A top-pan balance is used to measure the mass of the reactants decreasing. The mass decreases as the carbon dioxide gas escapes through the wool. The wool is used to stop the acid spraying. The more carbon dioxide gas produced in a given time, the faster the rate of reaction. This is the steepest part of the graph. Mean rate of reaction equals mass of reactant used up divided by time. The reaction is complete when no more gas is produced, and this is evident on the graph where it is flat.
