Just got this. The split function can be used in many ways; the main thing you want to do is hold the split button, then you can 1. decide where to split (press the key while holding split) 2. change the relative volume (use the volume buttons while holding split to either get the lower or upper part to play higher/lower) 3. change the sound of the lower part (the upper part is always your main, and the lower can be changed by choosing either "Piano" or "Other" and then cycling through just like your usually would, again, while holding split). Hope that helps!

I bought this piano and I found out how to change the split, you hold the split key down and while you are you can push any key on the piano and that’s where the split starts so if you hold down split and hit C4 then it splits from C4 and down and while you’re holding the split key if you click the minus and plus buttons that you would normally press to change the sound then you change the sound of the split if you dont hold split and change the sound it changed the sound of the top half of the keyboard, hope this helps anyone who has this keyboard

Kate, I own the same Roland F-140R, in order to change the sounds in the lower of the split keyboard, change the rhythm, it will give you different instruments to accompany, remember you do not have to turn on the auto rhythm, just change the rhythm to your liking. Hope this helps.

According to the user manual, the other two pedals control the page turning bluetooth feature. Bluetooth can also be used to transmit MIDI signals to connected devices with a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). I have no clue what the latency is like on it though. Would be cool to see a review which utilises all those extra functions. Thanks for this review though. It was the deciding factor for us to buy this model.

Hello Kat, Thank you for your helpful review. I'm going to be purchasing my first digital piano soon (upgrading from keyboard playing), and I'm considering either the Kawai KDP110 or the Roland F140-R. Left pedal is soft pedal (una corda) making the sound less loud and or softer. Middle pedal is sostenuto, it sustains only those notes that are being held down when the pedal is depressed. So if you use it while holding down a few keys, only those keys will have their dampers released (like a limited sustain pedal) until you release the pedal again. Other notes remain unaffected.

Thank you for this wonderful review. Thanks for reminding us about the pros. just bought one this week. im not pro, but my left (soft) pedal does work, mutes the sound a little bit, but is very subtle, you need to sharpen your ears. as well as the sustain pedal. Haven't figured out the middle one. In terms of the split system, I think I saw something in the user manual (quite bulky), which i might go through later on. The functions seem to be very basic and simple, but I believe are quite advanced in terms of technology.

@@KatBurnsKASHKA thanks for the reply Kat. I actually haven't thought about using it that way. I know it can work that way too. But after I left this comment, I checked them further. Now all three are working for me. The left one subtly mutes the piano (not sure about the other tones.) The middle one , I spent awhile on (obsessively lols), is a kind of selective sustaining, I would call it. You can select which note to sustain, by pushing the pedal *after you play the note* to keep it sustained (sort of cutting halfway through the note, it will sustain after you leave that key.) The notes that are played *after the pedal* won't be sustained. Sorry about the long explanation. Look forward to your new discoveries in the video. Just tag me. or I will check it anyway.

The other pedals actually work, coming from someone who has had a F-120 for more than 6 years. The middle one only acts as a practice pedal in upright pianos. In grands it's a sostenuto pedal, which only sustains the noted depressed when you push down the pedal. The left one is a soft pedal, if is really gentle but you can notice it when you're using it or not

The rattling is what turned me off from this piano, i love the white color and the overall aesthetics , not forgetting the amazing sound but the rattling was a large con for me since i play a lot of left hand etudes and that cranked the rattling to 11 every practice session. So i returned the piano and got the kawai kdp110r, its not as feature packed as the roland but the sound is much better due to more powerful speakers and the feel when playing is on par with the roland so im happy with my switch. Doesn't look as sleek as the roland and its a bit bigger but i like it. Thx for the video, thought it was only me with the rattling issue.

I think you are mistaken about the pedals. The middle pedal for this piano works as a sostenuto and not as a practice pedal. left pedal/uno corda(one string) makes it sound as if one string is vibrating instead 3/2 strings. not softer. ;)

It is my oppinion that it's a very bad idea to suggest that "it would be nice to have a flat space to put a cup of coffee" ... it will only result in a reduced piano life time ... other than that, nice video. Ah, as for setting the left hand tone when in split mode, check owners manual: www.manualslib.com/manual/1043649/Roland-F-140r.html?page=4 »» Playing Different Tones with the Right and Left Hands ([Split] Button) » Changing the Left-Hand Tone »» Hold down the [Split] button and use the steps described in "Selecting Tones.". @@KatBurnsKASHKA Thanks for the reply. In this video (in Portuguese...) it shows as a very easy task: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqndZHqihpiBbrc (at 0:25). App Piano Partner 2 should make that task (and other tasks) easier also, in case you have a Android or iPad device. By the way, I'm not an F-140R owner (maybe in a near future...), but I take the chance to ask you about one thing that worries me (a lot): the videos around show the piano sound brilliance way to high, too metallic, which seems to be default, and ... I can't stand such for practicing/learning; the available piano sound customizations allow a more 'soft' sound ? (Thanks in advance)

For having 3 pedals of which 2 arent doing the job as it was designed to im thinking... why Roland? Why can you not make all of them pedals work properly for the price we pay for this piano. Dont get me wrong I love this piano and its still worth buying. But if you give the buyer 3 pedals then please make them work properly as some people might actually value them. Thats something Roland has to work on for sures!

@@KatBurnsKASHKA On te F-140R, the pedal on the right sustains notes, the pedal on the left softens the tone of the note and the middle pedal is sostenuto. With sostenuto, you play a chord then press down the pedal, the notes will sustain, when the pedal is depressed and you play further notes, they will not sustain.

Hi Kat, thanks for the review. I also recently got this piano and I like everything about it except the notes about E through A just below middle-C, especially F through Ab. They just sound like a different instrument with no nuance compared to the other notes to me. Do they sound fine to you? And I’m sure you covered this in your follow-up video, but the mobile app can definitely change the left side instrument on a split. And the pedals are for soft and a weird kind of sustain that isn’t very useful for most songs. And the soft isn’t really needed since you can, you know, just turn the volume down. Thanks again!

@KatBurnsKASHKA

Hi Leonardo! Yes, it will only be a midi controller so it depends on what sound library/bank you are using. I find it sounds decent with some of the Logic piano sounds but not sure about Garageband. It's too bad there isn't also an audio out to get both midi and the piano itself. In the past I have actually put a microphone by the speaker of my piano as well as recording it in midi and mixed the two to get a bit better sound. Hope that helps?

Does anybody know if it is possible to let the left hand side notes play much longer? I ask because I am disabled on my right side, especially on my right hand and fingers. I have a F-140R and I love the piano as an instrument and I love when chords are played with the melody. That feels whole and deep. When only playing the melody though it feels incomplete for me though and I feel frustrated not being able to play the chords and melody at the same time. I would love to play everything with one hand. First playing the chords which would need to sustain a while while playing the melody. I searched the web for a solution, but I didn't find any. When using Split mode it only sustains the right hand part, when using the pedal. With Dual Mode I don't know in which way to use it to replicate chords and melody at the same time. Does anybody know a solution? That would be really great. Thank you.

Hey Simon! I use music books when I teach, and sometimes I play pieces from my dads old piano books, but for my personal playing I go by feel and generally write it out in more of a chart style. This is because I’m not strong at quickly reading/writing sheet music, so it’s faster for me to chart it like guitar. If I do notate, I play the midi into Logic. Just personal preference ✨

Hi Kat. I'm thinking of buying this piano for use at a school. It needs to compete with a baby grand for 2 piano arrangements of concertos. Also we need it for transposing voice music for exams. Would it manage?
@KatBurnsKASHKA
@KatBurnsKASHKA 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew - I think it could manage but it depends on the room and how loud you need things, the player, etc. It does get quite loud but I've never compared it to a baby grand in the room. Maybe it's worth popping by a music store and seeing if they have the F140 and a baby grand in the same room to get a volume comparison?

Hi, I have the same Roland but in black, no rattle issues and I love it... the only issue I had was the 6 month wait after paying for it... also agree with the middle peddle does it work???

Kat - regarding the rattling soudn: have you isolated the sound to the hinges? If so, piano repair people use linseed oil in the hinges to get rid of it.

Its not true that its impossible to choose another sound on left hand than this bas... everything is written in the manual how to do that. I tested it and it is possible! Also I can't understand the problem with "Rattlin"... Piano is good, but i can see another cons... 1. The operating, changing settings, sounds, rythms is not very user friendly, nor intuitive. The app Roland Partner 2 solves all things, but unfortunately it doesn;w want to work on most devices via blutooth (something is realy broken - i tried on Samsung Galaxy tab3, samsung galaxy S3, Kiano tablet, Iphone 5 - it doesn;t want to work on those devices. Only Xiaomi Redmi 4A works). Roland FP 30 is much better at this point! 2. to play a rythms you have to do many changes, click many buttons to switch off all annoying things like auto chord recognitions, bass, arpegiator, switch off split function, just to leave rythm only... All this stupid stuff is switched on by default and impossible to change that and save this settings as default.

I have been working through the manual and it definitely wasn't easy to figure out how to change it, I haven't been successful yet but I am determined. The rattling still happens, maybe it's my specific piano? It's there when it's baser. I also noticed the bluetooth doesn't connect to my computer or phone at all, it seems to prefer iPads which I don't have. Like you, I wish that it didn't all reset when I turned it off. Lots of buttons to get changes, and also one more flaw - no output 6mm! I realised this problem when I recorded yesterday and was looking for a direct line out. It only has headphones with low volume. Bizarre.

@@KatBurnsKASHKA Its problem with blooetooth. If you buy USB cable (type B) + OTG adapter for microUSB then it will work. I heard that it requires bluetooth v4 and it could work with newest android systems. but it is true, it doesn;t work with old phones (that were bought about 1 year ago or earlier). I think that we should rate the app with only 1 star to make them fix that problem.

@@KatBurnsKASHKA A few solutions for you... You can buy some used iPad - it shouldn;t be expensive - below $100. Maybe $70. Or it could be some smartphone like xiaomi - it is also inexpensive and good and work with that piano (mine is working - it is Xiaomi Redmi 4A). Another thing is to install old version of Piano Parner app - it should also work, But you would have to find that in google (version 1.2), install manually and switch off autoupdate in google play app.

Which part of the lid assembly rattles? is it the hinge at the top, or the pegs at the bottom? We're buying one, and I'm going to figure out how to eliminate the rattling. (I'm a product designer)

@@KatBurnsKASHKA augh! Turns out my girlfriend changed her mind and decided she was going to buy a different model (and then did), so I can't troubleshoot the rattling issue. :/ Rattling is caused by hard surfaces vibrating against eachother, so what I'd do is buy a bit of felt, cut off a few little strips and put them approx where the rollers on the lid come to rest when the piano is open. Then simply open the piano and roll the roller onto the little felt pads. If that works to stop the rattling, get some double-sided sticky tape to fix the pads in place. Hope it helps!

Kat, If you are going to review a piano for the masses, you should have an understanding of a piano's features, or consult with a trained pianist. The three pedals on the F140r work just like a concert grand piano. I'll bet you 100 interwebs that the left two pedals work fine. The F140r is a fantastic instrument.
@KatBurnsKASHKA
@KatBurnsKASHKA 4 жыл бұрын
Oh I understand the pedals on real pianos no problem. This piano uses the soft and sostenudo pedals for Bluetooth things that I don’t use, and it doesn’t make any difference to the sound - unlike on an acoustic piano. That’s why it was confusing to me, since there was no audible difference from the pedals (other than sustain, of course that worked fine) when I was playing.
