Like with many other things, it's full of hype simply because it's rare and you feel better about yourself/cool for having one. Anyone who likes the look could get something similar for a way better price

I agree from a looks perspective and that many who own this plant only purchase it to say they have it. However, I think some of the interest is also around the history and preservation of the plant. It's not always about looks! The obliqua at one point was dangerously rare to the point where it could have gone extinct. So for some collectors who really love plants, I think they may appreciate this background and want to propagate and sell to others to ensure the plant is available going forward for those who like it to enjoy! And that seems to be happening which is great.
@ThisIsMyFullName

It's not about looks, it's simply about rarity. It's when plants stops being something beautiful to look at, and instead becomes an obsession. It's the same as people who have 500 plants in their private collection and they can't even remember why they bought half of them.

I feel like at these price points, it just becomes a matter of how rare the plant is, and much less about how good the plant looks. I mean, I get it if you're a professional plantsman who collects specific species, but if you're just a private collector why would you spend a 1000 euro on a plant you can't even look at because it's going to be standing on a foggy inclosure all day?

Maybe I’m a weirdo but I couldn’t imagine selling a cutting that wasn’t at least starting to put out a root. I’ve sold some Hoya cuttings and I only sold one fresh because I wouldn’t let that person pay me for more than shipping and a little extra. that's market manipulation, but hard to do when the market is made up of many smaller sellers versus a few big ones. the groups that value more access to plants versus artificial high prices will allow sales, they will grow, and prices will continue to drop for most common "rare" plants because they're not rare lol, it's just hype. the real rare bois will always be $$ but too many people have gotten comfortable price jacking for non-rare plants, the come down is going to be painful for some.

This is what I do. I have a 4 ft aquarium stocked with dozens of Guppies. All my cuttings and runners are floating on small styrofoam squares on the top of the water. Not only are the plants sitting in water they are recieving all the nutrients from the fish waste. There is no filter in the tank. Every two weeks I do a water change of 1/2 the tank and also water all my other plants with this water. Not only do I have no problems with the toxins in tap water as the water is well aged, I never have to fertilise any of my plants and every cutting very quickly roots up. The aquarium is also in my grow room and creates the perfect humidity conditions.

I purchase my plants at local plant swaps or privat sellers in Germany which is always cheaper than professional shops. But just about any popular plants that are sold on there are expensive compared to your bigger and well known sellers. Which is something I don’t mind as propagation will take longer when you don’t have hundreds of mother plants.

Albo rots more than aurea because aurea still produces a bit of food from the yellow, albo doesn't so the plant melts off the parasitic parts if it feels like it needs to.

I've been trying to tell people for months that M. Obliqua Peru runners have a low success rate, and no one wanted to believe me lol.

Does anyone else get annoyed/pissed when they see ppl online selling unstable variegated plants at jacked up prices *because* of the variegation? I'm talking abt albos that have leaves that are like 90%+ white

Obliqua is literally anywhere now just wait half year or more the price would go down further… but adansonii variegated is different imo especially those with nice variegation like half moon, their price would still hanging on for a while. However really surprised to heard Kaylee saying joepii price will be stronger than obliqua but it’s very true that the form of joepii is not sexy to everyone while many people are obsessed with obliqua’s fenestration

For me to spend more than 100 on a plant, it would need to be immortal and have each seperate leaf be a beautiful pastel colour!

It sure would be helpful if your editing staff would list the plants that you are talking about on all your videos.

I gotta be honest I really, really dont get the Joepii hype. I find them gangely, sparse and not appealing. Same goes for the Spiritus Sancti, I will probably never get the hype😂

I think the hype is more about the history and the rarity than about the looks. I personally wouldn’t get it, because I only collect plants I like the looks of, but I can see why some people are interested in owning one just to own this rare, special plant.

Monstera adansonii variegata is still going for $1-2k here in the US. Which is insane bc they’re so saturated in the market here.

I'm screaming at the obliqua segment. I've had a runner I bought back in January that JUST NOW gave a leaf, after 6 months of being a wet stick with more runners and nearly rotting away the root twice. Regarding var adansonii, this may be different in the UK vs the US. It's still highly popular here and I just sold a lovely specimen in an auction for over 4 digits. Curious to know if it's a regional thing!
