In this video I will show you how to make this folded Crazy Patch Bag from Kreative Kiwi Embroidery. This bag is made in the hoop and two straight lines are stitched on a sewing machine to finish it. There are two versions, one is made with a single fabric and the other is crazy patchwork. I will show you how to make both versions in one bag.

I hope that you get your machine back quickly, you will love making this bag Virginia. Speaking of machines being serviced, I am very luck with the company that doesn mine, because I depend on it so heavily for work, they allow me to take it in for 8am the day they are actually going to service it and pick it up late that afternoon, so I am never without it for more than a few hours. Not many companies will do that. I do have to book in advance so that it suits both them and me but it works well.

@@KaysCutz I am supposed to get it back tomorrow afternoon, or Tuesday. They sent it to a city approx. 4 hours away. They did that because of problems when I purchased it from a different dealer, but that dealer just closed shop and left town. It is a long, sad story. :) Hope you are doing well.

Love your designs. Can this be made with a thin vinyl?
@KaysCutz
@KaysCutz Жыл бұрын
I would use an upholstery or marine vinyl because it has a knitted backing. Don't use thin as it will just tear. I personally would use a single piece of vinyl for each hooping and skip the steps for adding multiple fabrics, you could still keep the quilting and decorative stitching. I hope this helps. Happy stitching Tina

Just starting with the simple projects. I cant wait to have the confidence to try this one. I haven't seen a reason for using the wash away stabilizer. If we want the bag stiffer, could the wash away be replaced with a heavier stabilizer and bag stiffener?
@KaysCutz
@KaysCutz 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Morgan the reason for using wash away is because the joins are embroidered, as are the edges. If you dont use wash away stabilizer you will have stabilizer poking through the edges that you cant remove. You can add thermal interfacing on the back of your fabric to stiffen it or replace the batting with decovil heavy instead if you want a rigid bag. I hope this helps you. Happy stitching.

Love watching your tutorials even tho I dont have a machine, but hopefully by the end of the week I should have one lol. Can I ask why do you always use 2 layers of water soluble and not just 1, this is the bit that will confuse me as to when and which you use cutaway,tearaway, fusible.🤔
@KaysCutz
@KaysCutz 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Susan, OK I will try to keep this as short as I can..... Just as good strong foundations are to a building, stabilizer is to the foundation of your embroidery. It is there to support the stitching and to prevent your fabric from stretching and or distorting hence why you use two layers. If you dont use enough stabilizer for whatever you are stitching out, then the fabric can pucker and the stitching can distort due to the pulling and pushing of the stitches on the fabric. When making free standing lace designs, if you dont use two layers of wash away stabilizer the stitches will not interlock and mesh property and when you rince the stabilizer away, your FSL item could come apart. Two layers of wash away stabilizer is is the one area of machine embroidery that you should never skimp on, you can always make savings elsewhere. Another very important part of machine embroidery is to pin the stabilizer around the top edge of your hoop to anchor it. It takes very little time and saves a lot of problems and frustration. If you dont pin, the stabilizer can be pulled down between the hoop pieces and the stitching and design parts will no longer line up where it should and the stitching can end up look very messy. The larger your hoop the more slipping you will have. This is just physics and not a fault of the machine manufacturers however the newer magnetic hoops on some brands of machines are a big step forward to preventing this problem. When to use which stabilizer - I always advise you to use the type given in the instructions of a design. You dont have to use the same brand but if it says to use 2 layers of wash away stabilizer then use that, as it will give you the best results. If you find that your stitch outs are not looking as crisp as they should then use three. This very much depends on the brand that you use. Some are better than others. Wash away stabilizer (The fabric looking type) - This type you will use whenever there is a satin stitch border to the design, most appliques have a satin stitch border. If you stitched out a design that had a satin stitch border and only used one layer the satin stitching will become rounded and uneven, as there wouldnt be enough support to stop the stitches from pulling tight on the stabilizer, where as if you use two layer it is much stronger and the satin stitching will remain nice and flat and stay an even width all along it. You will also use wash away for free standing lace designs, as there isn't any fabric used in making it only thread. The stabilizer is washed away afterwards to reveal just the stitching, so you must make sure that you use at least two layers so that all the stitches mesh together properly. I used to use Super Punch H2O FSL Gone, but it is no longer available in my country so now I use Brothread wash away stabilizer and it is just as good. Solvy topper - The thin clear plastic looking wash away stabilizer - One layer is used on top of any fabric that has a nap or a pile, such as towelling of faux furs etc. It prevents the stitches from sinking down into the pile of the fabric and becomming invisible. It also prevents the foot from tangling up in a faux fur. Cut away stabiizer Normally you use one layer unless instructed. You will use this for designs that do not have a satin stitch edge, for things like table runners and wall hangings and enveloppe back coasters, some bags etc. It doesnt stretch or rince out and becomes a permanent part within the item you are making. Fusible stabilizer This is used primarily on the back of your fabric to stiffen it so that the finished item it is more ridgid. It is also used on knited fabrics such as sweatshirts to prevent it from stretching and or distorting during stitching. You would also use it on the back of fabrics that fray very easily. If you are making slippers then a fusible stiffener such as decovil heavy is a very thick stiffener used for bags and belts and will stop the soles from flopping about when you walk in them. It is designed to to stitched through so it will not damage your machine. Tear away stabilizer - The saying is if you wear it dont tear it, as it is a paper. I personally do not like using it for my embroidery as it can tear during stitching especially if a design has got satin stitching in it (This is my opinion), the only thing that I use it for is for planning fabric and scraps for crazy patch designs that I stitch out, as I mentioned how I go about it in this video. My view is that if your stabilizer fails then not only is it a waste of your time but also of fabric thread batting and anything else that you have used. I prefer to use something more substantial such as wash away or cut away personally, but as I say it is personal preference, some people do like it. To get started you are beter off getting a 12" x 25 or 50 metre/yard roll of Brothread wash away stabilizer (You can buy it on Amazon in most countries and it is a great price) as you can do most things with it even if the instructions tell you to use cut away, but always use a minimum of two layers. You could use a thermal interfacing on the back of you fabric too if you wanted too. I hope this helps you to get started. Machine emboirdery may seem like a bit of a rollercoaster ride when you get started and it is and you learn to make friends with your machine but you will get the hang of it quickly if you follow my videos. Remember that when you make mistakes they are not wasted, you learn much faster by making them than not. If you make a mistake as we all do, dont be in a rush to remove your work from the hoop and throw it in the bin as we are often able to correct or salvage what we are stitching and this is where the magic of help and advice on Kreative Kiwi's Facebook group comes in very handy. I show my mistakes in my videos so you can always pick up tips and tricks on how to correct things. You can join the group as soon as you receive your machine. Make sure you answer the joinng questions or your application will be rejected as all applications are screened by the Admin team. You will get no end of help and advice and KK also has a free mentorship programe too should you need one to one help. It is a great place to show off what you make with KK designs too. facebook.com/groups/kreativekiwi Happy stitching!

Hi Gayleen I use the cheapest regular masking tape that I can find, not the low tack variety as it doesnt stick well. I also run my tape on the back of my hoop from top to bottom rather than side to side as it holds better. I allow enough tape so that it stitcks to the hoop too as it holds better.
