Thanks to an almost competitive-free environment, the Toyota Tacoma has dominated the midsize truck segment for nearly a decade. But the Tacoma now faces some stiff competition in the form of two new trucks from GM. So, does the third-generation Tacoma have what it takes to fend off segment newcomers?

I'm pretty sure this Tacoma will still be on the road 20 years from now without any issues. Can't say i'd trust the Colorado/Canyon with that longevity.

+Vester Lettucetoke that's why the Canyon and colorado have the 3rd and 4th highest resale value of 2016? right behind the Tacoma and 4 runner. reliability means nothing if you haven't changed the truck in 10 years
@sdlausen1
@sdlausen1 8 жыл бұрын
+snooplikesbacon New vehicles always hold their value when demand is high and first introduced. I guarantee you the same model year Tacoma will hold twice the value 8 years from now. Also, if Toyota hasn't changed the design of the Tacoma in 10 years and it's still the number selling mid size truck, what does that tell you?
@snooplikesbacon
@snooplikesbacon 8 жыл бұрын
+Soren Lausen that people had no other choice but to buy the Taco. if you do regular maintenance then reliability isn't an issue, there are no "unreliable" vehicles sold anymore except maybe the Germans. but hey if you like drum brakes. plastic beds and rusting frames then go for the Tacoma that gets worse fuel economy, less towing and slower. and they also look like the pigs from angry birds lol.
@snooplikesbacon
@snooplikesbacon 8 жыл бұрын
+Soren Lausen before the twins came out the only other option was a frontier. what would you pick? the Tacoma has nothing on the twins right now. but that's all you Toyota guys do is play the reliability line everytime but their vehicles are the most boring you can buy.

I had a 2010 double cab TRD Sport. This "new" Tacoma has the EXACT same cab with a "refresh". Look at it..they bolted on a new front and bed to the exact same cab...which is still made for someone 5'3. One thing...when I soled it I in 2015 I got 90% back what I paid for it...I private sold it and could not believe how much I got back. The resale is insane.

16 MPG is exactly what I got in my 2008 V6 4.0 Taco. Day in day out. Solid. You don't buy it for the mileage, you buy it because it is an unmatched pickup truck in it's segment, and off road capability bone stock even in the 2WD. Full size all time best PU in history: F150. Smaller undisputed all time best PU in history: Toyota Tacoma.

Why power adjustable seat is so important? Most, people, will adjusted and go. It's add price and unnecessary weight.
@1amino224
@1amino224 8 жыл бұрын
+symmetry08 It has nothing to do with being lazy. It's because manual seats provide far less adjustability. And it's pathetic that a $30,000+ truck doesn't even offer power seats.
@old2470
@old2470 8 жыл бұрын
+symmetry08 1. It is important to have it when you don't like the price the car you like someone wants to sell it to you. 2. It make drivers feel special - most cars are having just driver seat with power. 3. I would ask for power seat with memory - to not have to adjust whenever another driver drive my car before - not for power seat IF I would ask for one. Bottom line, a power seat is a nice addition for ego, but was never a deal breaker when PMW (price-make-wallet) were in sink.

For everyone mislead by this video, I've put 35k miles on my 2017 Tacoma trd off road. In reality expect to get about 20-24mpg average. Never seen less than 18mpg. You can hear how wound up the engine is in a few clips. If you're lighting up the tires, doing doughnuts in the sand, and driving with a lead foot expect 16mpg like these guys.
@richnichols9135
@richnichols9135 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, KBB are misleading on gas mileage. They quote 18 city/20 hwy for the Tacoma, it's 24 Hwy. They quote 25 mpg combined for the Colorado - it's actually 25 mpg Hwy, 20 mpg combined. They should at least present the correct facts. I have a 17 with 32k miles and also average 20-24 mpg, high on highway of 28.5 mpg.

I believe on the Colorado/Canyon you cannot get a trim level without the plastic air liner on the bottom, which is bad for offroad. I'd say if you want a great offroad midsize get the Tacoma with the V6, if you want a commute/towing midsize get the diesel GM twins.

The only thing I did not like was when pushing the clutch my toe was pushing about have way up the clutch pedal bar not on the pedal. I love how a rear facing car seat fits perfectly in the center back seat making it so you don't have to move the driver or passanger seats to fit.

Looks like a cool, sweet running truck and I see many of them on the road. Only thing that bugs me a bit is that even the regular Tacoma's sit a bit high. If I got one, I'd like to lower it back down to the level of the late 1990s Tacoma SR5, but then the catch would be that Toyota would void the factory warranty.

I’m 5 foot 10, I went to look at the Tacoma today. I managed to convince my self of the truck and the tight driver space. Then I wanted to check the room for anyone riding behind me and it was practically impossible for me to get in the back seat. So I adjusted the driver seat position, guess what, it was just impossible for me to hop onto the driver seat. I was hitting the roof line and the steering wheel and just could not get into the truck. It’s crazy how Toyota can get away with such designs. Other confusing features in the Tacoma were things like keyless entry only work on driver door. There is no arm rest for back passengers. There is no sunroof unless you go high end limited trim. Sales man kept arguing, the truck is purposely designed with inconsistent features to make it distinctive and special......and guess what the engine is a GDI, I bet no one new that. I love Toyota but they are always 15 years behind. Yes very reliable but boring to death. Other manufacturers have improved their reliability and if you are keeping your vehicle for say 7 years, who cares about reliability and paying a premium for a boring Toyota. Toyota designers need a wake up call.

+jet79637 i thought that way too, but for me, the Tacoma is a smaller more versatile truck. Smaller and more manuverable, and even a few MPG improvement for less trips to the gas station. For offroad purposes, It can hang with the Jeeps and FJ's out on the hard and more narrow trails that your full size wouldn't even fit through. All in all a better everyday truck.

+Goliath X the Colorado and canyon also have a stop sale issued right now for a possible fatal air bag recall. they're not allowed to sell anymore until the units affected are repaired properly for sale. and they're looking into ways to get current owners in asap to fix the issue. air bag won't deploy fast enough in a high speed collision so you would essentially face plant into the steering wheel and dash.

I drove one today (Texas edition crew cab 4wd auto transmission). Off the bat I felt like it had no power down low, not until roughly 4k rpm. The new v6 feels and sounds a little coarse at high rpm. The interior was vastly improved and the ride quality remained about the same. In comparison, the ancient Nissan Frontier V6 felt much stronger down low. Not sure why Toyota didn't offer rear disc brakes on it either.

My mpg experience is a little different. I got one a week ago, 2 wheel drive 6-cyl access cab, getting 22mpg 90% in town driving. Going very easy on the throttle, mostly. Also when buying it seemed - at least on the price tags on the trucks on the dealer lot - each major "upgrade" was about $3k (between the access and double cabs for example). I got the access vs. double because it really wasn't all that much more room because the double cab seats are much larger and I wanted the longer bed. The double cab seats were definitely more comfortable though! Note on the access cab you can't roll down the rear side windows.

Just be honest, the new 6-speed automatic transmission in the new Tacoma is possibly the worst transmission Toyota has ever put in a truck. I am glad that you guys gave a non-biased review and not a bunch of Taco fanboys gushing over the truck. The Tacoma interior is ugly and the engine still lacks power, if Toyota would incorporated some of the Toyota Hilux styling into the Tacoma then it would be #1 for sure. The Hilux is a good looking, comfortable truck. I would pay the extra price for 2.8L diesel Colorado and it has a more comfortable ride, nicer interior, loads of torque for towing, and excellent gas mileage.

He mentions that the steering "misaligns in both of our test vehicles." I think he may say this twice. If this means that mild off-road use knocks the steering out of whack and will require an alignment due to something bending is highly worrisome. Or does he simply mean that steering becomes loose and sloppy at higher speeds? Comment from KBB would be appreciated.

I've had two Tacomas and liked them both, mainly their reliability, but I now have a 2008 Nissan Frontier, I've had no problems, I'm 6 feet tall and have about 4 inches above my head, the seats have a soft velour like centers, and unlike Tacoma, you can have a beige interior which includes the dashboard and steering wheel. New Tacoma's are dark inside with a black dashboard except the little patch on the passenger side, and only on higher models. Also I have a real, FULL WIDTH FRONT BUMPER. In my 1997 Tacoma while off roading, the frame twisted and the bed dented the back of the cab. I love Toyota's but for the high prices of these trucks, their should be more no price increase variety in options like there were in the Nissan.

You can put down key-less start as another disadvantage. Worse than useless, it can cause your truck not to recognize your keyfob for a number of moronic reasons. Thus, leaving you stranded wherever you happen to be. Even if it's the middle of nowhere because you wanted to do some off-roading during your days off from work.
@ChandlerCharityTV
@ChandlerCharityTV 6 жыл бұрын
Same thing can happen with a Keyfob. That's why cars with passive entry AND cars with Keyless entry can both be stolen via a device that copies their transmission. Only the Keyfob does it when you press the button, and has a much smaller battery. HOWEVER, God help you when the push button start breaks, that's hella expensive.
@NGMonocrom
@NGMonocrom 6 жыл бұрын
You missed the main point. Yes, both types can be broken into. However, key-less start can leave you stranded for no reason at all. Back in 2007 in America, a show came out on one of the cable channels called "Speeders." Reality show about people getting pulled over for speeding. Ironically it was a bit entertaining. One episode had a young, obnoxious woman in a Nissan SUV. She was pulled over, and was quite rude to the officer. Once he ticketed her, she went to turn on her vehicle (Key-less, push button, start).... and literally nothing happened. She then became super nice and sweet towards the officer who was still there. Asked him to help her. He was having none of it. He told her to dial information for the nearest tow company, and then he left. No way in the world am I getting stranded because I push a button and my car decides "Nope! I don't feel like starting up for you." This is an issue that simply does not happen with a traditional car keyfob.
@ChandlerCharityTV
@ChandlerCharityTV 6 жыл бұрын
Hold up, I was a dumbass. I forgot the Push Button Start must recognize a separate transmitted code for it to start... My apologies, you're correct about it stranding you.

Nice Video but I don't like that the truck got 4 inches longer, no mention on that. Wish it had gotten smaller, I would pay a premium for a midsize size for a smaller truck. Hopefully the Ridgeline will be smaller, have AWD good clearance a decent box and a comparable suspension. 4 wheel steering is needed on the quad cabs.

Had a 2017 tacoma trd off road. It will barely get over 20mpg hwy real world. If your over 6ft you won’t be comfortable in this truck. Sitting positions are horrible. Back seats like always isn’t made for people. Those back seats are like a last resort. I moved on to a 2017 trd off road 4Runner. I avg the same gas mileage like almost identical on my daily runs. The 4Runner if it had the push to start/passive keyless would be perfect. The power delivery in the 4.0 is way better than the Tacoma’s new 3.5. I also thought the 4Runner transmission was smoother. I love the looks of the Tacoma but once I got to know it. It wasn’t the truck for me.

I see the truck in person and I don't like it. The new v6 run great with power but don't like how high the truck. I feel like the car smack from both bottom and top when I'm inside.

The SR 4 cylinder feels so slow and under powered, then if you want the V6 price goes over +30k easily, you seat low on the truck when driving even raising the seat ..i like the aggressive look but driving isn't what i have expected.

Meh, I have power seats in both my vehicles, but they're kinda pointless. It's a feature I literally used once to set my driving position, and it never got used again. The only time power seats are actually useful is if they're paired with a memory system, and you switch between multiple drivers. Otherwise, they're just a lot of unnecessary weight, complexity and cost.

I see the 3rd gen Tacoma as a mid cycle refresh besides the Tailgate and the bed light it didn't blow me away like it has to others...it's updated but not by the others standards I got a 2nd gen and chose it over buying a 3rd gen simply because the first models are always the guinie pigs and always sluggish as they work out it's bugs

James Wisrik who cares? People should cross shop for sure. Toyota barely did enough. enough to keep the fan boys like yourself jumpin at the bit and lining up like suckers to buy tech that is already five years old. I'm done with you now. You're a troll. +ebuff57 Drum brakes are used in the tacoma because it's frequently used for offroading, and having disk brakes, the brakes have the tendency to get dirty and clot up compared to drum brakes which remain closed and clean. I've test driven one, and it's braking was fantastic. Can't tell it's drum brakes in the back.
