Good stuff! Used to fish them there back in the 80s before that interchange was built and the fence was put up.. They were maybe 4 or 5ft max back then. Those fish have been trapped in those canals since the pumping stations were built way back when. Really amazing how big they are.

Wow awesome, thanks for sharing. Yes there aren’t many but they are quite big, been in there a super long time. That fish could have been a baby when you were fishing for them in the 80s.

@reelingwithrobby That's what I was thinking. Just looked at some old aerials and that canal was there in 1951 with a smaller pumping station. No telling what's lurking in there! I do recall some gill netting in there too unfortunately.

@Diskbreaks I’ve been fishing the canals heavy for quite a few years now. I have caught gar up to 7 feet in all canals that go north to south as well as large catfish, biggest being 49lbs. As you probably know they are mostly filled with carp as well but I also have caught a couple alligator snapping turtles, one being easily 100lbs I would estimate: kzbin.info/www/bejne/poTOpaOqnsp9rZIsi=0duFRMUIypxt8b92 But who knows, you’d think I’ve caught everything by now but I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s something crazy stuck in them

Awesome man! Those canals must be filthy, but they're full of life!

Man 😮💨, another video to convince me to get a kayak and catch some gar. Tx starting to get colder so hopefully when it warms I’ll be out on the river.

Another great video Robby. The colours on that gar were nuts. You make yakking, finding spots, catching gar look like such an awesome experience. The reel you used to catch the gar, I believe I’ve seen you talk of it, is it an Abu Garcia round reel C3. If I was looking into round reels what size should I get for an Abu. I have an 8000 combo, 6000 bait feeder, and may purchase the piscifun Alijoz 400 as a young avid gar fisherman from houston used to use before he passed and managed to slay some huge gar on it.

Haha thank you! And yes I believe the red on is a 7000C, and I have a silver one as well that I think is a C3 but I can’t remember. They’re good reels. I stick with the 7000 size for large gar for sure. I have heard good things about the piscifun reel, but wow what a shame.

You ever had any luck catching them on lures? I know the hookup ratio probably isn't that good, but catching dinosaurs posts videos on it.

Never tried. We don’t have enough fish packed into a small area to reliably get a bite in a reasonable amount of time compared to the dam they fish. It takes me sometimes a whole day to get a bite on cut bait, I can’t imagine how long it would take for a lure Lol but I’ll make a video for it eventually when it warms up again
