As the days went on the scenery intensified and seemed to change quite rapidly. Although the Aktau mountains neighbored the range in which we camped in, the colors and rock formations seemed a world away from where we had just come from. After I dropped off Sam and Tif, I soon realized I was alone once again in the case of breaking down. It's a good thing I study satellite maps so hard, as the dirt road I camped down on night 3 was not only unmarked but it lead directly to the entrance of Charyn Canyon. After an hour of trying to get the car unstuck from the mud at Bartogay Lake, the maze of rough and steep roads had just begun. There were no signs marking these roads and if there were I wouldn't have been able to read them. I saw more yurts dotting the rolling green hills of the Tian Shan than cars passing me on the single land dirt track. It was certainly an adventure of a life time, and I must contribute a little bit of luck to the success of the journey. Being able to sleep under the stars on the Kazakh steppe knowing nomadic people are carrying out their every day lives in the very near distance was not experience I thought I would have in this country, but I am sure grateful that I did. Enjoy part 2 of my road trip through southern Kazakhstan and all of the highlights from my time in the country.
