Highlights from the Road Race Route as Kazakhstan's Alexandr Vinokurov wins gold in the men's road race event at the London 2012 Olympic Games (24 July 2012).
Columbia's Rigoberto Uran Uran won silver in the event with Norway's Kristoff Alexander winning the bronze medal.
Cycling is among the rare sports that have always featured on the Olympic programme. Road cycling, however, was not on the programme of the Paris 1900, St Louis 1904 or London 1908 Games, while track cycling wasn't in the programme of the Stockholm 1912 Games.
The first road event in Olympic history took place in 1896 on the marathon route at the first Games of the modern era in Athens. The race started in Athens, headed towards Marathon, then returned to Athens, at the Phaliron velodrome.
Olympic cycling was added to the women's programme in Los Angeles in 1984, with an individual road event.

There is just no way that that sprint from Uran is genuine. Uran stares in the wrong direction (away from Vino) for a long time, for no reason (there are no riders nearby behind anyway, so there is nothing for him to look at), then he moves far away from Vino, again for no reason, and then once Vino goes Uran ‘doesn’t notice' for a conveniently absurd length of time. If Uran has peripheral vision, he can see that Vino has attacked many seconds before he reacts (slowly). Frankly an embarrassment for both. Watch from 1.45 if you’re in any doubt.
