quickest 20 ft question, but then this is all still functions of weight and hull design...not drives....storage matters to everyone...and is directly related to owning one of the drives.....the video was about the drives and not functions related to weight of the kayaker, the kayak, and the hull design...which from bass boats to kayaks all related to speed. If you dropped the mirage into a hobie revo kayak..your speeds would increase, but you sacrifice benefits of the pro angler for speed...the kayaker who can go harder longer is gonna win the race.

The wilderness was fast and was great in the lakes but I fish salt water and oyster beds. The wilderness did not handle as well in flats and oyster beds, you might as well have a paddle kayak. Most of the noise you hear with the propeller drive is caused by cavitation of the blades through the water. They spin very fast at a high rpm causing the creation of air bubbles under the kayak.
@1Deejay75 жыл бұрын
Think that only applies to motor driven blades there. I cant believe a person can match those rpm speeds with leg power
@MSmith-jf5wo4 жыл бұрын
With the "New" Propeller from Native, it is much quieter (Less Cavitation!), although I DO think it loses some speed. Where I mostly fish, I can't use the Hobie drive system... too many darn STUMPS, just below the surface! Tried an Outback for a day, and 5 times had to re-bend the vanes back, just to get back in to shore! One thing I DID like about the Hobie is: it can go in shallower water than the prop drives. (I have a Titan now, and a "Paddle Driven 'Yak" - for a "Spare and Friends", for fishing). Thanks for the informative video, and YES!... The Propel Drive DOES make more noise, with either prop!

I have had a Native Slayer for 5 years and a Titan for more than a year. The best part about the pedal drive to me is that it gives your entire leg and hip a workout. All you have to do is slide the seat forward or back and you can alter the muscle groups that you are working, while resting the other side a bit. You can't do that with the Hobie. The crackling noise you hear is probably cavitation. The propeller spins pretty fast so it's most likely what it is. Small vapor bubbles form along the surface of the fast spinning propeller forming a vacuum as it cuts through the water, which immediately collapse once they blade has passed through. The collapsing bubbles create the crackling noise. Which also means by the way, that propeller drive is probably not very efficient. Part of the energy you put into the propeller is wasted making bubbles and nice crackling sounds.

Any comments about the electric drives with spot lock

I really enjoyed your comparison vid on both drives. As an older sportsman , i will be 64 next month and was wondering your opinion on the most user friendly . I have never paddled a kayak. But have paddled a canoe all my life. And some days you just get blown off the water in a canoe not a really good platform espically alone. Can be impossible to get any fishing done as the profile of the canoe catches alot more breeze/wind. Can you comment about wind pushing kayaks?

Hi, I saw that you fished at Centennial Lake. I'm thinking about buying a kayak for fishing. You have a lot of knowledge about kayak.. The pros and cons. Do you think it's helpful to meet locals and learn from them?

The problem with the fins pedal system is that the mechanism is exposed to the water (specially to sea water) and the floating solids sand etc and that makes its life sorted!!!

I’m new to the kayak world. Are drive systems something that you can interchange regardless of brand of kayak?

Really good breakdown of both drives! I wonder what the noise from both drives is like underwater? how much louder to the fish is the pedal vs mirage? I have the Predator PDL and will be doing a lot of trolling at night for walleye this spring and am wondering if i'm going to need to look at using planer boards to get a little bit away from my kayak

Don't know if anyone has thought of it yet but a bolt on the rear paddle drive sorta Mississippi paddle steamer type thing as most efficient.

Do they sell the mirage drive and well on it's own? Or what would be comparable that has the flip up fins and 360 rotation? Im trying to find a fin drive for my fiberglass row boat. Not more then $5-600 can you help me?

Which one is best for marshes at the coast? Seems like you are saying it would be the hobie mirage style because of grasses and shallowness.
@BeyondTheBoundsOutdoors5 жыл бұрын
That is correct...props catch lots of grass...but are also decent paddling kayaks if you get super shallow or in really thick grass

Great insights. If anything was perfect we would all be doing it. You have to choose your gear by what you do most often. They all have high and low points.

That they do! I seriously loved both pedal and fin.
