A gas syringe is the most effective piece of apparatus to measure the volume of gas produced. An inverted measuring cylinder can also be used. The more hydrogen gas produced in a given time, the faster the rate of reaction. This is the steepest part of the graph. Mean rate of reaction equals mass of product produced divided by time. The reaction is complete when no more gas is produced, and this is evident on the graph where it is flat.
