FIRST TIME WATCHING Joker and I can see why Joaquin Phoenix won the Oscar. Also the score for this film was absolutely beautiful. I hope they make a sequel to JOKER with the same team and continue this DC elseworld universe.

In the classic graphic novel, “The Killing Joke,” the Joker said, “If I’m going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice!” What makes this movie so brilliant is the strong possibility the entire story was Joker’s delusion.

That reaction was perfect, you never empathize more with Arthur than in that moment. Scared of him, sorry for him, and then watching this horrifying murder, but then when you see the little guy not reach the lock to escape, its like the punch line to a joke that you see coming a mile away but its so awful that when you laugh you cry because you feel like a bad person for laughing, its just the most a movie can make you feel with one 2 minute scene.

YES!! He perfectly conveyed terror and despair at the situation. And then the horror of realizing that he has to ask the "monster" in the room for help, so he put on that pretend voice like he was speaking to Arthur before what just happened in the friendly normal voice... but it is obviously forced and almost cracking. Such a brilliant scene. I also love that not only did he let him go, because he was always kind, but he also kissed him on the head to give some affection as an apology for the terror he just put him through.

I think the movie asked a serious question. How much punishment and abuse can an inoffensive person take before they kill? How long will someone be kicked until they would rather others be dead then let it happen to them again? I also consider it a warning. It is unwise to just mess with people you don't know on the street, anyone. It seems to me that many people today for whatever reason think it is alright to just get angry and assault people because they don't like what they say or stand for. You do that to the wrong person and you will not survive it. Because that person like Arthur either won't take it anymore or no longer cares about what will happen after.

Kazzy Reacts I gotta admit, I’m a suicide survivor, (decades ago) and was on 7 meds, living in a tiny converted hotel from the 1920’s that looks a lot like Arthur’s building. Things are good now, but I couldn’t help but identify to Arthur big time, and was in tears for at least 2-3 scenes of this flick. I’ve had nearly word for word exchanges with therapists and psychiatrists in the past. For me, it was more about ... watching mental illness consume, and eventually tear asunder poor Arthur Fleck, who just didn’t wanna feel so bad all the time. Going in i expected Joaquin to be nothing short of brilliant, but expected the insane tension to plateau when he “became the joker,” ...that we’d see that cool, composed chaos Heath L brilliantly pulled off. But nope.

There are many different ways to view this movie and everything that happens in the story. Since we are seeing everything through Arthur's POV - and he is delusional - nothing we see is a reliable source of information. We never know for certain, if Arthur's mother did in fact do these things to him. With someone as powerful as Thomas Wayne, any kind of documents, paperwork, etc, could have been forged in order to back up Wayne's story.

Kazzy: "This movie just doesn't let up. Does it get worse than this?" Todd Phillips: "Hold my beer..." Wow, Kazzy, that was a reaction and a half! I was sure you'd hate it after all your wriggling, crying and screaming but I'm glad you appreciated it. I think it's a masterpiece. I thought of the Beatles song "Eleanor Rigby" when I saw this: "All the lonely people, where do they all come from? All the lonely people, where do they all belong?" This is a movie about feeling disconnected from the world and it espouses compassion for the disenfranchised and marginalized of which there are legions. Arthur feels invisible. His only real contact is with his mother and that connection is ruptured harshly when he is exposed to possibly manufactured evidence of her own mental health issues and parental negligence. When his actions on the subway start getting media attention, he feels like he's leaving an imprint on the world. He actually does exist! His phantom girlfriend thinks the subway killer is heroic! People are wearing clown masks as a tribute! It's precisely the wrong kind of feedback for a delusional schizophrenic but the sensational media has to feed the beast of a jaundiced culture. In the watershed Alan Moore comic "The Killing Joke", Joker tests Jim Gordon's sanity by subjecting the Comissioner to the worst a parent can conceive -- irrevocable harm to their child -- theorizing that one horrible day is all it takes to plunge a sane man into madness. Joker paralyzes Barbara Gordon with a bullet to the spine to see if he can push the Commish over the edge. Well, this entire movie is Arthur's "terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day". When Arthur dances, it's a non-verbal expression of exultation. Throughout the film, he's hen-pecked, ridiculed and abused. When he exerts agency over his own fate by standing up for himself, he finds the sensation exhilarating! It's about power! He does it after the subway shootings, the stabbing and right before the fulfillment of his dream -- the talk show appearance that he has meticulously prepped for. The Dr. Sally (read Dr. Ruth Westheimer) character was featured in Frank Miller's seminal "The Dark Knight Returns" when Joker does make an appearance on a talk show and plants a sensuous kiss on her for laughs. That's lifted straight from the comics although Joker ends the segment by lethally poisoning everyone in the room including the studio audience! Phillips pays homage to several cinema classics: the bank of videoscreens juxtaposing murder and rioting with commercial banality is from Network, the marginalized, violent, alienated protagonist is from Taxi Driver, the phantom friend is from Fight Club, the untalented aspiring comic is from The King of Comedy which featured DeNiro as the stalker, and the class divisions and systemic dehumanization is from Modern Times featured in the movie itself! The movie makes multiple statements and is subject to multiple interpretations. That is the hallmark of great art. This is why the film generated so much discussion. It touched on several hot button political and social issues such as elitist disregard for the struggling common man, the apathy of bureaucracy, the importance of support systems for the mentally ill, the anger of the 99%, Bernie Goetz-like vigilantism, '70's Recession-era New York City, the elimination of many federal health programs and facilities when the Department of Health and Human Services had its budget slashed by 25% under Reagan in the '80's, the Occupy Movement with clown masks substituting Guy Fawkes masks, etc. I love how the film forces us to view the Wayne legacy from the villain's point of view. Preventing what happened to Thomas and Martha Wayne in that alley is the impetus of Bruce's entire adult life with his father looming large in his psyche. Arthur views Thomas instead as a callous, elitist, arrogant snob who quite possibly discredited his mother, abandoned him and "got what he deserved." A provocative shift in perspective. Despite this being a Joker origin story, the film keeps the Joker's origin mysterious. The character has provided various accounts of himself over his 80-year history. In "The Killing Joke", he says he prefers his origin to be multiple choice! Christopher Nolan played into that, too, with Heath Ledger telling different tales about his facial scars. The final twist of the film is that the entire narrative might simply be a grandiose delusion told to the lady shrink in the harsh fluorescent lighting of Arkham Asylum where Arthur is briefly seen banging his head against a door while straight-jacketed! Was that the REAL Joker at the end concocting a tragicomedy in his mind that no one gets but him or was the REAL Joker the one we saw Phoenix play throughout? Phillips leaves it for you to decide.

@oxhine Nice! This is a very well written post and covers many major valuable discussion points. I've only seen "Joker" once but I fully recognize this film is only enhanced when subject to multiple viewings and critiqued discussion. "Joker" is a true work of cinematic art whose impact could strengthen society if given opportunity for proper dialog in the right places and the public recognition it deserves.
@KazzyCreates
@KazzyCreates 3 жыл бұрын
@@dunringill1747 I agree. If given the opportunity and space for proper dialogue, this film could have a massive, sustainable impact on society here in the USA - and also all over the world. It could help shift the current narrative of what we, as humans, consider valuable and worthy in life. The discussion around not just access to adequate mental health care, but EFFECTIVE mental health services/care; shifting the stigma around how we view mental illness; the great disparity between destitution and affluence; the material things (and people) that we prop up and give a platform to, etc, etc, etc. While this film is visually difficult to watch at times, I feel that it is of the utmost importance for all adults in the world to see. It has such an important message. That's why it's difficult to watch, because it makes us look at ourselves (in my humble opinion). We have all contributed and played a part to a society that is cruel to Arthur. Some of us recognize this, so we consciously choose to NOT do that anymore. Others, however, are walking around totally blind and unconscious to the impact their decisions have on people, animals and the world around them. Every choice we make as an individual, has a ripple effect on the planet. Unfortunately, I have noticed, that we're mostly blind to this because we're very disconnected from each other - and from everything around us. Anyway, I digress. Sorry for the soapbox 😂. thats what that scene does... its like this horrified laugh that turns into a cry because you feel like an awful person for laughing at the little person, but the way the movie is shot, him reaching for the lock is like the punchline to this sick joke and the worst part of the horrifying murder is that you see it coming a mile away like a good dad joke. it makes people feel sick, and it was one of the biggest reasons people gave the movie bad reviews.

Props for managing to watch the whole film despite the dark tone and themes it addresses! For a lot of people this movie felt too real, which I can get behind for sure. For me personally it was so memorable and tragic beyond understanding. But relatable as well which makes it especially hard to watch at times. One of the line from Arthur's journal really summed it all up perfectly: "The worst part about having a mental illness is people expect you to behave as if you don't". Anyway it was a great movie imo! So my take on the plot was that the only part Arthur made up was his relationship with his neighbor. His mother possibly making up the story of him being Thomas Wayne's son. Though there is a theory that it could've been true considering Arthur smashes this old photo of his mom (still young) at the Wayne Estate and accidentally finds a hidden message on the back - a flirtatious comment towards his mother signed with Thomas' initials. What I also took to be real was his mother letting her boyfriend abuse her son. Indirectly being responsible for his head trauma/mental illness and being tied to a radiator to starve. Obviously I'm not condoning him killing his mom, but if Arthur believed that event to be real I could see where his moment of rage came from. Either way the movie gives off the impression that anything could be true or false. Nothing is a reliable source of information. As the one narrating the story is Arthur.
@KazzyCreates

EXACTLY. After giving this movie more thought, I realize that absolutely nothing is a reliable source of information in this film - because it is all coming from Arthur's POV. I have so much compassion for Arthur. I have personally experienced anxiety/panic attacks and depression at times throughout my own life. But this film doesn't just shine a light on mental illness, it illuminated so many unjust things that continue to happen in the world. The lack of mental health resources being one of these. And the disparity between the destitute and the affluent. It makes me very sad. IMHO, every single adult in the world needs to see this film. Thank you so much for watching my reaction and for writing such a wonderful comment 💛

Really? That's very interesting to me. Before I began this channel, I was under the impression that all "reactors" were genuine. Isn't that the whole point? I haven't watched a TON of reactors, so obviously I don't know for sure. There are a couple I really love (JayveeTV and The Reel Rejects). I don't watch anyone else besides those guys (If you can recommend any others, I'm all ears. I like to laugh and those two reactors give me some joy 😁). What you're saying piques my interest because I have had two people here in my comments accuse me of already seeing The Mandalorian. I couldn't understand why someone would accuse me of lying about whether or not I've watched a show before 😂. It made no sense to me. If I've seen something before, I will just say that. If I haven't seen it, I will say that. Sorry, I know this is a long message, lol. I'm just trying to figure out if there are more reactors on You Tube that are lying about these things then I realized - because why would people accuse me of this? I just started this channel a month ago, so I'm very new to this. Anyway, thank you for watching and commenting. And thank you for your kind words. It means a lot to me 😊✌🏼💛

i watched that movie with my brother (first weekend at the cinema) when i was in a dark place. that movie helped me... kinda as a warning to make things better right now. nobody at the cinema reacted like you to the door joke (him being too small to open it and asking a killer for help)... everyone was laughing while you were extremly down... that was weird because it was such an unexpected reaction. thx for uploading tho^^ much love from germany.

Thank you for watching my reaction 😊. I'm REALLY happy this film helped you. It made a difference for me as well. Did you watch my reaction all the way through? I felt so bad for Gary. The fact that he couldn't get out of Arthur's apartment, after just witnessing Arthur brutally murder someone....I honestly don't know how anyone could find that funny. I'm perplexed and saddened that that is called the "door joke" 😭. In that moment, my heart was with poor little Gary - because he wasn't one of the bad guys. I like knowing that no one else in the theater you were in, reacted the way I did. In my humble opinion, that just goes to show you how cruel the world can be. This movie gets an A+++ rating from me. However, I am really glad I didn't see it last year. I have personally experienced anxiety/panic attacks and depression throughout different times in my life. Perhaps that's one of the reasons why I love this movie so much. It hit me like a ton of bricks and tore my heart into tiny little pieces because I have so much compassion for Arthur and what the world has done to him. This film is so important and needs to be seen by every single adult on this planet. Thank you again for watching 💛

@@KazzyCreates You said "This film is so important and needs to be seen by every single adult on this planet." I very much agree. Especially now with all the hatred and violence happening around us. That would be especially impactful if we could all share our insights to each other and bond over it. There was another movie I had seen where I felt every political leader thinking about waging war should be forced to watch. This movie was also impactful yet covered disturbing and depressing subject matter - "Grave of the Fireflies".
@dunringill1747

I don't remember people laughing in the cinema but I do remember feeling the door scene was more of a metaphoric joke to Arthur. Arthur always saw himself as the little guy trapped with a violent society. He could not "open the door" either. All his life he had been accepting his fate of feeling trapped. Like Gary, he too needed help and compassion from the source of violence. Society never did "open the door" for Arthur, but at least Arthur could do that for Gary.

You must have a kind heart as you kept hoping for the best to happen to Arthur. 🤗 I loved how well this movie depicted the mental destruction of a man and how believable they made it. From the horrible society he lived in, his mental issues and medication, to his home life with his disturbed mother. His transformation into The Joker seemed completely believable. From seeing how hard he struggled to hold on to the last scrap of his sanity, only to have life continue beating him down till he breaks and finally accepts what he has become. Even though what he's become is a horrible murderer it seems to bring him some sort of strange peace.

This is an AMAZING movie. Phoenix played the role perfectly and deserves every bit of his award. This kind of movie sparks discussions and debates which means people think afterwards. I could go on and on about how people always see “the killer” on the news over and over and the gruesome things that they did, but here you get to see, what led up to this murder’s raise or fall, how we you choose to think about him. But yeah. It also made me hate the world, because people these days do like to hurt and spit on one other. I think it’s more a slap in the face to some parts of society on how they’ve become. But anyway I’m rambling. Good reaction. Glad you made it through the movie somewhat okay.
@KazzyCreates
@KazzyCreates 3 жыл бұрын
You're definitely NOT rambling 😃. I'm really grateful for your insightful comment...it means a lot to me. I completely agree with you - about what we see on the news and in media. We always see the horrible things. The click bait. Showing how someone (a killer) actually got to that place - where they became a "killer", is rarely shown to us, because then we might actually have compassion for that person....and oh we can't have that! (bad sarcasm) I have a hard time watching violence. ANY violence. So this was difficult for me to watch. BUT, I have so much compassion for Arthur on so many different levels. The world was NOT kind to him. He deserved better. MUCH better. How have we - as a human race - become so cruel to each other? This thought breaks my heart into tiny pieces. I cannot and will not subscribe to cruelty towards anyone. And I will never walk beside those that do. This movie illuminated so many unjust things that continue to happen in the world. The lack of mental health resources. Bullying. The disparity between the destitute and the affluent. People living below the poverty line in a first world nation - and nobody cares. The things and people that we prop up and give a platform to (materialistic values, how we view our self worth, etc). It makes me very sad. IMHO, every single adult needs to see this film. Thank you so much for watching my reaction and for writing such a wonderful comment 😊✌🏼💛 P.S. And you're right. This is an AMAZING movie. Phoenix did an outstanding job. Your reactions are priceless! Just one word for you sis: "Valium." And that moment, near the end of the film as Arthur is standing on the police car surrounded by his adoring fans: the moment when he wipes the blood from his mouth upwards into a smile is the moment that he 100% becomes Joker. Maybe the movie would have been more "rooting for joker" than "wtf did I just see" idk

Imagine this movie is directed by Martin Scorsese because this movie is inspired to taxi driver and the king of comedy

@@Karlebow571 Yes, I can see that it is definitely inspired by Taxi Driver. Joker is beautiful and heartbreaking.

Todd Philips hates comic book movies and he's been open about it. He wanted to make a modern day Taxi Driver / King of Comedy but he thought it wouldn't make any money because it's mostly big comic book movies that make huge money these days, so he thought that naming it after a comic book character while minimising as many comic book elements as possible was a way to exploit it (I read that he didn't even want the Wayne family to be in it). He wrongly anticipated that comic book fans would hate this movie, because he was unaware that comic books have "what if / elseworld" stories that are all about alternate takes like this, but he didn't mind because- like Scorsese- he doesn't think that comic book films are "real movies" anyway.

Kazzy Background on Joker, he was based on 1928's movie, "Man Who Laughs" with an actor named Conrad Veidt. Creators of Batman plus another man named, Jerry Robinson whose concept design of Joker of Veidt's distinctive smiling in Man Who Laughs. Google his famous photo of the smile inspired Joker. But during the restrictions of comic codes of 50's kept Joker's antics tame until 70's his antics gotten darker. Phoenix's portrayed of Joker reminds of Ledger's Joker as unhinged sociopath. Kane, Finger and Robinson's Joker was described as Psychopath in their 1940's Joker. Remembered new 2021's The Batman trailer, his main villain is Riddler. Another creation by Batman's creators is serial killer. I guess these creations were good verses bad in people's minds during the times of Great Depression.

While this was a very difficult film for me to watch, I am really glad I finally saw it. It's an A+++ film. However, I can't watch a lot of films like this over and over. When I watched the movie, Se7en, that really hit me as well. Again, excellent film, but difficult for me to watch. I probably will never watch it again. Thank you for watching and commenting.

well, i'm a much later sub than most of the peeps here, but i finally got around to watching and finishing this vid lol. i've always loved how empathetic, vocal and emotional you are in your reactions. seeing how tough you took some of the darker scenes in this reaction really got to me. When you cried upon realizing Gary couldn't open the door, it hit me with a wave of emotion. I haven't cried at a movie, since I watched Men In Black when I was 11, but seeing you break down made me tear up a bit in that moment. love your vids :)
