My wife and I, and our two adult children, saw the sunrise there some years back. It’s not all that spectacular, I have to say. Much more memorable were the hoards of tourists from China, who didn’t seem to have grasped the concept of a queue or that talking on their cell phones at the tops of their voices in the narrow confines of a train carriage is not very considerate of others. Looks like your visit was at least free from that sort of thing.

I had the same experience New Years 2003, all clouds, no sunrise. Moreover, my room cost NT$8,000 for an 8 person bungalow even though it was just 3 of us. I gotta go back there soon to try again.

Wow i just stumble on this video and it's crazy because i had a completely different experience on Alishan. If you're willing to read, i have this story that happened to me :) I Actually went on a hike on the abandoned military railway and the experience was really emotional. If you're willing to go again and feel adventurous, i would recommend you camp there for one night. The day i went there i walked about four hours and went through different kind of forest and had many point of views. I even saw wild monkeys ! It was a truly immersing experience with nature. When sun was ready to set, i installed my hammock near a cliff and an abandoned tv haha (It was the military base area.) It was night and freezing cold. I was not prepared for this temperature and after few minutes only i started to hear some weird noise and even monkeys screaming from afar. But the scariest moment was when i heard something walking just beside my hammock. I just laid there without a flinch hoping it wouldn't attack me or something. After few minutes of convincing myself that i needed to move my camp, i packed all my stuff in completely darkness to go to an other spot i found earlier. As i arrived to the spot, i was freezing cold and thought it would be the longest night of my life. But then i heard voices. So i decided to go follow those voices ( sounds like i'm crazy haha) and met with actual Rangers. They were around a small fire camp cooking some food and drinking some very strong taiwanese alcohol that i can't remember the name. They couldn't believe how little i was travelling with and offered me to eat with them and drink. They also gave me an aluminium blanket to get through the night after some very little exchange of conversation ( i dont speak mandarin). I woke up the next morning, well i don't think i actually slept, Said my goodbyes, my thanks and returned to chiayi. To me it was totally worth it. All the danger, the unknown, the adventure and the mystical environment made this trip unforgettable. I would do it again no doubt but this time better dressed haha And fun fact, i found Alishan tea in my hometown and it's my favourite tea :)

Great video on Alishan tour. It reminds me of my own visit there - it was pouring and we barely stepped out of our hotel for the two nights that we stayed there. Will I go back again? Maybe not. Alishan is too touristy for me anyway. There are plenty of mountains in Taiwan with far fewer tourists and more stunning views. Most of them can only be accessed by foot though.
